DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Another military convoy has been attacked near the Iraqi town of Fallujah. Details are just coming out on this.
Our Matthew Chance is in Baghdad with the latest.
Matthew, hello.
MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thank you very much, Daryn.
That's right, more violence underlying just how difficult it is and dangerous it is for U.S. forces patrolling streets of towns and cities across Iraq. The latest incident comes to us from the road north of Fallujah, from U.S. officials there, saying that one of their U.S. Army convoys was fired upon by unidentified attackers, two rocket-propelled grenades fired at them.
In response, U.S. forces say they've detained at least five Iraqis on that road north of Fallujah, the town to the west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, which has been a repeated flashpoint with opponents of the U.S. presence here in Iraq, repeatedly attacking their patrols.
That coming as news also comes to us from U.S. officials that the net is tightening closer on the top officials of the former regime of Saddam Hussein. Another two of those top figures have been brought in to U.S. custody. The exact circumstances of the captures have not been revealed to us, but the names of those captured has. One of those in custody is Lotaf Mussayaf Yasef Al Galami (ph), a Baath Party official and deputy chairman of the party's military bureau. He's also described as being involved in suicide operations, and security for Iraq's defense facilities. He is the 10 of clubs in the Pentagon's deck of cards of most wanted Iraqis and is listed as number 18 on their most wanted list.
The other captured Iraqi was listed as number 53. He is Brigadier General Kai Husseini Al Awadi (ph), a Baath Party regional commander and a brigadier general in Iraq's chemical corps. He's been linked to the regime's brutal suppression of Shiite Muslims and Kurds, religious and ethnic minorities across the country.
So the noose tightening around the top figures in the regime. But still, the very top figures, of course, Saddam Hussein and his two sons still very much at large.
Back to you, Daryn.
KAGAN: Matthew Chance live from Baghdad. Matthew, thank you.
