Nancy Grace
Arias Parents in Police Interrogation
Aired April 29, 2013 - 20:00 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
NANCY GRACE, HOST: Tonight, an inside look at Jodi Arias from people who knew her well, her parents. Jodi Arias slashes and shoots her lover, Travis Alexander, and is now on trial for murder one. She says self- defense, but even the words of her own parents make you question that.
We`re taking you inside the police interrogation room as they question Arias`s parents just two months after Travis Alexander`s brutal killing. This is interrogation, moments that even the jury has not seen, Jodi Arias`s parents, William and Sandra, painting a picture of a manipulative liar, a girl who began manipulating them as early as 14.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How are you doing? You doing OK?
SANDRA ARIAS, MOTHER: Not good! I feel like I`m going to puke!
Maybe she did do it. I don`t know. I just cannot even imagine her doing it!
Jodi has mental problems. Jodi would freak out all the time. I`ve had quite a few of her friends tell me that I needed to get her some help.
Jodi`s a very intelligent person. (INAUDIBLE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE)
SANDRA ARIAS: (INAUDIBLE) (INAUDIBLE) her friends called and told her that he died (INAUDIBLE) freaked out, like she knew nothing about it. I mean, how could somebody do that? Oh, I can`t -- I can`t (INAUDIBLE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE)
SANDRA ARIAS: I can`t think of it, how anybody could do that!
WILLIAM ARIAS, FATHER: (INAUDIBLE) strange person because (INAUDIBLE) after she left the house, (INAUDIBLE) kind of strange (INAUDIBLE) really (INAUDIBLE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How`re you doing? Are you OK?
SANDRA ARIAS: Not good. No.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE) be expected, I guess, huh?
SANDRA ARIAS: I feel like I`m going to puke!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You going to be OK?
SANDRA ARIAS: Yes (INAUDIBLE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I`m a police officer from Mesa, Arizona. And obviously, I came down here to talk to Jodi and talk to her about this case. And (INAUDIBLE) talking about Travis Alexander, her ex-boyfriend. He was killed back on June the 4th. And we have a lot of evidence to kind of put her there. And she`s not willing to explain any of it. She won`t talk to me.
SANDRA ARIAS: Well, I talked (INAUDIBLE) she left. She called me from Arizona. I mean, that was from Monterey. And I talked to her, and she told me she was going to Utah. And she came back and she was fine. (INAUDIBLE) she said, I spent a lot of time with some friends (INAUDIBLE) I wanted to stay there because they were going four-wheeling, but I had to come back and work, so -- how could somebody -- now, you say she did this - - come back and just be normal?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know.
SANDRA ARIAS: I can`t -- I can`t even...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I can`t imagine (INAUDIBLE)
SANDRA ARIAS: Can`t think of it, how anybody could do that!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That`s why I wanted her explanation, but she just absolutely refused to tell me the truth. She has no explanation for why this evidence is there, but yet she doesn`t -- she doesn`t even want to look at the evidence. It`s -- she doesn`t want to talk about it. She just says, No, I didn`t do it.
And it`s so cold, the way she does it. It -- it`s like she just -- she doesn`t even feel. Somebody who`s being accused or -- you know, or is presented with something like this, of this magnitude, acts more like you, surprised, upset, angry. She`s -- she`s had nothing, absolutely nothing in her eyes. And you know, just the fact that she says she loved this guy, and I have to believe her, I guess.
Basically, we -- just to give you a quick rundown -- I know you probably wants some details, but her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, was killed in June, June 4th. And it was during the time when Jodi was traveling from here to Salt Lake City.
And she did -- we did track her route, and we believe she did go to Mesa. And we have a lot of evidence in the house that points towards her as being the person who committed the murder. The only thing I don`t have is why, why she committed this.
WILLIAM ARIAS: I don`t -- man, she was getting along with him so good. She was -- you know, because he was even offering her a car (INAUDIBLE) then U-Haul ruined it because they didn`t take it out of gear because she didn`t know what she was doing.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, I talked to her for over an hour-and-a-half, and I left with more questions than I had answers for. I still don`t know why. She just refuses to tell me why.
