SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Now we go to Matt Mosley of "The Dallas Morning News." He's been covering the Dennehy story. He is in Dallas this morning.
Good morning to you, Matt. Thanks for joining us.
MATT MOSLEY, "DALLAS MORNING NEWS" REPORTER: Good morning.
O'BRIEN: Give me a sense, any surprise with the latest developments in this case?
MOSLEY: I think at this point, in this bizarre case, there's been so many twists that I don't know if we can be surprised. It does seem things that keep happening every day, it just gets more and more bizarre. And it seems like the Carlton Dotson, the last two times he's talked to authorities, he's talked to authorities, he's gone to them on his own without an attorney present, and I think that's been one of the most bizarre twists of the past few days.
O'BRIEN: Your paper is reporting that police say Carlton Dotson confessed to killing Patrick Dennehy. Carlton Dotson, when he came out and faced cameras, told journalists he did not confess. Tell me a little bit and give me more details and fill in, I guess, the confusion for us about this confession?
MOSLEY: Well, I think Carlton Dotson. It's been interesting, because as we've reported that on Sunday evening, he checked himself in for a mental evaluation at a hospital in Maryland, and then again, on Monday, apparently, he called the FBI from the hospital and said, come get me, I want to talk.
So it's hard to figure out what all is going to right now, but as far as his comment last night, some reporter as he walked out probably shouted a question at him, and that was the only thing he said back, but authorities are telling us that he did confess.
O'BRIEN: It's unusual to see someone in a high profile case as this has now become walking without their attorney. His attorney's been kept, it seems, very much out of the loop.
MOSLEY: Yes, It's just strange. This is a high-powered attorney, Grady Irvin, that had some acclaim for representing top athletes, and the -- in the past week, it seems like Carlton Dotson in one of his attorney's statements said, well, he hasn't slept in three or four days, but he also said, I don't know -- at that time, he said, I don't know what Carlton Dotson is saying to the authorities that the point. So it seemed like Carlton Dotson has operated on his own in the past few days, and last night, whatever he told FBI agents and authorities there in Maryland was enough to issue an arrest warrant.
O'BRIEN: Draw for us a picture, if you can, of this young man, Carlton Dotson. He was described as the best friend of Patrick Dennehy. Are you getting any information from the interviews that you've done about what potentially went wrong?
MOSLEY: You know, we hear little bits and pieces, and it's hard to make too much of it. As you try to put this puzzle together, yes, these guys, they've been called by friends inseparable. On the team, from what we've been able to gather, they came in both the same year. Dennehy sat out this past year. Dotson did play. And so as far as fitting in with the rest of the team, the stories we've been told that they were a little bit isolated from the rest of the team, that they weren't as close friends with the rest of the team, and that when we talked to these property owners in Waco, in the weeks leading up to Patrick Dennehy's disappearance, and I guess the months leading up to it, they had purchased guns and were going out shooting guns together. And again, we don't know what to make of all that, except that they were together all of the time.
O'BRIEN: Matt Mosley is a reporter with "The Dallas Morning News." Thanks for your time, Matt. Appreciate it.
MOSLEY: Thank you.
