BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Intense violence yet again in the Middle East. We talked about this yesterday. Overnight, Israeli forces conducted more raids in Gaza. This, a day after a suicide bombing in northern Israel in the city of Haifa killed 15 Israelis.
Back to Jerusalem yet again today.
Here's Mike Hanna tracking the bloodshed for us -- Mike, hello.
MIKE HANNA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Bill, in the early hours of the morning, Israeli forces once again entered Gaza. This time the Jabalya refugee camp in the north of that area. Eleven Palestinians were killed in this Israeli operation that Israel says was directed at members of the militant Hamas movement. Well over 100 Palestinians were wounded in the attack.
Now, among those killed, say Palestinians, eyewitnesses, eight people who the Palestinians say were unarmed bystanders who were struck by a tank shell while watching the civil defense units put out a fire. The Israeli Defense Force says it fired tank shells on three occasions. The third occasion, it says, it was directed at a group of people among whom was a man carrying an RPG rocket launcher.
This just the latest Israeli action in Gaza, which has been ongoing for weeks now and comes a day after a suicide bomb attack in the northern Israel city of Haifa, in which 15 Israelis were killed. This the first Palestinian attack in Israel in two month's time.
But Israel insisting that the Gaza operation not in response to the attack in Haifa, saying that it's part of its ongoing operations aimed at preventing such attacks.
Palestinians contend that these Israeli military operations serve only to fuel and encourage attacks on Israeli civilians by Palestinians -- Bill.
HEMMER: Mike Hanna reporting in Jerusalem.
