Healthy Tips for a Holiday BBQ

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: We want to take you back to the holiday weekend now for just a moment. In fact, food, as I'm sure you know, is a main ingredient for making the most of your Fourth of July weekend.
Sanjay is off this morning, so we have medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen at the CNN Center now with some more healthy tips for a holiday barbie.
You're outside there on the -- what is that, the hard news deck cafe?
ELIZABETH COHEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right, the hard news deck. I've got the City of Atlanta behind me. It is a beautiful Fourth of July. Happy Fourth of July to you, Heidi.
And we're going to talk about Fourth of July food. And I have happy news. And the happy news is that the Fourth of July fare is actually, in many ways, a lot healthier than, say, Christmas or Thanksgiving. There are no heavy sauces. There's really pretty much just simple food.
Let's go through the calorie count of some of the foods that many of us eat on the Fourth of July. Let's take a look at some of the meats first.
Your hamburger with a bun, 409 calories. A hot dog, 290. So if you want to cut some calories, you could choose the hot dog instead. That piece of chicken is about 205 calories. And the chips here are, let's see, 150 calories. So that sort of gives you an idea for the main plate.
Now, the salads I found sort of were surprisingly high in calories, at least the potato salad, 330 calories. So, in other words, this potato salad has more calories than the chicken or the hot dog. The cole slaw is 170 calories.
Now if you're interested in dessert, one of these little cute little mini cupcakes, 120 calories, and a piece of watermelon is 51 calories.
So a hint here, you'll notice we also have some sodas, is that if you're interested in cutting down on the caloric content of your Fourth of July meals, you could drink water instead of juice or soda. Each of these bottles, each bottle is about 250 calories. In other words, one bottle is about the equivalent calorie wise as three of the little cupcakes. So one thing that you might want to do is watch what you're drinking.
Now, if you're drinking alcohol, which we don't have here, that'll even make it worse. Then you're really going to up your calorie content.
So those are some thoughts for the Fourth of July. Drink water instead of other kinds of drinks. That'll save you. And don't worry so much. This holiday the foods are actually lower in calories than many other holidays.... Heidi.
COLLINS: Wow, I can't believe there's that many calories in that poor little Coke or other beverages that are not named so.
COHEN: And you drink it so it -- right, and you drink it so quickly, I mean unlike a food, which often, you know, you'll chew and you'll eat it over time, I mean sometimes you get -- especially if it's hot, you'll just swig those calories down. You won't even realize how many calories you're taking in.
COLLINS: What a waste. I'm going to go for the hot dogs instead next time.
