THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NANCY GRACE, HOST: Breaking news tonight, live, Omaha. A deadly shooting goes down during the filming of the reality show megahit "Cops." Bombshell

tonight. The death by gunshot wound wasn`t just for the cameras. This bullet is for real.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We need a squad here now!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Drop the knife, buddy! Drop the knife!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We have one of the "Cops" guys has been hit by gunfire. We need a squad here now.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: That video of "Cops" on 20th Century Fox Pictures.

And tonight, heart-breaking tragedy. A beloved teacher, breast cancer survivor, mother of four goes on summer vacation with whole family, when

out of nowhere, the car`s front windshield destroyed by a huge rock the size of a soccer ball, shattering the mom, Sharon Budd`s, face and head,

now breathing through a trach tube, facing manmade skull implants, prosthetic eye surgeries, hoping the mush that was once her face and jaw

can be molded back.

In the last hours, one of the four suspects turns on the others to save his own skin. And tonight, we obtain the graphic and heart-breaking 911 call.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my God! Something came right through the windshield.

Hi, I`m on the highway, route 80.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Four teenagers accused of throwing rocks off an Interstate 80 overpass.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my God! Half her brain is gone! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: And Salt Lake City suburbs, neighbors hear a kitten meowing from inside a trash can sitting in their yard. But when they go to rescue the

animal, it`s not a kitten, it`s a newborn baby girl thrown away like trash!

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: A small cry coming from this container.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Sounded like a cat.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The 3-day-old baby inside a trash can. According to police, her mother, 24-year-old Alicia Marie Engler (ph), is the one who

put her there.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: And tonight, to Indiana. A 1-month-old baby boy disappears from an alley.

Good evening. I`m Nancy Grace. I want to thank you for being with us.

Bombshell tonight. To Omaha, a deadly shooting goes down during the filming of the reality show megahit "Cops." But the death by gunshot wound

wasn`t just for the cameras. This bullet is for real.

Straight out to Tom Becka, show host at Mighty KOIL. Tom, what happened?

TOM BECKA, KOIL (via telephone): Well, the other night, the suspect, Cortez Washington, who has a previous record, held up a Wendy`s restaurant.

And what had happened is that the "Cops" was in town filming. And the situation was, there was another holdup at a fast food place about a few

blocks away about a half hour earlier, which -- which really sounds worse than it is. Omaha is not, like, this crime-ridden town.

But anyway, so "Cops" was in town. And the suspect was at that Wendy`s. Police arrived on the scene after getting informed of the holdup. And when

they arrived there, they saw the suspect with a gun. It turned out to be an Airsoft gun, but with a gun. And during -- the bullet -- tragically,

the sound man for "Cops," Bryce Dion, was -- was...

GRACE: Whoa!

BECKA: (INAUDIBLE) shot.

GRACE: Everybody, those of you just joining us, the megahit reality show "Cops" really reinvented the genre of reality show. And during this taping

of "Cops," the reality show, a real live shooting goes down. It turns deadly.

Also with us, Pat Lalama, investigative reporter. Pat, what do we know?

PAT LALAMA, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: Well, it`s absolutely tragic. Twenty- five years the show`s been on the air, never a problem. These are trained professionals doing this work.

Here`s what happened. So the "Cops" crew is with a backup -- two backup police officers. The cop inside calls for help. They show up. The sound

man is in a vestibule area, meaning it`s that area that -- you know, between the outside and then when you actually get into the dining area.

He`s there with the sound equipment. The cameraman is in another location. This suspect has a gun pointed at an employee.

GRACE: Whoa!

LALAMA: Shots are fired. And he -- he has a bulletproof vest on, Nancy. But unfortunately, it hits in an area near the armpit where he is not

protected.

GRACE: Everyone, during a filming episode of "Cops," the reality show, a deadly shooting goes down. Take a listen.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The suspect`s wearing a black hoody, white bandanna.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Have you both en route.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Have them expedite.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All cars expedite.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE) shots at Wendy`s.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Clear (ph) Wendy`s.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We need a squad here now.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: 49, 39 -- 43, we have one of the "Cops" guys has been hit by gunfire. We need a squad here now.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Fire`s been notified.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We need multiple squads! Two squads!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Are any officers hurt?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Squad 3 (INAUDIBLE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`ve got a "Cops" cameraman hit, white male. He`s not conscious. He`s slightly breathing.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE) suspects at large?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No one at large.

ROXANNE CALLOWAY, HELD UP AT GUNPOINT IN WENDY`S SHOOTING: It was just insane. It almost seemed like an out-of-body experience. I didn`t see any

of the gunshots, I just heard them all. I just backed myself into a corner as far as I can while it was all going on.

