BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: For more on the job search, Andy Serwer is minding everybody's business today.
ANDY SERWER, "FORTUNE" MAGAZINE: Good morning to you guys.
HEMMER: How are you?
SERWER: I'm fine.
Interesting hearing about Michael Cohn saying that it's taken him a year so far to look for a job. Unfortunately, that's not so atypical these days.
HEMMER: Yes.
SERWER: The job search period now up to 4.2 months on average. That's a 17-year high.
What can you do about this kind of situation? Let's get some job tips up and check it out.
First of all, it's very important -- some of these may seem obvious, but it's interesting how few of these people do sometimes. Speak up. Let people know that you're out of work. That's sort of networking, I guess, in a sense.
Branch out. And interestingly, again going back to what Michael was saying, he was looking for an IT job in financial services. Well, maybe he should start to look out and look at other types of companies. I mean, if you worked in pharmaceuticals, you know, why can't you work in another business?
Let's look at, don't burn your bridges. I mean, this one, you know, when you get laid off, I'm going to tell my boss exactly what I think of him. Really dumb. I mean, that's...
HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Never a good idea.
SERWER: It's a small world, Heidi, as we all -- I mean, how many times have you seen someone turn up at an old job that you knew from previous stuff?
And then lastly, be your own boss. This is very important. Bill Hemmer, Inc., Heidi Collins, Inc., very important...
COLLINS: Sure.
(CROSSTALK)
SERWER: ... you're running your own careers. But, you know, this kind of stuff, consider home office stuff, working out of your home, franchising, you know, that can be very typical.
Consulting is very important, though, because what it can do is bridge you from your old job to your next job, especially if you're out for a period of like a year.
COLLINS: And then you have a distraction, you know...
(CROSSTALK)
SERWER: Yes, you're going to work, you're doing stuff, exactly.
COLLINS: Absolutely, all right.
HEMMER: Thank you, Andy.
SERWER: OK.
COLLINS: Andy Serwer, thanks so much.
