BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: A U.S. soldier killed earlier today, two others wounded outside of Baghdad. It happened a little more than an hour ago.
Harris Whitbeck tracking the latest from Baghdad.

Harris, what do you know this hour? Good afternoon there.

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Bill, good afternoon.

Coalition military spokesmen confirming that one military policeman and two others were wounded after an improvised explosive device went off. We understand that the -- those involved were from the 220th Military Police Brigade, and this is just the latest in a string of incidents affecting U.S. soldiers and involving improvised explosive devices -- Bill.

HEMMER: You describe it as a series of incidents. All morning long, we've been talking about this fierce gun fighting in Karbala. What happened there?

WHITBECK: That's right. That gunfight lasted around twelve hours. We're now being told the situation is under control, but still a lot of tension in that city. In that incident, a joint military police patrol made up of U.S. military police, and members of the Iraqi police force were patrolling downtown Karbala when they looked into reports that a group of men had -- of armed men had congregated near a mosque after curfew, and when they went to check that out they were engaged and there was a fierce gun battle, and again, there were three U.S. military police and two Iraqi policemen who died during that incident. Seven others were wounded. Five of those wounded American military police -- Bill.

O'BRIEN: As you point out already, a very violent day throughout that country on this Friday. Harris Whitbeck in Iraq, reporting on these two separate incidents so far today.