He pulled out what looked like a gun, which now find out it`s not a real gun. And he pointed it at me and told me to get all the money. I started

typing my codes in so I could open the drawer. And that`s when the cops came in. Kind of went from a blur from there for me.

The camera guy was just hysterical -- Stay with me, stay with me, someone call 911.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: And joining us right now from the scene, Roxanne Calloway, held up at gunpoint at a Wendy`s shootout during a "Cops" reality show episode,

taking reality way too far. Roxanne, thank you for being with us.

CALLOWAY: Not a problem.

GRACE: Roxanne, I know you`re still reeling from what happened. But what do you recall happening that night?

CALLOWAY: I was actually going close up probably early. I was -- I`m not supposed to do that, but we were shorthanded that night. It was just me

and two other crew members. When I turned around to go check lobby to see if there was anyone in lobby, I turned around (INAUDIBLE) tall guy standing

there with the black bandanna covering his mouth and nose. All I could see was his eyes and just a little bit of skin.

I froze. It was almost like -- in my head, I thought, Is this real? Is this a joke? So there was a good pause before he pulled out...

GRACE: OK, hold on right there. Everyone, joining me is Roxanne Calloway, held up at gunpoint during a deadly "Cops" episode shooting. Roxanne, at

first you actually thought it wasn`t real? You thought it was fake? Why?

CALLOWAY: Yes, it almost seemed surreal because, I mean, I`ve never encountered anything like this before.

GRACE: What happened then?

CALLOWAY: After the second pause (ph) when I saw him is when he pulled out what I thought was a gun at the time and pointed it at me. And he gave me

a plastic bag and told me to put all the money in the bag. My keys were actually over in the drive-through area, and me and him were more towards

the front of the building.

So he said, Hurry up. I went to go grab my keys. And when I got my keys, in a panic, I asked him which register. So we ended up -- I put my numbers

in the system to open up drive-through`s register. I pulled all the money out, and then I proceeded to get the big bills, as well.

As soon as I was done getting the money, I went to shut the drawer, and he kept saying, No, all of it. At that point, all there was, was change in

the drawer. So I started pulling the drawer apart to show him there was nothing else in there.

When he realized there was nothing else in there, that`s when he pointed up front and told me to hurry up. And at that point, we walked up front. And

as I was putting the numbers in to open the register, that`s when the police entered in. All I could hear was just screaming. I can`t remember

what was being yelled and just remember hearing gunfire at that point.

GRACE: Were you afraid you were going to die?

CALLOWAY: Yes. At that point, I didn`t know what was going on. The only thought going through my head was I wanted to get home.

GRACE: Because you`ve got a brand-new baby, right?

CALLOWAY: Yes. She was a month old that day.

GRACE: Oh, dear Lord in heaven! And here you are, working the night shift at Wendy`s with a brand-new baby at home, and you find yourself crouching

on the floor with gunshots flying around your head, bullets flying around your head, just hoping you`re going get home to that baby that night.

Everyone, a filming of a "Cops" reality show episode turns deadly for real. This bullet was for real, gunning down someone there on the scene.

Back to Tom Becka, show host at Mighty KOIL. Tom, thanks for being with us. How were cops first alerted to the scene?

BECKA: Well, they were alerted by a person at the drive-up window had seen what was going on, as I understand it. And they showed up and called 911.

And the officers were in the area, as I mentioned, working another call shortly before that. And so they arrived on the scene immediately. And

that`s when all of this took effect, took place.

GRACE: Take a listen to that 911 call.

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We need a squad here now.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: 49, 39 -- 43, we have one of the "Cops" guys has been hit by gunfire. We need a squad here now.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Fire`s been notified.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We need multiple squads, two squads!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Are any officers hurt?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`ve got a "Cops" cameraman hit, white male. He`s not conscious. He`s slightly breathing.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: Unleash the lawyers, Randy Zelin, New York, Areva Martin, LA. You know, Randy Zelin, a lot of people are saying this is all the police fault,

the cops` fault, that they were playing to the cameras and they wanted to take down a robber in a hail of bullets. That`s not true. It`s the

robber`s fault. It`s not the police officers` fault.

RANDY ZELIN, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: I have to tell you, I could not disagree with you more. When a cop leaves his home and kisses his kids good-bye, he

may not come home. When a cameraman leaves, he expects to come home. There is no way in God`s green earth anyone could reasonably foresee that a

cameraman or a soundman might get killed while filming an episode of "Cops."

GRACE: You know what?

ZELIN: That`s not within the scope of his employment.

