BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: A number of developments yet again. Over past 12 hours now, Renay San Miguel takes us back.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): 1:20 a.m.: Abu Dhabi TV reports a firefight in central Baghdad between a U.S. armored unit and Iraqi forces. It started as coalition forces tried to take a bridge close to a high rise building used by Iraq's prime minister.

2:24 a.m.: The Al-Jazeera network reports its reporter, Tariq Ayoub, has died after being injured this morning when a U.S. airstrike hit a building housing Arab media.

2:42 a.m.: CNN's Martin Savage, traveling with the 7th Marines, reports they have entered the southeastern edge of Baghdad, and are blowing up abandoned Iraqi vehicles and weapons that they find as they move forward.

3:58 a.m.: Four Arab networks report loud explosions around the Palestine Hotel, where many international journalists are staying. There are reports at least five journalists are injured. The Pentagon says sniper fire was coming from the hotel.

6:24 a.m.: U.S. President George W. Bush says he does not know whether Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is still alive after a U.S. airstrike yesterday. A B-1 bomber dropped four 2,000 bombs on a building in a residential area of Baghdad, after getting intelligence reports senior officials were meeting there, possibly including Saddam Hussein and his sons.

Speaking at news conference in northern Ireland, Mr. Bush said even if the Iraqi president survived the bombing -- quote -- "He will be gone."