WILLIAM ARIAS: She won`t talk to us, either.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She won`t talk to me. And I`ve been talking to her since the day after Travis was found. I talked to her on the phone, and she called me three times that week. It was a couple times the following week. Every week, she calls me. And I just sense that there`s something there. And from day one, even before we found our first piece of evidence linking her to it, I knew there was something there.
WILLIAM ARIAS: Well, you know (INAUDIBLE) first thing, she doesn`t trust is because we`re her parents.
SANDRA ARIAS: God, again, I just can`t even think about it!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Unfortunately, the evidence that we have is completely convincing to me. I mean, we have everything from her fingerprints at the scene of the crime...
SANDRA ARIAS: Well, I know her fingerprints are there.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... her DNA, her -- things like her hair, you know, things like that.
SANDRA ARIAS: Well, you know she spent time with him, though, so does that prove that she killed him? She cleaned his house.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The evidence that we have is more than just that. It`s more than just that. I mean, you don`t leave a fingerprint in blood.
SANDRA ARIAS: Oh!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK? All right. So...
SANDRA ARIAS: Why would she do something like that?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know. And that`s what I was trying to...
SANDRA ARIAS: She just snap, or what? I don`t know. And then how could she come back here and be normal, and then when her friends called and told her that he died, she totally freaked out, like she knew nothing about it. I mean, how could somebody do that? How? I can`t -- I can`t even...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I can`t imagine.
SANDRA ARIAS: ... can`t think of it, how anybody could do that!
We had a relationship. She wouldn`t tell me anything, nothing.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Was she talking about leaving town, about...
SANDRA ARIAS: Well, she was -- she talked about not staying here, but she didn`t come out and say, I`m leaving tomorrow. I went over to talk to her last night for a little while because I couldn`t sleep, and I called her and I said, Are you still awake? Can you borrow Gramps`s car and come over? Because she would come over late at night and visit with the kids and be on the computer.
She had a plane ticket to fly down to his funeral, but she got a flat tire on the way down and got a new tire for her car, and they put the wrong tire on it. So she had to go back to Redding, and it ruined the transmission in her car, or helped it along. It was probably already bad. I don`t know.
But she was really distraught about that. In fact, she called me and was just driving around. She said, I don`t know where I`m going, Mom. I`m just driving. And she called me from Redding. She stopped to see my son, and he said all she did was cry and then left because she missed the funeral.
So how -- how could -- how could she do something like that, I mean, all these things, all these other things that happened that say she didn`t? You know?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know.
SANDRA ARIAS: So what`s going to happen to her?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t think she`s -- I hope she`s not that cold- blooded. But I mean, every indication I`m getting, she doesn`t want to talk about it and she`s very cold about it. If that`s not the description of cold-blooded, I don`t know what it is.
SANDRA ARIAS: I didn`t know she was leaving today. I -- she told me she was going to go down to visit, but I don`t know. Maybe that phone call scared her. I don`t know. Maybe -- you know, maybe she did do it. I don`t know. I just cannot even imagine her doing it!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I can`t, either. And that`s...
SANDRA ARIAS: (INAUDIBLE) very intelligent person! (INAUDIBLE) the books that she brought to my house! And then she`s got all these books that I would not even think about reading, you know? And she`s smart and - - how could...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I understand she`s extremely intelligent. And the more I`ve talked to her over the last month-and-a-half -- I know she`s intelligent. But...
SANDRA ARIAS: You know (INAUDIBLE) she gave me a hard time because I never went to college and she kept telling me, Mom, you need to -- you need to read. You need to do this. You need to better your life. And -- I don`t know. I just -- I can`t even imagine (INAUDIBLE) Jodi had a lot of - - a lot of plans for her future. How could she mess it up and do something that you said she did?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did you have any suspicion at all that she had anything to do with his death?
SANDRA ARIAS: I asked her. I asked her because that`s the first thing I asked her, when she came home and she was fine and then when he died, she didn`t call me then. She called my daughter. And she was just totally in tears. She cried for two or three or four or five days.
And that`s the first thing I asked her. I said, Did you go to Arizona? And she said, No, I was nowhere near Arizona, and I have gas receipts and everything to prove it. And that`s all she would say is she swore she did not go to Arizona. So of course, I believed her, you know, but I questioned her about it.
