LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Now, to Iraq. U.S. force there's have come under attack today, and at least one American has been killed. The fighting was in Fallujah, which is just west of Baghdad.
Our Matthew Chance is live in the capital, Baghdad. He checks in now live with an update -- Matthew.

MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thanks very much, Leon.

And just few updated facts that have come down to us officials. They are now referring to that fight in the town of Fallujah, about 70 kilometers, 50 miles or so, to the west of Baghdad, saying that now they can update their figures, casualty figures, to two U.S. soldiers that have been killed as a result of the fighting-seven injured, we're told, when a group of gunmen of unknown size, unknown number, attacked the U.S. patrol in the center of that town, apparently at some kind of road intersection. U.S. forces saying the fighting, the firing rather, was coming from a mosque in center of the city. They say they returned fire, killing at least two of the attackers, and taking another six into custody.

It's also been confirmed by the U.S. authorities that a U.S. Army helicopter that was being used to medevac the injured away from the scene has also been damaged there. We're told that it wasn't by hostile fire, though, but instead by U.S. Bradley Fighting Vehicle which we understand now seemed to strike it as it was maneuvering to get into a firing position. We understand it sort of hit the tailgate of that aircraft and caused it quite severe damage. So a real picture of confusion emerging from that town of Fallujah, which has long been a flashpoint for anti-U.S. violence.

But clearly enough, it's illustrating how dangerous it still is for U.S. troops out there on the ground -- Leon.

HARRIS: Thank you very, Matthew. Matthew Chance reporting live for us from Baghdad.
