SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, ANCHOR: Authorities in Texas confirmed last night that a body found near Waco last week is that of Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy. Dennehy disappeared on June 12.
Carlton Dotson, who played basketball at Baylor last season, is charged with murder in Dennehy's death.

CNN's Mike Brooks joins us from Waco with the latest.

Mike, good morning.

MIKE BROOKS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Soledad.

Late last night Sheriff Larry Lynch of the McClellan County sheriff's office here in Waco called a brief news conference to talk about a body that was found late Friday evening in a gravel pit four miles southeast of the Baylor University campus.

SHERIFF LARRY LYNCH, MCCLELLAN COUNTY, TEXAS: The sheriff's office was advised by the lab in Dallas that a positive identification had been made on the body that we sent to him on Saturday morning. I'm sad to report it's the body of Patrick Dennehy.

BROOKS: Now, yesterday, investigators found additional evidence at the scene that helped them make that identification. A source tells CNN that that additional evidence was, in fact, the head -- very gruesome and not easy to talk about, Soledad, but it was the head of Patrick Dennehy.

Now we have not gotten the autopsy results back with a cause of death or any other information from the forensics lab in Dallas.

Meanwhile, in Kent County, Maryland, his former teammate and friend, Carlton Dotson, sits in a jail cell, accused of his murder. His next hearing is August 19, in Kent County. He is fighting extradition back to Texas -- Soledad.

O'BRIEN: CNN's Mike Brooks. Thanks, Mike, for that report.