WILLIAM ARIAS: I just can`t believe that she would do this. When she told me she was going to Utah, she told me her route. She was going to go down to see some friends at Big Sur (INAUDIBLE) and then she was going to go to LA to the convention, and she was going to (INAUDIBLE) up to Utah.
You know, I says -- I mean, after this happened, you know, I just kind of got an inclination. I go, Wow, man. I don`t think so because she was just acting so normal. And then when she heard about the news, I think it was either Friday or Saturday (INAUDIBLE) killed (INAUDIBLE) on Thursday or something?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He was found on a Monday, Monday the 9th, late at night.
WILLIAM ARIAS: OK because I know it was that weekend she bawled her eyes out. She was already back. And you know, everything was nice. She came over to the house once (INAUDIBLE) and she went home. And then that day, I called her and she couldn`t talk. And I go, What`s going on? She goes, Travis was murdered.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What did you think?
WILLIAM ARIAS: I didn`t think much. I just thought, What the hell?
And she said, I can`t tell you what`s going on, but all I know is I got to leave. And I go, Why? She goes, Because I might be blamed for something. I go, What? And she goes, I can`t tell you. She goes, I just won`t tell you. (INAUDIBLE) never tells us (ph).
Even this morning when I picked her up at the house to go to the (INAUDIBLE) I says, OK, your final chance. She says -- she says (INAUDIBLE) she said that she was going to be back in three days, she told us. At least she told me that. And I said, Are you going to tell me or what? I says, I want to know. And she goes, Can`t tell you. (INAUDIBLE) get involved in anything, so I`m not telling you nothing.
She told me that she quit her job yesterday because the police had called. I said, Well, what are you running away for if you`re not guilty? She goes, Because I don`t want to be a part of it. I don`t want to be part of anything, or something like that. And I go...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Where was she going?
WILLIAM ARIAS: I have no idea. She just told me she was leaving, and (INAUDIBLE) see us some other time but it`s going to be a while. And then today, she told she was going to be back (INAUDIBLE) because she left a lot of her stuff at her grandma`s house.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
GRACE: Coming up: You think Jodi Aria`s testimony and personal journal would reveal some strange behavior? Well, watch what her own parents tell police.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
GRACE: The defense is trying its best to show Jodi Arias is the victim of brutal abuse, but the words of her own parents tell a very different tale.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
WILLIAM ARIAS: She`s a strange person because (INAUDIBLE) after she left the house, you know, just kind of (INAUDIBLE) strange. You know, she was really friendly. Sometimes she`ll call and real sweet, and 10 minutes later, she`ll call in a rage, you know, just screaming at my wife. She did that for (INAUDIBLE) for the last year-and-a-half, she was doing that a lot.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Any idea why?
(CROSSTALK)
WILLIAM ARIAS: Only thing I can tell you is that (INAUDIBLE) probably financial problems because, you know, she didn`t -- she was going to file bankruptcy, but she didn`t have the money to (INAUDIBLE) lost her house, broke up with her other boyfriend prior to Travis. And -- I`ve never seen a picture of Travis. She never showed -- she showed my other kids, but she`s never us anything.
She called my wife and was really kind of crazy, man.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So she would definitely go off? (INAUDIBLE) upset about him (INAUDIBLE)
WILLIAM ARIAS: She was upset, and she treated my wife like crap.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Really?
WILLIAM ARIAS: I mean, verbally abusive on the phone with her. You know, we could never ask her anything about her personal life ever since the day she left the house (INAUDIBLE) because she would never tell us. She`s just secretive about that.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did you ever think that she would possibly hurt herself or anything?
SANDRA ARIAS: Yes. A lot. She worried me. In fact, she talked to me about it a lot.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What kind of stuff did she...
(CROSSTALK)
SANDRA ARIAS: ... things like -- she talked about suicide to me a lot. And she said, The only reason I don`t do it, Mom (INAUDIBLE) and it`s because of us. And I said, Do you know what Travis`s family is feeling right now? I said, If you killed yourself, I said, that`s what we would be going through, only worse because you took your own life. I mean, not worse. I don`t know what their family`s going through. I think if you can imagine -- if you imagine how you`re feeling right now with Travis, imagine what we would go through. And she said, That`s the only reason I don`t, Mom.
