BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: The CIA is studying an audio tape that's said to be the voice of Osama bin Laden. The speaker on that tape refers to the capture of Saddam Hussein and other recent events. But is it proof that bin Laden is still alive?
Mike Boettcher has more on this, this morning.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
MIKE BOETTCHER, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The latest audio tape begins with an uncharacteristic introduction.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): Osama, son of Mohammad bin Laden, to his brothers and sisters.
BOETTCHER: The tape, which is being studied for authenticity by U.S. intelligence, is fairly recent. The tape refers in an oblique way to the capture of Saddam Hussein three weeks ago.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): Especially after they saw the capture of their ex-comrade in betrayal and treason and puppetry to America.
BOETTCHER: The message? That the Muslim people had to resist a U.S. conspiracy to take their land, and he pointed to the occupation of Iraq as a first step.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): Today it's Baghdad and tomorrow it's Riyadh.
BOETTCHER: The speaker urged Muslims to wage a jihad against the U.S. and Israel.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): There is no dialogue with those except with weapons. Jihad is the only active, effective force.
BOETTCHER: The voice on the tape also called on Muslims, especially those in Gulf states, to overthrow their own leaders for collaborating with the United States.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE (through translator): It is now imperative that those governments have to be brought down -- those who support the infidels and shed the blood of their brothers and sisters.
PETER BERGEN, CNN TERROR ANALYST: Well, this is part of a pattern of his. He's always putting on notice people who are kind of cooperative in the war in terrorism or Middle Eastern governments that are allies of the United States.
BOETTCHER: Intelligence sources say bin Laden remains somewhere along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The hunt for him is now in its third year.
Mike Boettcher, CNN, New Orleans.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
HEMMER: According to U.S. officials, the last time the tape aired with a voice that was probably bin Laden's was back on the 18th of October.