GRACE: Tom Becka -- Tom Becka, Mighty KOIL, that is complete BS that Zelin is spouting because...

BECKA: It`s totally BS! I mean...

GRACE: ... the person -- the person whose fault this is, is the guy who goes into this Wendy`s in the middle of a night shift, while you`ve got

this woman, Roxanne Calloway there, brand-new baby at home, and he pulls a gun and he wants the money. This is who is responsible!

BECKA: As far as the sound man goes, the producers at "Cops" were in Omaha yesterday and they spoke to the media, as well as the police chief, and the

mayor all addressed it. And the producers of "Cops" went and they said, Look, this could have happened in any city. They say, We go all over the

world. We train our men and women how to react. They go through training. They`re all wearing bulletproof vests at the time. They were wearing

bulletproof vests. They were, you know, as protected as could be.

GRACE: You know, Tom...

BECKA: But the employees...

(CROSSTALK)

BECKA: ... of "Cops" knew the risk going in.

GRACE: ... I agree with you. It`s like these cops can`t catch a break. The lawyers, Randy Zelin, Areva Martin -- Areva Martin, so here`s a guy

armed to the teeth. He`s got a gun on this unarmed cashier at Wendy`s, all right, Roxanne Calloway, baby at home. So they come in, and of course,

they gun the robber down.

Now, somehow, somebody on the "Cops" production team gets shot, as well. This is not the cops` fault. This is the robber`s fault. And I really

resent the attack on the police!

AREVA MARTIN, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: You know, Nancy, there`s enough blame to go around for everyone.

GRACE: So Areva Martin, what you want is for the cops in the middle of an armed robbery to go up and go, Sir, you in the ski mask, is that a real

gun? That`s what you want?

MARTIN: No, Nancy. I want the cops to use the training that they have and to be responsible when they respond to a crime in progress. You can`t just

go in like it`s the wild, wild West and shoot the place up 20 times. What distinguishes the cops from the robbers? The cops are trained to deal with

situations like this. First of all, you have civilians with you. How irresponsible is that?

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`ve got a "Cops" cameraman hit, white male. He`s not conscious. He`s slightly breathing.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The episode changed, with a tragic ending that no one wanted.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: You are seeing video of "Cops" on 20th Century Fox Pictures.

Welcome back, everyone. A "Cops" episode of the megahit reality show turns deadly in real life when cops answer a call for an armed robbery, the night

shift of Wendy`s. A shooting goes down, all right, but a member of the "Cops" crew is the one who ends up dead.

We are taking your calls. Jason, hi. What`s your question?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hi, Nancy. How are you tonight?

GRACE: I`m great. Thank you for calling in. What`s your question?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, I have two quick questions.

GRACE: OK.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Will the episode be aired on TV? And how is the victim`s family doing?

GRACE: Good question. Out to you, Clark Goldband. Will it air?

CLARK GOLDBAND, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: Nancy, that question was actually brought up with the sheriff at a press conference, and that decision --

they`re not even going to think about it right now at this time. Everyone`s in shock. The sheriff says these guys and the crew of "Cops"

are like family. It`s like they`re mourning one of their own.

Now, Nancy, I want to bring something up. There was a brief reference last segment to a fake gun, or what appeared to be a fake gun. It`s not that

clear-cut. This suspect had, now we know, was an Airsoft handgun. It shot plastic pellets. Here`s the thing. You see it on your screen. Take a

look. Left side was the Airsoft pistol. Right side, actual handgun, number one.

Number two, the Wendy`s employee we have on the show, Nancy -- she has said she thought it was a real gun. Number three, this suspect fired not one

but two times in the direction of police officers. That`s when the decision was made by law enforcement to shoot. No one, no one -- multiple

witnesses all thought this was a real gun at the time of the robbery.

GRACE: Also with me, C.W. Jensen joining me out of Cave Creek, Arizona. C.W., weigh in.

C.W. JENSEN, RETIRED POLICE CAPTAIN: So I think everybody that watches those insipid cop dramas on TV or watches the news -- this is a typical

ballistic vest. So it fits over your head. And Nancy, you`ll have to tell me if you can see what I`m talking about because I can`t see...

GRACE: I can`t. Let`s take him in full, please.

JENSEN: Come on back here.

GRACE: Go ahead.

JENSEN: So it`s got Velcro, so you`re trying to pull the back end to the front end, which is easy. This vest is from 20 years ago when I was 20

pounds more. So what you`re trying to do is get this as tight as possible. You can see where it comes together.

Unfortunately, what can happen is, with getting out of the car, running around, doing your gear, that can sometimes split (ph) a little bit. So

here`s the danger area is right down here. It`s not here and it`s not here, it`s these side panels that can pull apart. And I think that`s

exactly what happened to this camera guy.

