SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: All week long, we have profiled our "New You Resolution" participants. Today, we're going to meet Pam and Michael Kirkbride. They're a young couple, dealing with a new infant amid the chaos of New York City.
BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: And as many parents find out, time becomes scarce, along with the energy and the sleep, of course.
DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT: And Pam and Michael, they stood out to us because of their commitment to meet their New You Resolution together. So here is team Kirkbride.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
GUPTA (voice-over): Meet Pam and Michael Kirkbride. Almost six months ago, the birth of Olivia changed everything.
PAM KIRKBRIDE, NEW YOU PARTICIPANT: It's not about you anymore. It's about the baby and it's about Olivia's well-being.
MICHAEL KIRKBRIDE, NEW YOU PARTICIPANT: I think the hardest thing of new parenting, I'm sure this is true anywhere, is sleep.
P. KIRKBRIDE: Yes. Yes.
M. KIRKBRIDE: It's just so hard finding time to sleep.
GUPTA: Simply finding time is a challenge for these New York City 30-somethings. Michael, in addition to being a new father, works two consulting jobs and is getting his MBA.
M. KIRKBRIDE: Between work -- I'm running a start-up basically -- and school, which takes a lot of time no matter what, it's hard to find time to do anything.
GUPTA: Pam recently returned to work in marketing at Liz Claiborne.
P. KIRKBRIDE: I'm pretty much on the go, and I hide the fact that I'm tired all the time.
GUPTA: The Kirkbrides grew up together. Married for three and a half years, they were an active couple -- the gym together, sports on the weekends -- until now.
When the schedules crunched, the first thing to go was exercise, and the next thing to come was weight. Over the past year, Pam and Michael gained more than 40 pounds together.
M. KIRKBRIDE: I was sitting at a meeting with a guy that I've worked for, for about five or six years, and he looked at me in the middle of the meeting and was, like, "Michael, you're getting fat." I was like, 'What?'
GUPTA: Motherhood brings new changes, including an increased ring size and dress size.
P. KIRKBRIDE: Nothing fit. I mean, I have about 20-25 pairs of pants that I can't wear.
GUPTA: While finding time for exercise was a stretch, Pam and Michael soon discovered eating right took time as well.
P. KIRKBRIDE: PB&J is huge thing in this house, because that's instant dinner.
M. KIRKBRIDE: And I'm aware of what healthy food is. I just don't really always have time to eat it.
GUPTA: Eating and exercise are problems we can all relate to, but the Kirkbrides have also just moved.
P. KIRKBRIDE: Usually you have a pattern in the morning, and, as you can tell, we don't have one yet. I mean, I sometimes change my clothes in the hallway.
GUPTA: While achieving their New You Resolution might be hard, Pam, Michael and Olivia still find time to do one thing.
M. KIRKBRIDE: We do a lot of smiling, and this belly is growing.
P. KIRKBRIDE: It's really growing. It is. I mentioned it last night.
M. KIRKBRIDE: That's sweet.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
GUPTA: And we are joined by team Kirkbrides, Pam and Michael. Thanks for joining us.
Real quick -- and I know Soledad has tons of advice for you as part of your New You Resolution -- but how much time do you have at any given time? How many blocks of time during the day do you have to get things done?
P. KIRKBRIDE: Not much. I mean, I think spurts of 15 or 20 minutes.
GUPTA: And that's to cook.
P. KIRKBRIDE: To cook, to clean, yes.
GUPTA: To get healthy and exercise. P. KIRKBRIDE: And then, Olivia, you know, in between.
O'BRIEN: Are you willing to get a baby sitter, so that the two of you can go to the gym together? Because that was a really hard thing for me to sort of let someone come in, hire someone for 90 minutes so I could go to the gym. It took me, literally, years to do that.
P. KIRKBRIDE: Well, it took us several months to find somebody here in New York, but we finally found somebody, and we trust her, and she's starting on Saturday.
O'BRIEN: Oh, you see.
M. KIRKBRIDE: And we're going to go to the gym.
O'BRIEN: I think that's a huge thing. And that will bring a lot of stuff together.
P. KIRKBRIDE: Yes, yes.
HEMMER: Do you describe your relationship as cooperative or competitive?
M. KIRKBRIDE: I would go with cooperative. I mean, we definitely push each other along, but it's cooperative. We're a team.
HEMMER: I would think that it's going absolutely key to help one another through this.
M. KIRKBRIDE: Yes.
P. KIRKBRIDE: If he comes home at 9:30, 10:00 at night from school, he's going to do his workout. I am going to make him do it.
M. KIRKBRIDE: No uncertain terms.
O'BRIEN: I think that's very cool that he's gained weight with you, as you gained weight in the pregnancy, and now you're trying to lose it together.
GUPTA: He gained more than she did.
Well, we want to thank you for making the commitment. It's a big commitment. We know that time-wise and everything. So, Pam and Michael, here is your New You Prescription.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
P. KIRKBRIDE: I mean, we were active people before her, and we just want to get back to that lifestyle again.
GUPTA (voice-over): Pam and Michael, we've got your New You plan to get you back where you want to be.
First your biggest problem area. M. KIRKBRIDE: Time, the hardest thing is to find the time.
GUPTA: Organizing your new apartment and schedules will help you get at least 10 minutes a day to reflect and to plan ahead. Finding time will help you to find the gym again. We'll bring in a fitness expert to burn off that baby bulge. A regular exercise routine will give you more energy for work, school and parenting.
M. KIRKBRIDE: They're going to help you find time to go to the gym and eat well? Bring it on.
GUPTA: A parenting and nutrition expert will teach you the quickest and healthiest ways to shop for food and to eat on the go.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
And we are looking forward to watching you meet your goals over the next eight weeks. A lot of people are already writing in, following along with e-mails. So, we hope to keep them abreast of your progress.
And now that we've introduced all of you at home as well to our participants, we'd like to invite you to join in with your very own New You Resolutions. CNN's team of experts have designed all of their plans, if you'll notice, in a way so that that you too at home can fulfill your resolutions. You're not going to need trainers or fancy nutritionists to follow along. This is something we encourage you to do at home.
For more details, go to cnn.com/resolution, and tune in every Tuesday right here on AMERICAN MORNING. We're going to update you on all of our participants' successes and their shortfalls as well for the next seven weeks.
Also catch this Sunday "WEEKEND HOUSE CALL" at 8:30 Eastern. I'm going to be answering some of the hundreds of e-mails we have been receiving about the New You Resolution and the New Your series.
Thanks a lot.
O'BRIEN: Good luck, you guys.
HEMMER: Yes.
O'BRIEN: See you next week.
HEMMER: Off and running in a lot of ways.
