PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: More now on the two American soldiers who were seriously wounded in Kuwait this morning after being ambushed by unidentified gunmen.
Barbara Starr is joining us live from the Pentagon with the very latest -- good morning, Barbara.
What have you learned?
BARBARA STARR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Paula.
Well, Pentagon officials here are emphasizing that it's very, very early in this incident. They simply do not know who was responsible, whether it was an individual or someone or multiple assailants affiliated with some group.
What we do know, as CNN reported earlier this morning, two U.S. Army soldiers shot early today in Kuwait as they were traveling between Camp Doha, their headquarters, and another military base. One of the soldiers shot in the face, one in the shoulder, both in serious but stable condition at a Kuwaiti military hospital. The assailant, the soldiers were unable to return fire against the assailant. Where he is is simply unknown at this hour.
They say that these two soldiers are in stable condition and, in fact, we are told when they were shot they were able to drive themselves to the nearest base and then they were airlifted to that military hospital.
Now, according to reports, the two soldiers were on official business. They were possibly not in a military vehicle, but in a rented car, not a vehicle with any type of armor protection. We are also told they were dressed in civilian clothing at the time.
So it's a bit difficult for the military at the moment to sort out exactly what might have happened, how an assailant might have known that they were U.S. military personnel, whether an assailant even really did understand that they were military personnel.
This, of course, however, is the latest in a series of attacks against U.S. military personnel in Kuwait. Back in October, of course, there was a suicide attack against marines during an exercise, one marine killed, one injured. That was attributed to a group affiliated with al Qaeda. In this incident it's simply too soon to soon to say -- Paula.
ZAHN: All right, keep your eye on the story for us this morning, Barbara, and I'm sure we'll be coming back to you.
Thanks so much.
STARR: Thank you.