She`s having financial problems, and that was another reason we moved her up here. She`s really in debt. She bought a house with her other boyfriend...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And lost the house?
SANDRA ARIAS: And -- yes, and he moved -- in Palm Desert. And he moved back to Monterey, and she stayed there. And their house payment is, like, $3,500, and she maxed out her credit cards trying to pay her part of it, many thousands of dollars because she always thought that she could just dig her way out.
And then her car -- she didn`t make her car payments for months and months and months. Do they do a psychiatric evaluation when they do things like this?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I`m sure they will. I`m sure they will. It doesn`t come up in every case, but in her situation, it`s something (INAUDIBLE)
SANDRA ARIAS: Because (INAUDIBLE) one of the things when she was here (INAUDIBLE) I called (INAUDIBLE) she`s a member of the Mormon church, and I called the bishop here and wanted to know if there`s any way he could find out where she was going down there to the church because I wanted to talk to him and see if he could talk to Jodi and find out what`s going on because, like I said, she would just totally flip out on me.
And then I had one of her friends call me in the middle of the night, call us one night and say, You need to get Jodi some help.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE)
SANDRA ARIAS: Just, like, call me one minute happy, and the next minute in tears. And -- I mean, she was just -- like, she was a totally different person.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Feel like you wanted to help her, but she wouldn`t let you kind of stuff?
SANDRA ARIAS: Yes, and she would never tell me what she was crying about, but it was, like, a total, I mean, like, something would snap and she would always then be in tears and call me back (INAUDIBLE) you know and...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Does she have any kind of medication at all?
SANDRA ARIAS: No. And she`d call me here, and I couldn`t help her because she was so far away. And her friend called me one night, and he said he even called some hotline to ask them questions about what she was doing. And they said sounds like she really needs some help. But she wouldn`t do anything. So you know, I didn`t really bring it up to her. I thought if I brought up her here, where we could take care of her (INAUDIBLE) be OK.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
GRACE: Something didn`t seem right about Jodi Arias. Coming up, even her own parents admit there have been issues for years, since childhood, as a matter of fact.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
GRACE: Jodi Arias`s behavior doesn`t just raise red flags for police and prosecutors. Her parents have been concerned about their daughter for years. Let`s go back into the interrogation room with police for more of the parents` questioning.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
SANDRA ARIAS: She would not even let me come down to Monterey to visit her and stay at her house because she was afraid I would snoop through her stuff. So that`s the kind of relationship she had. She -- she did not...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Just like some trust issues.
SANDRA ARIAS: She did. And I don`t -- I don`t know. I told her one day, I said, You need some help, Jodi. I said, You`ve got this fantasy in your head that you had a rotten childhood and that we searched your room all the time and we did all this stuff, and we didn`t. And you need some help because that didn`t happen.
The only time we ever searched her room was when she was in 8th grade and she was (INAUDIBLE) and she was growing pot. And we were getting ready to move, and couldn`t find my Tupperware container. She had it on the roof, growing pot on the roof with her friends.
And so we called the police and turned her in and wanted something done, you know, to scare her and whatever. And that`s the only time I have ever in my whole life searched a room. I don`t search my kids` rooms now, which maybe I better start doing, I guess, huh? I don`t know.
WILLIAM ARIAS: When she was in 8th grade, she got busted for growing marijuana with our Tupperware, putting it on the top of the roof. We found it and called the sheriff department. And they busted her, and then we (INAUDIBLE) friends or something. And then we searched her room. That was the first time we`ve ever searched her room.
After that, she was so -- she was kind of like -- something turned in her head that we were nosy parents and we were going to search everything she had, so she hid everything from us and always has since then.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Wow.
WILLIAM ARIAS: Never -- she`s never been honest with us since then. And she was probably 14 then because she has never been honest with us ever since then.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did you have your suspicions that she might have been involved in Travis`s death?
