BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: It has been an especially violent day in Iraq. Two U.S. soldiers have been killed, four others wounded in one attack. Another deadly attack on an Iraqi police outpost. Three Iraqi women were killed there.
Michael Holmes live in Baghdad with more on all of this -- Michael, good afternoon.

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi to you, Bill.

Good afternoon.

Yes, a couple of violent incidents to report to you. The first one cost the lives of two members of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division. It happened at 6:30 p.m. last evening local time. There was a forward operating base at a place called Ba'qubah -- that's about an hour and a half, two hours north of us here in Baghdad -- that came under mortar and rocket attack. One of those mortars landed pretty much in the middle of that forward operating base, killing those two soldiers. Another one critically wounded.

Now, we're told that members of the 4th I.D. identified where the attack had come from and they returned fire with artillery shells and mortars. No word on any casualties among those doing the attacking, however.

The other one I want to tell you about, Bill, is a very sad one. Three Iraqi women who work for the coalition were killed as they and other women were going to work at a U.S. base. They worked, some were cleaners, some were working in the laundry, a bus load of nine women basically heading to work. And a car pulled up alongside, opened fire with automatic weapons. And at the end of it, three of those women were killed. A couple of others were wounded, showing, underscoring, I suppose, the dangers of just working for the coalition, as well, in Iraq -- Bill.

HEMMER: Indeed it does.

Michael Holmes, thanks.

Stay safe there in Baghdad.
