BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Clearly to our viewers at home, the headline again today is what is happening inside of Baghdad.
Lisa Rose Weaver is embedded with the military. She joins us by telephone.

I think you're pretty close to the capital city, Lisa; not quite sure exactly. What's happening there?

LISA ROSE WEAVER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, Bill, well, we are about -- I am about 10 kilometers away from Baghdad, just outside the international airport. I am embedded with an air defense Patriot defense unit, which has just set up. And I can hear to the north of us heavy artillery fighting in Baghdad. It's nothing that I can see exactly, but there is a fairly constant barrage of very heavy booming.

Earlier, we explored some Republican National Guard bunkers that were apparently abandoned very much at the last minute, lots of ammunition, abandoned clothes, notably one of the captains conducting this search discovering baby formula there. He says he suspects that the Iraqi soldiers were eating it for vitamins, because all else they had to eat appears to have been bread and potatoes.

Other than that, it's been a smooth journey to this point. Nothing going on in the immediate vicinity, but again, we hear that artillery in Baghdad -- Bill.

HEMMER: Lisa, we got a report about three hours ago from Walt Rodgers. At that time, it was described as an incoming missile hit, some sort of operation center run by the 3rd Infantry Division. I know you're with this air defense unit here. Do you know as to whether or not -- or can you even tell us whether or not Patriot missiles have gone with you to this location in the event that incoming missiles would be fired at U.S. forces?

WEAVER: Well, yes, that is the function of having a Patriot battery at this location. So far -- we've only been here a few hours -- there hasn't been need to utilize them, but that indeed is why they're here.

There is -- you mentioned the 3rd Infantry. There is a lot of infantry in the area. We passed many tanks and other military vehicles on the way up. But again, where I am is outside the airport, not inside, and I can't really see what's going on there on the other side of the wall -- Bill.

HEMMER: All right, Lisa, thanks -- Lisa Rose Weaver embedded there just outside of Baghdad, and we will check in when we get more.
