PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: If you were with us in our last half hour, you heard that the Oscar nominations are in, and we wanted to share a small part of the program with you now, where the best supporting actresses nominations were made public. Let's listen.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... in a supporting role are -- Kathy Bates in "About Schmidt", Julianne Moore in "The Hours", Queen Latifah in "Chicago", Meryl Streep in "Adaptation", and Catherine Zeta-Jones in "Chicago" -- Marissa (ph).
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ZAHN: And we have Kathy Bates with us on the telephone now. Kathy, congratulations.
KATHY BATES, ACTOR: Thank you so much, Paula.
ZAHN: This comes on the heels of a Golden Globe nomination. How are you feeling going into this March extravaganza?
BATES: Very excited and looking forward to it. I think it is going to be a very interesting race.
ZAHN: This is not your first trip down Oscar lane here. You won a best actor (sic) award for "Misery" in 1990. You also got a nomination for best supporting actress for "Primary Colors" in 1998. You have got some tough competition this year with Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah. Have you seen any of their movies?
BATES: Absolutely. I've seen all of them, and it is very tough competition, and usually, traditionally, I think best supporting for both actors and actresses is a very tough field.
ZAHN: I have seen your movie, and I think you stole the show, which is a hard thing to say when Jack Nicholson is starring opposite you. For the folks who haven't seen about Schmidt yet, why don't you describe a little bit about what your role was?
BATES: Well, I play the mother of a young man who is marrying Jack's daughter, and we're a very different family from Jack. Jack's family is a very repressed insurance salesman from Nebraska, a Warren Schmidt, and we're very kind of free-flowing, kind of ex-hippie family out in Denver, so it's a real clash of cultures.
ZAHN: And a clash of cultures comes, of course, when you take to the hot tub nude, and try to encourage Jack Nicholson to go with you. Do you think it required courage to do that scene?
BATES: Yes, a bit courage, a bit of wonderful lighting, and the water was nice and warm, and we had a lot of fun.
ZAHN: Well, the whole show is very good. We wish you great luck, and know that you never want to feel too overconfident going into these things, so we know how you feel right now. And again, congratulations.
BATES: Thank you so much, Paula.
