JONATHAN KARL, CNN CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Laci Peterson was expected to deliver a son today. Her family and friends are asking personnel at emergency rooms and at birthing centers to watch for an expectant mother who has been missing since Christmas Eve. Though the search is continuing, hope is fading for her safe return.
Rusty Dornin is live in Modesto, California with the latest -- Rusty.
RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Jonathan, you only need to look at today's "Modesto Bee" to get a feeling of how this community feels about this date, February 10 was the delivery date. It was looked upon with great joy, of course, by Laci Peterson and her family and with great anticipation.
Now there is only a sense of dread in cases like this, in missing persons cases, any of these kinds of anniversaries and dates are very tough for the family to deal with.
Now, the family is trying to refocus their efforts to keep the search for Laci alive. Over the weekend, hundreds of volunteers fanned out along one of the canals here in the central valley that's used to deliver water to the farmers. They fanned out over fields and in woodland areas. The only things that were found were -- there was a woman's dress that was discovered by one of the volunteers. However, it has no connection to Laci Peterson.
Now, meantime, there will be a gathering of her close family and friends, about 20 people, apparently, tonight to commemorate the date. They will light candles and say prayers and recite a poem in Laci's honor.
Now, here at the Modesto Police Department, of course, the investigation is ongoing. There are no new clues or tips as of now. Apparently, they have received over 5,000 tips in this case, but so far, no sign of Laci Peterson -- Jonathan.
KARL: All right. Rusty Dornin in Modesto, thank you.
