BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Winona Ryder now is in the news today. The shoplifting case could be in the hands of the jury as early as today, but will the actress take the stand? Probably the one issue everyone's waiting to see on the West Coast.
In L.A., Rusty Dornin is covering that for us.

Hello, Rusty. Good morning.

RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Bill. It really is, will she or won't she? Her publicist says absolutely not; her attorney, Mark Geragos says, well, maybe. CNN talked to him over the weekend. He says he still hasn't made up his mind whether he will put the actress on the stand. He says she's been chomping at the bit to do it, but that he feels that he has planted a fair amount of reasonable doubt in the juror's minds.

Now on Friday, his star prosecution witness testified, Michael Shore , who was a former Saks employee. He talked about having a conversation, having a lunch and a telephone conversation with the Saks security chief, who claimed that he was out to get Miss Ryder, that he was going to bring her down. But on cross-examination, when Shore was asked whether he had an axe to grind, he claimed yes, he did, that he'd actually protested in front of Saks. He was planning a lawsuit on behalf of his wife. At that point, a few of the jurors even chuckled.

Then the other witnesses to testify were Lieutenant Gary Gilman (ph) of the Beverly Hills Police Department. This is all concerning the videotape, where they had claimed in a news conference that Miss Ryder was seen cutting off the tags, the sales tags, the security tags, on the clothing on the videotape. Apparently, that was not true, and Lieutenant Gary Gilman (ph) had to say that he had actually read that in a report by a Saks security employee.

Also, Sandy Gibbons from the L.A. district's attorney's office, also issuing a statement staying that that videotape did show her cutting off the security tags. She, too, had to admit that she did make an error.

Now the defense, if Miss Ryder does not take the stand, the defense is expected to rest today, so it could go to the jury, conceivably, late this afternoon, or possibly tomorrow.

Now, all during these proceedings, of course, she is mobbed as she comes in the courtroom, has not spoken at all to reporters. But apparently on Friday, she did give a couple of fans an autograph -- Bill.

HEMMER: I'm sure they liked that one. Thank you, Rusty. Rusty Dornin watching that in Southern California.
