SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Over at the Gray Davis campaign, Charles Feldman is there live for us in Los Angeles -- Charles, how's the mood there?
CHARLES FELDMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning, Soledad.

Well, the mood among the Gray Davis people publicly, cautiously optimistic, privately very concerned. The governor spending yesterday, his last day of campaigning, and also trying to convince people that, remember, this is a two part election, of course, the recall and then if the recall goes through, to select one of 135 candidates to replace him.

So his task was to convince voters that the contest basically boils down to one between Governor Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GOV. GRAY DAVIS (D), CALIFORNIA: Now all the polls suggest that Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to win the replacement election. So the voters have one choice to make and it's crystal clear -- either elect Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor or vote no on the recall and allow me to finish the term they elected me to.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Did you underestimate him?

DAVIS: No, I never underestimate an actor who is a celebrity. This is California. I mean celebrities are a big deal here. They come into a race with instant advantages. But I think voters are rethinking their choice, and that's why you see the race closing.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FELDMAN: Now, Governor Davis is always proud of saying that he's won five elections statewide in a row and that the people always underestimate him. Later today we'll find out, or at least by tonight, perhaps, whether or not his luck will hold through -- Soledad.

O'BRIEN: No question about that.

All right, Charles Feldman for us in Los Angeles this morning, as well.

Thanks so much.

And we're going to have complete coverage of the recall results tomorrow morning.

Bill Hemmer will be live in Los Angeles. I'll be here. We'll do a split show on AMERICAN MORNING, and that begins tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. on the East Coast.