WILLIAM ARIAS: I looked at it this way, you know, because after -- you know, it was like a day-and-a-half or two days later, I think that she heard about it because she was quite normal until then. And then when she heard about it over the phone, she was hysterical because -- I think I talked to my in-laws and they said she`s been crying all day. And I go, What about?
So I went over there (INAUDIBLE) hysterical. That was several days after his death. I guess someone found him. I don`t know how many days he`d been there.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Five days.
WILLIAM ARIAS: Five days? Yes, because it was the weekend when I know that she was -- she had -- I think she had just had (INAUDIBLE) a job at the Purple Plum. She didn`t even want to go to work because she was just -- face was all blotched up from crying.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes. She doesn`t like going out without makeup and looking like that.
SANDRA ARIAS: This last couple of weeks, she has -- or since Travis`s death, she has been the best relationship we`ve had in our whole life. And I said maybe this death has made her see that life is short, and you have to -- you know, you can`t -- you can`t be this way and it`s changing her. So you know, the last -- the last few weeks have been -- I mean, I didn`t spend a lot of time with her, but I talked to her more than I have ever talked to her since she left the house at 18.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
GRACE: Coming up, more is revealed about Jodi Arias from her mother and father, her own parents, as police interrogation goes on.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
GRACE: Jodi Arias killed Travis Alexander, stabbing him 29 times, shooting him in the head. Throughout the trial, we see how she tries to manipulate the jury. Well, the police interrogations of her parents show she`s been lying and manipulating them for years. The jury hasn`t seen this, but now you will.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
SANDRA ARIAS: Jodi has mental problems. Jodi would freak out all the time.
WILLIAM ARIAS: (INAUDIBLE) and when she was -- she called me and started yelling. I said, You know what? Have you ever thought of yourself to being bipolar?
SANDRA ARIAS: ... said Jodi is bipolar and she needs help.
WILLIAM ARIAS: (INAUDIBLE) abusive on the phone with her. You know, we could never ask her anything about her personal life.
MOTHER: She told me she did not want to stay here long. She was going to leave. She did tell me that she was going to go down to Monterey for a few days, but she didn`t tell me when. She said she was going to go down there and visit some friends and stop and see my step daughter, Ann Hollister.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What was the urgency for her to leave like soon?
MOTHER: I don`t know. I didn`t know she was leaving. I did not know she was leaving today.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Your husband mentioned something about her not going to work and quitting her job. She was upset because someone like a police officer called her work for some reason.
MOTHER: Somebody called her -- she told me that somebody called her yesterday and wanted to question her about the break in at my mom and dad`s house. She did tell me that, and she said why don`t you want to talk to my grandma and grandpa? Because it was their house. And she did tell me that, but no mention of anything else. I don`t know if that scared her. I don`t know. I know she bought a gun. Which they probably already found the gun.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, she has it registered and everything, so there is nothing wrong with the gun.
MOTHER: She told me she was scared when Travis died. She said, mom, I was at his house all the time. She cleaned his house, she spent a lot of time. In fact, Travis was supposed to come up here and they were going to go over to the Oregonian coast --
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: When did she tell you about that?
MOTHER: It was after he died. No, it was before he died. She told me he was coming up. In fact, it was last weekend I think she said this is the weekend that Travis is supposed to come up and we were going to go to things, they were going to go to Crater Lake. They had a book, thousand things to see before you die. And her and Travis were doing a lot of those things together.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Do you know if she had access to any guns or anything besides the one she just bought?
MOTHER: Well, she was at my dad`s. My dad had guns.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Do you know if he had like a little .25 caliber handgun?
MOTHER: He had a gun stolen from his house. Somebody broke in and took the gun and a couple of VCRs and DVD players and stuff. But as far as I know, she was with my younger daughter at that time, because she had my car. And when I called her when my mom and dad came home, they were up in Hilt. She went up to look at a monastery or one of those religious things up there. So, I don`t know. I don`t know what kind of gun he had taken. Did you talk to my parents yet?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, I haven`t talked to them yet.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She told me she got a gun, I said, what do you need a gun for? She said, where I am going, I might need one. I said, well, where are you going? I can`t tell you. She goes I just want to feel safe where I go.