GRACE: Everyone, we are taking your calls. An episode of the megahit "Cops" reality show turns deadly when police answer a call, an armed

robbery of a late night shift, Wendy`s. When they get there, they see the robber, they see the gun, they unleash a hail of bullets, and a "Cops" crew

member dead.

Joining me right now, Roxanne Calloway, held up at gunpoint at Wendy`s that evening. You know, Roxanne, a lot of people are finding fault with the

police, saying it`s their fault. I disagree. And I`d like to hear what you have to say.

CALLOWAY: I completely agree with you on this point. Technically, at that point, it was a hostage situation. He had me at gunpoint. And from what I

heard is he did fire first. I`m not 100 percent what happened. I just know I heard gunfire. And I commend the Omaha Police Department. They did

what they had to do to get me home safe.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

GRACE: A beloved teacher, breast cancer survivor, mother of four goes on summer vacation with the whole family, when out of nowhere, the car`s front

windshield destroyed by a huge rock the size of a soccer ball, shattering the mom, Sharon Budd`s, face and head. In the last hours, one of the four

suspects turns on the others to save his own skin.

And tonight, we obtain the graphic and heart-breaking 911 call.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my gosh. Something came right through the windshield.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Pushed an 8 inch boulder from an overpass through the car window, her face smashed. She lost an eye.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Very, very malicious, violent.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There`s a rock that came in. She is grasping for her life.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (INAUDIBLE) what do you say about all this?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I have no comment at this time.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my God! Half her brain`s gone! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: Horrific and heart-breaking. This mother of four, a breast cancer survivor, on her summer vacation, just like all of us, just like I did.

You pack up the children, you put everything in the back, and off you go.

As they were going under an underpass, these four drop a rock the size of a soccer ball. This is the actual rock, four to eight pounds. Next thing

you know, it comes straight through her windshield, front windshield. There she is in the passenger seat, minding her own business. And her

children, sitting in the back, see the whole thing. Take a listen to this.

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

911 OPERATOR: What color is your vehicle?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s black.

911 OPERATOR: And you have the four-ways on?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hold on here. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on here. Oh, hold on here. Yes, I do now.

911 OPERATOR: OK.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There is a big -- there`s a rock that came in. She is grasping for her life!

911 OPERATOR: OK. What is your name, sir?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: My name is ran Randy Budd.

911 OPERATOR: The phone number you`re calling from?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my God! Half her brain`s gone! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

Oh, my God! Something came right through the windshield.

Hi. I`m on the highway, route 80. Something just came through my windshield and it hit my wife, and I think it went right through her head.

Oh, my God! Can you please get an ambulance somewhere here? Can you track the phone?

911 OPERATOR: Where on Interstate 80 are you?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my God! What?

911 OPERATOR: Are you going east or westbound?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re going west.

911 OPERATOR: You`re going westbound? I`m sorry. What are you driving, sir?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Pardon?

911 OPERATOR: What are you driving?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What did you say, sir?

911 OPERATOR: What kind of vehicle are you driving?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We are in a -- oh, (EXPLETIVE DELETED). We`re in a Rogue, a Nissan Rogue, pulled off on the left-hand side. This -- this is

bad.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

GRACE: I don`t know how he even had the wherewithal to speak to dispatch.

Straight out to Sarah Bartlett, reporter WKOK.

Sarah, I understand that one of the four young men were in court and basically is ratting out the others to save his own skin. Keefer McGee.

He`s pleading guilty to what and how much time is he -- getting?

SARAH BARTLETT, REPORTER, WKOK: That`s right, Nancy. Keefer McGee is pleading guilty to the same felony charges, though. His will be in the

second-degree because he says he was in the car. He didn`t throw the rock and it was Dylan Lahr who threw the rock.

GRACE: You know, I`m very, very surprised they`re taking a plea on anybody because I think they`ve got enough evidence to try them all together.

They`re all going to blame each other and claim they`re not the ones that threw the rock.

Take a listen to what the father tells us.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BUDD: We were all awake. And all of a sudden it`s as if somebody would have put a grenade in that car, that`s what it sounded like. I mean it

just was an explosion. And none of us. We didn`t know what happened. I looked up and just saw a big, big hole in the windshield. I still didn`t

know -- my daughter started screaming. She goes, dad, what should I do? What happened? And I said -- and so I talked to her over to the side of

the highway.

