SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's turn now to Iraq. In an effort to improve security there, the Bush administration may introduce a resolution to the Security Council of the United Nations, calling for greater international involvement. Secretary of State Colin Powell will meet with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan this morning to discuss the resolution.
CNN's Michael Okwu joins us now live from U.N. headquarters.
Michael -- good morning.
MICHAEL OKWU, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Soledad.
The two men are expected to meet this morning at U.N. headquarters within the next two hours or so. We're understand from U.N. diplomats that this is a meeting that the secretary himself had called for with Annan. Very high on the agenda, the resolution that would authorize the deployment of a multinational police and security force in Iraq.
In the past weeks, countries, like India France, Germany and Russia, have been very reluctant to send additional troops into Iraq without any Security Council authorization. And the issue here really is one of control. Many of those countries opposed the war, and they do not -- do not want to have any of those troops under U.S. command.
Now, the British foreign secretary, Jack Straw, is also scheduled to meet with the secretary-general, Kofi Annan, this afternoon. All along, he has been pushing for a greater U.N. mandate -- Soledad.
O'BRIEN: All right, Michael Okwu, thanks for that.
