SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: All right, girls. If your list of New Year's resolutions this year includes finding Mr. Right, listen up. There's a new book out there. It's called "Mr. Right: Right Now." And as it's subtitle suggests, it promises to show how a smart woman can land her dream man in just six weeks. The author is E. Jean Carroll. She's an advice columnist for "Elle" magazine. Hey, how are you? Happy new year.
E. JEAN CARROLL, AUTHOR: Thank you, Soledad.

O'BRIEN: So how is your book different from say, "The rules?" I read that book.

(CROSSTALK)

O'BRIEN: What's different about your book.

CARROLL: First of all, "The Rules" was just written for dumb women. This book is written for smart women. Dumb women have enough self-help books written for them. Also this has been tested for ten years.

O'BRIEN: Scientifically tested by all your readers?

CARROLL: There's millions of reads who read the "Ask E. Jean" column in "Elle."

O'BRIEN: In a nutshell, what's the advice? Sum it up for us.

CARROLL: It's only going to take a woman, guaranteed, foolproof, six weeks to catch a man. And I'll tell you why.

No. 1, Mother Nature has designed every single woman to find and seduce a man. If we don't, then she doesn't get her next generation.

The second reason it's going to work is when a man meets a woman he decides almost everything about her in the first 30 seconds. And by the way, Soledad, if a man finds a woman attractive -- right, Bill? -- he will find her interesting and intelligent.

The third reason is when a man and woman meet and they like one another, mother nature is a very, very big fan of love at first sight. So she makes sure they click. And clicking means that you synchronize.

O'BRIEN: So do you think that happens? I mean lots of people get together and they say, well, we didn't get along at first but over time, then we realized we loved each other, we got married -- whatever. Do you think people click immediately, like you know or do you think clicking is something that can happen over time?

CARROLL: Clicking -- it depends -- let's take Al Pacino in "The Godfather." Remember when he saw Apolonia on the Sicilian hillside? Boom, she stumbled, he ran to the village to ask her father for her hand in marriage.

O'BRIEN: There are lots of people who say, that's not how I met my spouse or my boyfriend.

CARROLL: You know what? When you meet each other you don't have to have that exhilarating, I love him, love him, love him feeling. You can just like each other.

(CROSSTALK)

CARROLL: Mother Nature wants you to like each other. Then you have a foundation on which to build something that is long lasting.

O'BRIEN: So if you're dating someone and you're not clicking, ditch him? Oh, good question. She stopped. I have stumped the columnist for a moment.

CARROLL: No, no. If you're dating somebody and you're not crazy about him why are you wasting your time?

O'BRIEN: No, I'm saying you're not clicking. You don't have that ah!

CARROLL: If you don't that excitement about seeing him and you're planning what you're going to wear and you can't wait to see him the next time and you're having a great time when you're with him...

O'BRIEN: Ditch him. Why six weeks? What's magical about the six week number?

CARROLL: Because the first week you have to get your attitude right. The second week you get your look together. The third week you get rid of your fears, right? The fourth week you learn how to torture men.

O'BRIEN: Really? Let's focus on that chapter for just a moment. What does that mean?

CARROLL: Because the goal of flirting is love. And the very essence of love is uncertainty. Right? So you learn how to thrash them...

O'BRIEN: The essence of love is uncertainty?

CARROLL: Oh, yes. Don't you love a guy that you can't -- I know you're happily married. I know you're happily married. But when you...

O'BRIEN: Maybe at first. But is that the foundation of a real relationship?

(CROSSTALK)

CARROLL: Yes. You know what? When a man is uncertain, he wants that woman.

O'BRIEN: What's your success rate, would you say?

CARROLL: Well, it's not my success rate. It's Mother Nature's success rate. We have 2 billion years of testing this. She has worked very, very hard. And I tell you the success rate is very high because look at the world population.

O'BRIEN: You've got a list of 79 ways to lose a man right at the very end. Give me some highlights of that list, 9 worst of, essentially.

CARROLL: Worst of. Ask a man where you stand.

O'BRIEN: In your relationship? I hate that.

CARROLL: Next one. Ask a man where you stand as a couple.

O'BRIEN: Yes, also bad. OK, what else?

CARROLL: We should have Bill come over here and talk.

(LAUGHTER)

CARROLL: Let me see.

O'BRIEN: You also say don't wear -- do you own a pair of baggy maroon sweat pants, which, yes, I do.

CARROLL: Wear them every night. That's always good.

O'BRIEN: I have been doing that. No, I'm kidding.

CARROLL: The fastest way to lose a man -- and I hate to keep talking about women losing and gaining men because men gain and lose women, too. But the fastest way is to really care about everything he thinks about you.

O'BRIEN: Be your own, strong, independent self and the rest will follow.

CARROLL: That is right, Soledad! That is it.

(CROSSTALK)

(LAUGHTER)

O'BRIEN: Let me know if you need me to go on the book tour with you. It's nice to have you.

CARROLL: Thanks, Soledad. O'BRIEN: Always nice to see you.
