PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: We are going to welcome a whole new month here with Andy Serwer. Happy November. October, not bad.
ANDY SERWER, "FORTUNE" MAGAZINE: October was great.
ZAHN: Compared to the action that preceded it.
SERWER: That's right, it was the best month for the stock market since January of '87, but of course I should mention that 30 months previous were all terrible. So you are going to bounce back a little bit.
However, the market is not behaving itself this morning. The Dow is down 75 points. Weakness, most of that having to do with unemployment. The unemployment number came out this morning. Unemployment rate for September at 5.7 percent. That's up slightly. That is for October, excuse me. In September, it was 5.6, so it's trending up slightly. Not a big surprise.
We did shed more jobs, however, so the picture continues to deteriorate, and then there is SEC chairman Harvey Pitt.
ZAHN: A lot of controversy surrounding him.
SERWER: Yes, Absolutely, and he is really under fire. There are investigations from the SEC itself, also from the General Accounting Office in Congress, and also from Senator Sarbanes as well, and the White House came out with a statement this morning saying...
(AUDIO GAP)
ZAHN: ... e-mail earlier this morning, and we usually get a very balanced representation of how people approach the issues. Today, he didn't get one person writing him, who was in favor of keeping Harvey Pitt around. That's quite unscientific, but pretty reflective of how angry people are about this.
SERWER: I want to follow-up quickly here, Paula, on a couple of stories we talked about earlier this week. Amazon.com opened up that clothing mall yesterday online that I talked about, and they had some glitches yesterday. They were selling bras in the men's department. This is a mistake. It's not a "bro." Do you remember the bro from the "Seinfeld" episode, the bra for men? This is just a mistake, a man bra?
ZAHN: Well, maybe some guy wants to save his wife time from shopping and he buys it for her. That is a distinct possibility, Andy.
SERWER: A mansere (ph) is another definition also.
Listen, I also was of course over at Dylan's candy store for Halloween, and I have some gifts for you from Dylan Lauren, Ralph Lauren's daughter who runs the store. This is the Wonder Woman Pez for Paula.
ZAHN: Can't live without that one, thank you.
SERWER: And for your co-anchors, Leon and Jack, the big hunk. I thin...
ZAHN: I thought it was great that Dylan said that this was the bar that accurately reflected who those two guys are, big hunks.
SERWER: Big hunks.
ZAHN: Thank you.
