ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Retailers who have been dreaming of a green Christmas with visions of dollar signs dancing in their heads may have reason to be merry this morning. The Thanksgiving weekend kicked off the holiday season in a very big way.
Christine Romans is here with details.
Good morning.
CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS: Good morning.
You know, some retailers made 40 percent of their holiday boon on that one day of the year, and it was pretty good overall...
COOPER: And they made 40 percent on that one day?
ROMANS: On that one day. It's a very big day. It is not the biggest shopping day of the year, mind you. That is the Saturday before Christmas. But this is the big one that sort of kicks off the holiday shopping season, and you get a lot of people out there.
This year, it was DVDs, toys, a lot of electronic devices. This is what people were buying. And the analysts say it wasn't so bad after all.
Wal-Mart had record one-day sales, $1.52 billion. You guys, that works out to about $5 for every man, woman and child in America spent in one day at Wal-Mart.
This is what Visa says: Personal entertainment goods up 20 percent, home and garden supplies up 12 percent, discount stores up 9 percent almost, department stores up 7.4 percent in terms of what people spent.
So, up for the day about 12 percent over the same period last year for some folks. Overall, maybe about a 4.5 to 5 percent gain. We'll see if that holds out for the rest of the holiday season.
Last year, you had a huge boon, a gain the day after Thanksgiving. But then for the whole season, sales were only up about 2 percent.
COOPER: (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: It wasn't able to save it, then, the holiday season?
ROMANS: No. So, we'll see if that happens this year. But so far, so good.
