CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We’re finding out a little more about an explosion in Iraq. It was one of those improvised roadside bombs that was detonated just as a passenger bus and then a U.S. convoy passed over it. One American is dead.
Let's go live to Baghdad for more and Walter Rodgers.

Hello -- Walter.

WALTER RODGERS, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

Well, the bomb was aimed at killing Americans, as a U.S. military convoy passed by a section of southeastern Baghdad, but coincidentally, and unfortunately for the 21 Iraqis aboard a bus, a civilian bus was passing by at the same time. The roadside bomb detonated by the third Humvee in the convoy, the last Humvee there. One American soldier was killed. And, again, the Iraqis are now saying at least three of their own were killed.

Walid Abdul Sateh (ph) was there.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): I heard the large explosion on the main street. I saw American Hummers. One was hit and the other pulled up a little further. Two injured soldiers got out of the vehicle, and the American driver was dead and slumped over the steering wheel.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

RODGERS: The carnage was particularly bloody aboard the bus, 21 Iraqis aboard that bus. The police say three of them were killed. The driver's body was seen lying close to the scene. He had a canvass tarpaulin pulled over him.

Iraqi eyewitnesses, however, say at least six Iraqi civilians were killed. At least a dozen other Iraqis were taken to a hospital. As we said, one American soldier, the driver, was killed, two other Americans injured. They're being treated at this time.

Not a very auspicious event for the beginning of Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld's visit to Iraq. That was supposed to happen today. We expect it will go ahead with even tighter security -- Carol.

COSTELLO: We expect so. Walter Rodgers reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
