CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The stars were out in Hollywood last night shining bright, but not for a glitzy movie premiere.
As Janine Sherrell (ph) reports, these Oscar winners came out for something much more important.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, you kids are tough.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, you've got to be tough.
JANINE SHERRELL (ph), CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): They're Hollywood's heavy hitters: Newman, Damon, Nicholson, Hanks, Roberts, Benning.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That's us.
SHERRELL (ph): One stage, one night, one reason: To raise money for a new Paul Newman camp for chronically and terminally-ill children. And if there is comfort in a crowd, it skipped this one.
TOM HANKS, ACTOR: Everybody is petrified.
MATT DAMON, ACTOR: We were all like knocking knees back there a little bit.
CHRIS O'DONNELL, ACTOR: And you could hear it in Jack's voice (UNINTELLIGIBLE), like Jack is nervous. This could be really -- this could be trouble.
SHERRELL (ph): Hemingway wrote the material. Lou Adler produced the all-star cast.
LOU ADLER, PRODUCER: Not one of them asked to read the script or how big their part was or what -- I mean, Warren Beatty had three lines. He was a conductor.
SHERRELL (ph): The real story takes place far from the lights of the theaters, 60 miles outside of Hollywood sits the future Painted Turtle.
They're making way for the only camp of its kind on the West Coast. At the helm is Lou Adler's wife, Page.
PAGE ADLER, CO-FOUNDER, THE PAINTED TURTLE: We plan on serving a thousand kids in the summer, and then during the year-round, 2,000 children and their family members. One of the biggest things that Paul Newman always says is that it's free of charge.
SHERRELL (ph): After volunteering at Newman's Connecticut site, Adler was hooked.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, hello.
SHERRELL (ph): She found the right spot and assembled a board, but still needed to reel in Newman.
P. ADLER: We fished, although he didn't catch a fish and I did, but you know, maybe we should cut that part. It's 179 acres, and there's a 23-acre natural lake with big, huge bass. I caught a 4- pounder myself.
SHERRELL (ph): The Painted Turtle will be the sixth Hole in the Wall Gang camp. It's been more than four years in the making, and though it sounds pretty ambitious, they plan to welcome their first campers in the fall of 2003.
P. ADLER: I will be there standing at that gate, walking (ph), and kissing and hugging every single one of them.
SHERRELL (ph): Janine Sherrell, CNN, Hollywood.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
COSTELLO: Thank you, Janine (ph).