I go, you know what, you can`t carry it loaded in your car. You can`t carry it anywhere in the car. You are going to have to keep it in the trunk and separate. If it`s clip, and if it`s bullets, you are going to have to keep it separate from where it is.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She got it registered. Yes, she got it here in Yreka.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did anybody have access to like a .25 caliber?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Because there`s a .25 caliber shells, I don`t know if it`s at your house or grandma`s house.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, I used to have all kinds of guns, but the .25 that I had, I had it in a `84 Toyota that we had when I lived in (inaudible) at the time, and somebody broke into it and stole it. They broke the windows, stole it, and cleaned out my car.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That was years ago?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The thing is, that I had gone shooting and I put all my stuff in an ice box, you know, because they had ice boxes back then in those cars. And they used it, somebody used it and robbed a Shell station and they got the guy, and they called me up and they told me that they found your gun, because I had to make a police report. But it was a .25, and I didn`t use it, because it had a little, one of those clips, and I couldn`t, every time I shot it, it hit my hand.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Automatic?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I got it for my wife. And I really bought it for me, but I bought it for my wife, you know, just to have a different kind of gun.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Do you still have that gun?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No. I never went back and got it. Because I didn`t care for it.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK. So they told you somebody used it in a robbery but you never went back for it.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No. It was back probably `88 or `89.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Do you know if your in-laws had a gun? .25 auto?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No. Do you know -- that was a .22, I think. Someone broke into my in-laws` house and they stole the gun, a pistol.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes. That report says it was a .25 auto.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, it was?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes. The reason I`m asking is because a .25 auto was used. That`s why. And I didn`t know if she had access to one or not.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know. But they took a lot of stuff in the house, I mean, I remember because they took a lot of things.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I just got a copy of it today, so I wasn`t sure if somebody just reported or if maybe she reported it. Do you know who made the report? Was it your in-laws or was it Jodi?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I know Jodi was in Medford. And then yes, I was kind of concerned about it.
MOTHER: I don`t know where she would have gotten a gun if she got one. I don`t know. Jodi`s very secretive. Jodi does not -- that`s the way she is. So what happens if she is found guilty?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, then she will be sentenced, however long they decide.
For the rest of her life probably.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know. It`s not up to me. I don`t know. It depends on a lot of factors.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
GRACE: Parents usually try their best to talk about the good in all of their children, but with Jodi Arias, the parents couldn`t help but touch on the bad and the evil. More from Jodi Arias` parents interrogation coming up.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
GRACE: Jodi Arias claims she was the one on the wrong end of an abusive relationship. But it was Travis Alexander that ended up dead, stabbed and shot by Arias. Even her own parents could see Jodi Arias had problems and would, as they say, freak out.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
MOTHER: Jodi has mental problems. Jodi would freak out all the time. I`ve had quite a few of her friends call me and tell me that I needed to get her some help. In fact, I had one call me in the middle of the night and tell me that she needed help. Jodi would call me -- we didn`t have a good relationship, me and Jodi.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Your husband kind of told me about the relationship.
MOTHER: She would call me in the morning all happy, and call me an hour or two later in tears, crying and sobbing about something she didn`t want to talk about. And that happened constantly, and her friends thought -- too -- I had one friend call me in the middle of the night, and he even called a hotline for bipolar people and said Jodi is bipolar and she needs help. And that`s when we talked her into coming back here so she could be around family.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She just shut down, she completely shut down. I was hoping maybe she`d at least tell me why, but she just -- you know, I guess it`s the same treatment you have been getting for the last I don`t know how many years, you know. Just nothing.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I mean, it`s just like a straight face. Nothing there. I keep telling, I mean, I told her one time when she called me and started yelling. I said, you know what, have ever thought of yourself as being bipolar? Oh my God, she cried, she cried, hysterically, and she called back and I hung up on her. That`s what I do when she starts going off on me. I just hang up. And she called up and kept calling and kept calling and kept calling until I could tell her no, I was just kidding. I told my wife, I said, you know, I think I hit a fine tooth there.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It is kind of strange.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That is just the way she`s been. When she was in Palm Desert after that, man, that`s when everything, I don`t know what, it`s been a couple years then. She`s been a little crazy for a year. It`s been longer than that. All I think about is when she moved to Palm Desert, because you know, she started using credit cards to make her $3,000 a month payments. Because she lost her job or something, and then she got just financially in debt.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That`s not good. She hasn`t been in a good situation in a while then.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No. It`s been bad.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, this Travis guy, I guess helped her out quite a bit.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: As far as I know, but I do know that one day when she called me crying hysterically when she decided to move to Mesa, Arizona, she snuck up to his house and she looked in the window and she saw him there on the couch with another woman. And she was planning on marrying this guy. So she just left. But then she stayed there for I don`t know how many months.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She couldn`t explain it either. I said, you guys are broken up, why don`t you just leave? Why don`t you go home? Why don`t you -- she said well, I didn`t. I just didn`t. And she could not tell me why.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Jodi would not let anybody say anything to discredit him either, because I did say a few things after she told me that he was with another girl. I said you need to get the hell out of that town and leave that guy alone.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Every time I called her, she was over at his house. Every time I called her. She would say, he is letting me use his computer. She was all over there and she was in there cleaning his house, she was all over the place in there. I said, but -- she said he wasn`t dealing with any women that I know of, and I think any time maybe he went out with a woman or something or she kind of had a suspicion, that is my thought.
