SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: It is week two of the "New You Resolution" series. It's part of our eight-week series in which we're going to help some regular folks who want to make some big changes in their health in 2004.
BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Yes, we certainly do. And last week, we met everybody. We brought them all in here.
Today, it's time to find out how they're doing now that they're back home. And Dr. Sanjay Gupta takes us through now, live from the CNN Center.
Sanjay -- good morning.
DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Bill.
Yes, and every Tuesday we're going to update you on their successes and their shortcomings.
Here is this week's "New You" checkup.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
KATHERINE BURKHOLDER, NEW YOU RESOLUTION PARTICIPANT: I'm doing pretty good. I'm not freaked out completely. I was really bad the first three days, and now I'm a lot better.
GUPTA (voice-over): Katherine credits her Zyban prescription for easing her anxiety. Now, she's gone 13 days without a cigarette. That's the longest she's ever stayed smoke-free.
She's talked to her counselor almost every day, but decided not add in the nicotine patch or gum -- wanting to get over the addiction as fast as possible. And she stopped drinking to avoid empty calories and weight gain.
And Katherine is exercising every day to help keep her mind off smoking.
BURKHOLDER: I think you get better every time you try to quit.
GUPTA: Kim had a lot of firsts in week one. She learned how to box, rock climb and practice yoga.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Kim, you were the star of that one.
GUPTA: She's definitely following her trainer's first fitness must.
KIM EVERETT, NEW YOU RESOLUTION PARTICIPANT: I think it's just a variety of things. I don't feel like I really worked out.
GUPTA: As of Saturday, she did a total of four workouts, three cardio just as the trainer ordered, but she hasn't lost any weight yet and says better selection at meal time is not a piece of cake.
David's first commitment is to de-stress, and he did that by taking a yoga class.
DAVID PECK, NEW YOU RESOLUTION PARTICIPANT: I was thinking you just sit there and hum, but there is a lot to yoga.
GUPTA: He's also changing his eating habits -- fewer carbs and opting for things like fish, veggies and scrubbing the snacks. The main reason he's trying to drop his level of stress, his diagnosis of arterial blockages weighing on his mind. An angiogram will this week will find out how many and how extensive those blockages are.
PECK: I'm concerned. You look at everything a little different before surgery, and I look at the family and hold things a little tighter and make sure you play with the kids a little more.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
GUPTA: David's angiogram is going to be tomorrow, and CNN is going to be there. We'll certainly give you an in-depth update next week.
Now, let's focus on our young New York City parents, the Kirkbrides. Their first week has been pretty hectic. Have they found time to be healthy despite their already busy schedules? We found out.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
GUPTA (on camera): She looks like Tom Cruise in "Mission Impossible."
(voice-over): In the first week of their "New You Resolution," Pam and Michael Kirkbride found some new ways to work out with some new friends. But have the new parents found time to exercise without their "New You" teammates?
MICHAEL KIRKBRIDE, NEW YOU RESOLUTION PARTICIPANT: It's hard to work this stuff into the day.
GUPTA: Fitness educator Stacy Lee Crause (ph) put them on a fitness plan, including cardio at least three times a week for 30 minutes to burn off those extra pounds.
PAM KIRKBRIDE, NEW YOU RESOLUTION PARTICIPANT: Oh, my god.
GUPTA: In week one, they're doing it.
P. KIRKBRIDE: It's like if I was here by myself I would have lowered that puppy in, like, five minutes.
GUPTA: Michael even made it to an indoor cycling class. The Kirkbrides are also focusing on their problem areas, core muscles, your midsection.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I call them lifestyle integration exercises, and basically what they are is just exercises that you can do anytime during the day.
GUPTA: Including pushups, crunches, wall-sits and a position called the plank.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Although we're practicing them here, you can do some very simple exercises in your home.
GUPTA: All can be done while taking care of Olivia in 20 minutes or less a day.
M. KIRKBRIDE: We're active much more than we were a week ago.
GUPTA: "Parenting" magazine's Lisa Bain (ph) showed them better choices at the grocery store.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Any time that you can find healthy food that's already cut and prepared and in snack form, grab it.
GUPTA: Overall, the Kirkbrides are sticking to it. So far, so good.
P. KIRKBRIDE: And we thought last week there is no way we'll be able to do this. You can carve out time.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
GUPTA: And we are really whipping the Kirkbrides into shape. We want to make sure that you at home as well are following along with the "New You Resolution." So, here are some simple take-home tips that we're going to provide to you every week.
First of al, drinking water is good for you. But how much should you drink? Well, divide your weight in pounds by two and drink that number in ounces. That should keep you feeling full and refreshed.
If you're trying to lose weight, get your heart pumping through exercises like jogging, biking or swimming -- weight lifting not necessarily. And even if you only have minutes to exercise, you can build your strength and tone through some simple stretches and exercises. Gym classes are the best way to get a free trainer. Ask them for advice on goals and performance after the class.
Also, make your life easier. Buy pre-cut, pre-made and pre- washed items, such as vegetables and fruit. Sometimes they may cost a little bit more, but you'll be more likely to eat them.
Finally, add flavor this new year, not fat. Good spices and fresh herbs taste great and are lower in calories. For more, log on to cnn.com/resolution. You can follow along with our participants. You can read their daily journals, and certainly send them notes of encouragement. Thousands of them have already been coming in.
Make sure and join us Tuesday -- next Tuesday at 7:00 Eastern for another weekly checkup. It will be right here on AMERICAN MORNING. Still to come.
Back to you -- Bill.
O'BRIEN: All right, Sanjay, thanks a lot.
