SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: In Hollywood this morning they announced the nominees for the 61st Golden Globe Awards, honoring the year's best in film and television. Many of the nominees were pretty easy to predict in advance, including "The Lord of the Rings," "Tom Cruise," Diane Keaton." But as always there were some surprises, like James Berwin and Brigitte Davis for the controversial TV movie "The Reagans." The Golden Globes will be handed out on Sunday, January 25th, so let's bring together our own little panel here to talk about the nominations.
Humorist Andy Borowitz joins us, B.J. Sigesmund is a staff editor of "US Weekly," he's here, too, and Jeffrey Toobin, who's seen a ton of movies.

JEFFREY TOOBIN, CNN LEGAL ANALYST: A ton, but my beat is justice. And I want to know, is where is the justice in "Gigli" not being nominated.

O'BRIEN: Get in line, buddy.

ANDY BOROWITZ, "THE NEW YORKER": Right, and "Yes, Dear" was shut out.

O'BRIEN: Shocking. Yet again, shocked.

Let's start with you, B.J. Who would say was the big winner in the nomination category?

B.J. SIGESMUND, "US WEEKLY": Definitely "Lost in Translation." Sophia Coppola got nominated for both writing the screenplay and for directing this movie, which has only made $30 million so far. Bill Murray got an Oscar nomination. Everyone's been waiting for that for months and months.

TOOBIN: You're jumping the gun, he got a Golden Globe.

SIGESMUND: Oh, thank you. I'm sorry, Golden Globe nomination. Oscar is next. Oscar is in January. And then Scarlett Johansson not only got nominated for this movie, but also got a nomination for "Girl with the Pearl Earring," and this girl is only 19 years old. It's really an incredible morning for her.

TOOBIN: She should quit now probably.

O'BRIEN: Right, get those little statues, and then just stop altogether. Who would you pick as sort of your big winner?

BOROWITZ: I would think this movie "The Cooler," mainly because no one's heard of it except for the Hollywood Press Association.

O'BRIEN: William H. Macy.

BOROWITZ: And they gave -- you heard of it. They gave, I guess, two supporting actor nods to that movie, which is going to raise awareness for that. I think it's great.

But I think that a little film like this, what they do with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Is they generally ply them with food to get them to go see these screenings, and then it pays off sometimes for something like that.

SIGESMUND: One thing I was pleased about was "Cold Mountain," which is a beautiful, beautiful movie.

O'BRIEN: Is it out yet?

SIGESMUND: It's coming out Christmas Day. All three actors in it got nominations this morning, Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Renee Zellweger. And interestingly, this movie, even though everyone's talking about "Lord of the Rings" for best picture, there were no acting nominations for that film today. So you could see that "Cold Mountain" actually be the Oscar performance movie, and "Lord of the Rings" end up being the Oscar winner. I know we're jumping back and forth between the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

O'BRIEN: He's so into the Oscars. That's a different interview.

SIGESMUND: I know. I know. But the Golden Globes are very much a precursor to the Oscars.

O'BRIEN: Jeff was talking earlier about Sophia Coppola. If she is to win, that would be an interesting sort of history with her father.

TOOBIN: Has the daughter of any Golden Globe or Oscar Winner ever won any award?

SIGESMND: Well, first of all, there have been so few women ever nominated for a directing award. I think she's one of now three women in history who -- or I don't know about Golden Globes again, sorry, keep confusing with Oscars. But she may be the first female ever to be nominated for a Golden Globe for directing a film.

O'BRIEN: Let's talk about TV shows that were nominated, or maybe in some cases not, because I thought, you know, usually you see "Friends" running up and down. Not a big...

SIGESMUND: Yes, the only nomination for "Friends" was Matt Le Blanc.

BOROWITZ: Again, sort of in that "Cooler" category, everybody's favorite program "Nip/Tuck" got a bunch of nominations.

O'BRIEN: Right, and many people haven't heard of that.

BOROWITZ: Yes, so I guess, you know, it's kind of a positive thing.

TOOBIN: Can I be the legal dummy and say what is "Nip/Tuck?" I don't even know what it is.

O'BRIEN: It's about plastic surgery.

TOOBIN: Is it on a network?

SIGESMUND: It's on F/X.

And don't forget about "Arrested Development, which is the show that Fox has stood behind all these months.

O'BRIEN: "Six Feet Under" did well again.

SIGESMUND: "Six Feet Under," right.

And "The Office," which is a British show. They haven't even created the American version of it yet, and the British version is getting Golden Globe nominations.

O'BRIEN: It will be interested to see. I guess the ceremony itself is on January 25th. You said it's a great ceremony, because they feed you, they ply you with drinks.

BOROWITZ: I've been there. You get drunk. I remember briefly heckling Olivia De Havilland at one of those events. It's really good. I would recommend it. I know, It wasn't a high point for me.

O'BRIEN: Really? No. We'll go with you this year, Andy. We're happy to go. Thanks you guys. Appreciate it.
