BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Record low temperatures were recorded over the weekend in several cities, including Boston, which hit 3 degrees below zero on Saturday -- chilly there, we know that. Yesterday, the nation's lowest recorded temperature: minus 28 in Whitefield, New Hampshire. The lowest wind chill yesterday: 36 below in Frenchville, Maine.
More now on the freezing temperatures outside with CNN's Kris Osborn.

KRIS OSBORN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: These well-formed ice crystals in New Hampshire tell the story of a wintry weekend, as single-digit temperatures chilled the Northeast. But the subzero wind chill did not stop these Newcastle, New Hampshire swimmers from jumping into near-freezing ocean water. Seemingly undaunted by the cold, the swimmers splashed their way in for the Polar Bear Plunge.

A little further south in Boston, folks bundled up near Quincy Market. And Saturday, freezing Foxborough fans braved the elements to cheer the Patriots to victory. Some found expressive ways to cope with the temperatures, hovering around zero. During the game, the wind chill made fans and players alike feel as low as low as minus 10.

The Sunday morning sun rose over the Big Apple, but its bright glow seemingly did little to warm the air. Cold air treated New Yorkers to 8-degree weather.

And it wasn’t much warmer in Philadelphia, where Eagle's fans gathered around this burning trash can, preparing for their playoff match-up with the Packers.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There's no wind right now. I think we're ready for this morning. We've got a nice fire. The key is I have my electric socks on. At any given time, I'll throw the batteries in when it gets too cold. We'll be OK all day.

OSBORN: The 7-degree temperatures at Veterans Stadium, however, did not dampen fans' wild enthusiasm for the game.

Meteorologists say the bursts of cold air are flowing south from Canada, and forecasters believe more is expected in the coming week.

Kris Osborn, CNN, Atlanta.
