SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go back to Gaza, where Israeli helicopters fired missiles this morning. Matthew Chance joins us now via videophone from Gaza City with more.
Matthew, good morning. First, tell us the latest that you know from here.
MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, there's some confusion, as you may expect, surrounding the number of people who have been killed in this latest Israeli helicopter gunship strike on a car as it drove through the very busy streets of this extremely densely populated Gaza City. We're having -- we've got confirmed from the Shipper (ph) Hospital, which is the main hospital here in Gaza City, that one person has been killed. But other reports, eyewitnesses at the scene, say as many as three people have been killed as a result of the attack.
What we do understand from the hospital official we've been speaking to is that as many as 25 others have been injured as a result of this attack against a car as it drove through those busy streets. Some of them, according to medical officials, have been injured and they're in extremely critical state. So obviously, the final death toll could move considerably on this.
We understand from Palestinian officials that the people inside the car, that was driving through those streets were members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. We know that the one person who has been confirmed as dead was a member of that Palestinian militant group, bringing to at least 11 the number of militants that have been killed in precisely the same way by Israeli helicopter gunships over the course of the past two weeks or so.
Angry crowds now panicked have gathered around the area where the strike took place. Many people in the streets, as well as the militant groups, calling for the armed factions here to take their revenge on the people of Israel -- Soledad.
O'BRIEN: All right. CNN's Matthew Chance joining us by videophone this morning. Matthew, thanks for that update. And we will continue to check in with you throughout the morning to get the latest details from there.