Somebody called her and she got a little hysterical and quit her job. Well, she called up and said she wasn`t coming in.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She actually called me.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did she?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She called me and was asking how the investigation was going. And I didn`t want to tell her I was coming up, because you know I didn`t want--
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How did you guys catch her anyway?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She was at the house.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, she stopped there?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, she as at the house. Her grandma`s house.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Was she on her way out already?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, I went out and took her to Hertz, she said she was only going to be gone three days.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did she rent her a car?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, she used her own car.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: But she was going to rent a car?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She did, I think she did.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: On that trip that she took to the L.A. area or whatever before she went to Utah, did somebody rent a car for her that time? Or did she rent one?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I really couldn`t tell you. I know her car has been screwing up. But she ragged that thing. Infinity, she ran it to the ground, transmission was going out. Tires were bald.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That`s a girl for you. They don`t take care of things.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Nothing. I said, when is the last time you changed the oil? She said it had been over a year.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And she travels a lot in that car.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I know. She put a lot of miles on it. She was always going places.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I was hoping she would have told you something. I guess your wife went over there last night to talk to her again?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What was that conversation like, did you ask your wife about it?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know. No, she always -- she has been leaving. She was going to leave. She just wants -- she was trying to spend as much time as she can as possible, and then last night after she came back, I guess she was on her way back, Jodi called me and told me that she needed me to pick her up at 7:30 in the morning, take her to a rental place so she could leave town. I thought it was going to be for good, and I`m thinking mmm. And then (inaudible), she says oh don`t worry, dad, I`m only going to be gone for three days.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She didn`t say where she was going or anything?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She didn`t tell me nothing. If she was going to go anywhere, I think she was going to see her friend, Matt.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: In Utah?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, in Big Sur or Monterey, and then her ex- boyfriend. The other one -- I forget his name. Darryl. Because -- probably because I helped her load some stuff. She says, this is going to be for Darrell and this is going to be for Matt. Some things she had in the car and her suitcase, but she says I will be back in three days. I said, OK. That was it.

