SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Turning now to an update on magician Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy, who was severely mauled by a tiger during a performance on Friday in Las Vegas. Family and friends have been sitting vigil outside the hospital showing their support for Horn, who still remains in critical condition.
Miguel Marquez has the latest for us from Las Vegas this morning.

Miguel -- good morning.

MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Soledad.

It is critical condition, but there is a little ray of hope that we're hearing as well. Guarded optimism are the words that people close to Roy are now using to describe his condition -- optimism that he will at some point make some sort of a recovery from this. They say that mainly because Roy Horn is communicating in some way, though they're not saying exactly how he is communicating.

The Associated Press reporting that he is on a ventilator, so presumably he is not speaking to them, but there may be some sort of physical sensation that they're getting from him. They do say that he is cognizant of his surroundings and know what's going on.

That candlelight vigil you talked about occurred at this hospital, the University Medical Center, in Las Vegas last night. Over 200 employees, actors and others who participate in their show showed up here to show their support, even though over the weekend they essentially got their pink slips. The management at the MGM Mirage telling them they should probably seek other career options.

As you know, Roy was attacked on Friday night by one of those famed white tigers, Montecore, a 7-year-old tiger that he works with. It was during their show, about 45 minutes into it, and it left him very badly injured, after biting him in the neck.

That 7-year-old cat, I can tell you, it will be quarantined for 10 days, says the MGM Mirage. There is no investigation into this from the Department of Wildlife here in Nevada, but the MGM Mirage does say that the Department of Wildlife has asked for information about that cat -- Soledad.

O'BRIEN: Oh, it's a terrible story. Miguel Marquez reporting for us this morning from Las Vegas. And, of course, we hope for the very best for him as well from here.
