SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's turn to a story of a soldier who was now -- sorry, let's turn to a story of the angry reaction in Baghdad to the deaths of two Iraqis. What you're looking at there is about 10,000 Shiite Muslims gathered to protest fighting between Iraqis and U.S. troops. Two Americans were killed. The military says they were ambushed. Demonstrators say that the soldiers provoked the confrontation.
Harris Whitbeck is live for us in Baghdad with the latest on this story this morning. Harris, good morning.

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Soledad.

Those soldiers belonged to the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division. They were on a routine patrol last night in Sadr City, when according to the military, they responded to a humanitarian call for help. They went into the sector where the call came from and they were ambushed. Two soldiers died, and also at least two Iraqi combatants died as well.

The pictures you were referring to, Soledad, were actually the funeral for one of those combatants. That occurred this morning in Sadr City.

CNN Baghdad cameraman Basa Muhi (ph) was there. He said that he saw hundreds of these mourners carrying weapons, but he was not allowed to videotape those weapons.

Most of the mourners, and there were really lots of them out there, chanted "There is no God except Allah, and they kept saying that America is the enemy of God." So a lot of anger on the streets of Sadr City today, which is also the scene of a car bomb explosion that left eight Iraqi policemen dead yesterday -- Soledad.

O'BRIEN: Harris Whitbeck, thanks for that update.