GRACE: Coming up, more on Jodi Arias and what her parents called strange behavior.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
GRACE: After killing Travis Alexander, Jodi Arias lies to friends, police, even herself in her own journal. She wasn`t admitting to anyone that she is the killer. And you can add Arias` parents to the list of people that she deceived. Let`s go straight back into their police interrogation.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She seem like an obsessive personality, that she would be obsessed with this Travis guy?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, because when she talked about him and they broke up, she goes, she was just going to stay in town and work, she goes, because I still need it, because I don`t need you guys to be, you know, trying to help her along. I need to get a job and straighten my life out. I said OK. But she kept calling, she always called my wife more because my wife was more lenient with her and sent her the money -- I`m sure she sent a lot of money without me knowing, because I wouldn`t send her nothing. I said, you know what? You can just, I said I could just go pick you up and bring you right back. I said I`ll bring my truck and whatever fits in that is all you need to bring. And I said, you can just start all over again. And then finally, of course, she talked to my wife into going down there and blowing all that money on that truck and all her stuff. Most of it`s given away or thrown away. And she brought some of it to the house. What`s the use of bringing it if you`re just--
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, it`s frustrating.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And she was always calling, crying that she needed more money, forking out more money. And when she moved here, we gave her, my wife went -- took time off work, went down there, rented her a U-haul, put out $2,500 to bring her back here. And what is she doing? She`s leaving all her crap in the storage room. She didn`t care. She was going to leave it there. We paid for it to come here.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Has she been staying with -- is it your parents or your wife`s parents?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: My wife`s parents. She`s been staying there ever since. She won`t stay in our house because I told her, I have rules and regulations here. I said, you go to bed at a certain time. You`re not going to keep us awake. And she didn`t like that. She spends all night up. She o`clock and then she sleeps all day because of her job.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She`s working as a bartender still or--
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She was.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know if it was you that called me yesterday the day before?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, it wasn`t me.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did she ever have any access to any firearms or anything?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She just got a gun.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What kind of gun is that?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know.
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She mentioned a Glock or something like that?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
GRACE: Even Arias` parents are not immune to her lies. Coming up, stories of more lies and deceit from inside the police interrogation room with Jodi Arias` parents.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
GRACE: We remember American hero, Marine Corporal Max Donahue, 23, Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal. Parents Julie and Greg, stepfather Chad, brothers Ryan, Jordan, Taylor. Max Donahue, American hero.
Straight back into the interrogation room, where Jodi Arias` parents continue to be questioned about their daughter. Their daughter on trial for the murder of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I truly believe she was involved in it. I wasn`t sure if she did it herself.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That`s what I`m wondering.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Or if she had help with somebody. But she would not tell me. She absolutely just refused. And she`s continuing to say that you know, I had nothing to do with it. She`s completely cold about it. No emotion whatsoever.
So, what`s going to happen at this point is there`s a warrant out for her arrest, obviously, for murder out of Arizona. She`s being booked across the street at the county jail. She`s going to be seen by a judge, and we`re going to request extradition, basically permission to take her back to Arizona. And she can either waive that and say that`s fine, I`ll just go, I`m not fighting it. Or she can decide to fight it, but it just delays the inevitable anyways. So, once she gets to Arizona, she`ll be facing the charges there. And it`s up to her and an attorney to decide what they want to do. So, is she still involved in this Prepaid Legal thing, maybe she can find an attorney using that.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, my wife was just saying something about that today. She goes, I said what about Prepaid Legal? She goes, do you think they`re going to help her when Travis worked there and he was pretty high up there and he was pretty well-known and a pretty good guy from what I hear. I mean, Jodi was, she started sharing all the (inaudible) Internet about him that was written about him and she was writing things about him too on the Internet.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, what`s going to happen to her is she`s been booked into the county jail here. She`s going to see a judge. And the court out of Phoenix is going to ask for extradition. Request her to be transferred over to Phoenix. And she can either fight it or just go along with it.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Fight the extradition you mean?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes. Fight the extradition. That`s usually a moot point. It`s going to happen anyway, unless California has pressing charges on her for something else that`s serious or more serious, they usually say OK.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: So, since we don`t live in Arizona, then we can`t be down there all the time. Will they let us know what`s going on with her?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Will somebody keep us informed and everything?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes. She can actually call you and talk to you on the phone. That`s no problem. There is -- she can call you every day if she wants to. OK? You can also get on the website, and it will tell you when her next hearing is, what the last hearing was about, you know, what`s going on with the court.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: How do you do that?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s just on the Internet. It`s the county is Maricopa County. You just go to the Maricopa County Superior Court web site, you look for criminal cases. Type in her name, it will have every criminal case with her name in it, OK? But for now, she`s in the jail over here, and we`re going to go ahead and start the extradition process today.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Can we see her today?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t know if you can see her today.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Can we see her before she leaves?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Pretty sure you can talk to her. I don`t know how long, usually it takes anywhere from a couple of days to a couple weeks.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
GRACE: Everyone, thank you for being with us. I`ll see you tomorrow night, 8:00 sharp Eastern. And until then, good night, friend.
