SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go right now to the latest violence in Iraq. Two U.S. soldiers were killed in separate attacks on military officials, and they are confirming that today.
CNN's Baghdad bureau chief Jane Arraf is live in the capital for us this morning.
Jane -- good morning to you.
JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Soledad.
One of those soldiers was shot and killed in Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad, overnight. That was the first attack. The second, another American soldier from the 4th Infantry Division killed when a rocket- propelled grenade was fired at a U.S. convoy, another soldier wounded in that incident.
There were other attacks as well in Baghdad and other places. One of them, according to witnesses, rocket-propelled grenades fired at an Iraqi police station, backed by U.S. soldiers, in the troubled town of Fallujah.
Now, part of the solution to this, according to U.S. officials, is to start the new Iraqi army and get the Iraqi police force out there on the streets. They are doing training of Iraqi police. The first recruits of retraining are starting -- will be graduating next week, and officials have announced that they will start recruiting Iraqi army soldiers. They expect to graduate 1,000 of those next month -- Soledad.
O'BRIEN: All right, Jane Arraf for us in Baghdad. Jane, thank you for that.
