From Surf to Slopes

SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: The teenage surfer who lost her left arm in a shark attack last November is not letting anything keep her down. Now, Bethany Hamilton is tackling a new challenge: snowboarding.
Wendy Brockman of W -- KWGN, rather, in Denver reports on Bethany's debut on the slopes.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

WENDY BROCKMAN, KWGN REPORTER (voice-over): She's an inspiration. This is Bethany Hamilton in competition earlier this month in Hawaii, just two months after a shark attack. She placed in the top five in her age group. Now, she's surfing the slopes in Steamboat Springs.

BETHANY HAMILTON, LOST ARM TO SHARK: The first day we got lessons down on the bunny hills.

BROCKMAN: Soon after, she's boarding blue slopes with ease.

When officials at Steamboat heard Hamilton was interested in trying snowboarding, they arranged to fly her whole family out for a four-day vacation Colorado-style.

B. HAMILTON: Our instructor said we learned quite fast since we, like, surfed and we had, like, the balance and stuff.

BROCKMAN: Her mom says she's adapting the new challenges with ease. For example, she's now playing the keyboard instead of the guitar.

CHERI HAMILTON, BETHANY'S MOM: Well, we're just setting new goals and a new focus, and it's going to be good.

BROCKMAN: Hamilton credits God for her positive (AUDIO GAP) give up her goal to be a pro surfer to snowboard instead?

B. HAMILTON: Well, it's cool doing this, but I miss the water.

O'BRIEN: Well, on their way home to Hawaii, Bethany's family will stop in California to pick up the teenager's new prosthetic arm.
