BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: More on the violence right now again in Baghdad. A U.S. soldier killed earlier today, another wounded after a drive-by attack took place there.
Jane Arraf now gas more on the afternoon of violence again in the Iraqi capital.

Jane, hello.

JANE ARRAF, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Bill.

The tension appears to be rising with the heat here in Baghdad. This latest incident at a propane station. Now, it's where Iraqis go and line up for hours sometimes to get cooking fuel, and it's guarded by American soldiers.

Now, this afternoon around noon, in fact, one soldier was killed and another one wounded. We talked to witnesses on the scene, and one described to us what happened.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): The soldier had a quarrel with a woman. He pushed her and threw her propane tank aside. A passerby in a car saw what happened and didn't like it. He got out of the car along with two more men. They parked their car away, or came back on foot, I really don't know. Anyway, one of them walked up to the soldier and shot him before running away. He shot him at a close range.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ARRAF: Now, they closed off that area. There are helicopters circling. There were forces looking for these attackers. And across town, just outside the palace that was now occupied by the American coalition authorities, two Iraqis were shot dead. This in a demonstration of former Army officers and former soldiers. Now their jobs have disappeared and they've come four times to the palace, they say, to get the money that they say they were owed. The coalition promised to give them back wages. They haven't had any money yet.

Apparently, what happened yet, is one of the armed vehicles, the armored vehicle with the U.S. soldiers on it, was pushed and stones thrown at it by some of these protesters. A guard on that vehicle opened fire, killing two people, possibly wounding another. Now, this has enraged people there, and certainly hasn't added to the atmosphere here in the city -- Bill. HEMMER: Jane Arraf in Baghdad, thanks for that.
