SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: There have been two deadly incidents in Iraq today. The U.S. military says there are U.S. and Iraqi casualties.
Karl Penhaul is embedded with the 101st Airborne and he joins us live by phone from Falluja -- Karl, good morning.
KARL PENHAUL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi there, Soledad.
Yes, I'm on a base outside the town of Falluja, which is west of Baghdad, with the 82nd Airborne Division Task Force. I'm told by U.S. military sources that there was a large roadside bomb that went out -- went off in the nearby city of Khaldiyah. That went off about two hours ago now, local time.
I'm being told by U.S. military sources that three U.S. soldiers have been killed, one Iraqi has been killed and that there's one U.S. soldier wounded and three Iraqis injured. It's not clear who the Iraqis were, whether they were civilians or whether they were part of Iraqi security forces accompanying that U.S. patrol. But what my sources do tell me is that that roadside bomb was detonated as a U.S. military convoy was passing.
It's not clear at this stage, certainly from the details that I have so far managed to glean what unit these soldiers were from. Although the 82nd Airborne is the head of the task force out here, there are other units assigned to it.
But certainly Khaldiyah one of the main cities within the so- called Sunni Triangle and this obviously the heartland of the Iraqi resistance to coalition occupation here in Iraq -- Soledad.
O'BRIEN: Karl Penhaul, who is embedded with the 82nd Airborne joining us this morning.
Karl, thank you.
