O'BRIEN: You've been listening to Frank Pierson and Sigourney Weaver presenting the list of nominees for the 76th Academy Awards, which, as they mentioned right there at the very end, will take place on the very last day in February, February 29 of this year.
Some very tough competition will be seen on that day because certainly in the best actor category, all the usual favorites were named: Johnny Depp, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Sean Penn. It will be a tough race to win there.
Best picture, "Lord of the Rings" was a nominee; "Lost In Translation" a nominee; "Master and Commander," "Mystic River" and, also, "Sea Biscuit," all being named as nominees for best picture.
Overall, "Lord of the Rings" won with 11 -- or leads the pack, we should say, with 11 nominations; "Master and Commander" coming in second with 10 nominations; "Cold Mountain" with seven; "Sea Biscuit" with seven; "Mystic River" with six nominations overall.
Of course, we're going to have our panel, our pop stars, our pop tarts, as we sometimes like to call them. The 90 second pop panel will come in and weigh in on this pretty interesting list of those who have been nominated for the 76th Annual Academy Awards, which will take place on the last day in February.