We came to a stop. She turned the lights on and saw her mom`s head sideways and saw the most gruesome thing that probably anybody could ever

see with her head split open with her base of her skull and her brains visible. Kayley screamed and ran from the car. I immediately ran around

to the car to see what she saw. And oh, my god, it was gruesome.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BUDD: I called 911 immediately. Kayley, she`s so strong. She came right back in. So I was -- I was on the passenger side. Kayley climbed in in

the driver side and we just -- we just held her hand. That`s what we thought at the time when she was just bleeding out. There was blood coming

out of her nose, her mouth, her brain. And then she came to. And when I mean came to she started moving. And she was just moving all over the

place and trying to grab at her face.

I don`t know if she remembers it. We were trying to keep her hands down so she didn`t injure it more. And then she started -- she started gurgling in

her own blood. And we just kept waiting and waiting for the ambulance. The only way she could breathe was through her brain. And it was -- oh, my

god, it was terrible.

She went through a 13 -- over a 13-hour surgery to totally put her face back together. It`s in many pieces. They did open up the brain and

discovered that the right frontal side of her brain was damaged. They had to remove --

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: Straight out to Dr. Tim Gallagher, medical examiner, forensic pathologist. This as we learn one of these four defendants is going to be

out of jail basically in a couple of months for what he did to this mother of four.

Dr. Gallagher, again, thank you for being with us. She`s going to have to have complete reconstructive surgery on her face with a manmade -- so part

of her brain actually had to be removed. They had to pull splinters and pieces of her skull out of her brain. She is breathing through a trach, a

tracheotomy right now.

What do you make of it, Dr. Gallagher?

DR. TIM GALLAGHER, MEDICAL EXAMINER, FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST: Well, obviously a very serious injury. You know, the rehab, the recovery is going to be a

lifelong process. The brain is unique in that it is divided into left and right halves. And sometimes when one half is destroyed or is damaged the

other half may compensate for the loss of the other half. This will be a lifelong, many surgery, long-time situation of rehab for her.

GRACE: I mean, she`s never ever going to be the same, Dr. Gallagher. I mean, they had to remove part of her brain. And her children were in the

backseat when the whole thing happened, Dr. Gallagher.

GALLAGHER: That is true. The frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for your personality. And I could imagine a very large personality change if

she does recover to an extent where she can interact with people again.

GRACE: Straight out to Michael Christian, also on the story.

Michael, how is it that one of these four manages to get basically straight probation? They`re giving him two years in the county jail. They`re

treating him as a juvenile. And what that means on two years, he`ll probably do six, seven months.

MICHAEL CHRISTIAN, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: Well, Nancy, this is a defendant, Keefer McGee, who was 17 at the time. Some of the other defendants were

that young as well. But police believe that his -- according to his version he was not a principal player in this in the sense that he didn`t

throw any rocks. He has been willing to testify against the others and they are planning to use him to testify against the others in upcoming

hearings and trials.

GRACE: So bottom line he`s going to walk in a couple of months with this travesty, devastating injury to this mother of four because he`s going to

rat out the others. I`m not quite sure why they needed him to testify.

Sarah Bartlett with WKOK, why did they need him?

BARTLETT: Well, Nancy, I think that they needed at least one of the boys to say, I didn`t throw the rock, and I saw this person throwing the rock.

And now it`s up to decide whether it`s about who specifically threw the rock or should they all go down because they planned to go out and do

something bad and this was the result.

GRACE: I mean, they were all together.

Unleash the lawyers, Randi Zelin, Areva Martin.

Randy Zelin, they were all together. And this is not their first time at the rodeo. They have been out wreaking havoc and committing crimes all

night. It wasn`t the first time they did this. They`re a gang. One for all, all for one. And in my book and under the law, the black and white

letter of the law, they did this together.

ZELIN: A jury is going to want to know whose hand was on the rock.

GRACE: Yes.

ZELIN: And if the prosecution cannot tell the jury whose hand was on the rock, that is built in reasonable doubt.

GRACE: Hey. Hey. Look at your monitor. Look at your monitor, Zelin. This is the home that they vandalized before they practically murdered

Sharon Budd, the mother of four, the breast cancer survivor, who was just trying to take her children on summer vacation. That`s the home they

vandalized.

What about that? They`d been on a crime spree. And you know what I say? All of them together, you put them all on trial, let them stew in the same

pot. They`ll all tell the jury. It will get out who threw the rock.

And another thing, Areva Martin, the reality is this. Say the three of us go rob a bank, and you go in and gun down a teller, it doesn`t matter if

I`m sitting out in the getaway car, I`m part of it. To throw a boulder the size of a soccer ball off an overhead passageway to a car.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Neighbors hear a sound coming from their trash can.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We found a baby in the garbage can.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The infant is a girl. Paramedics arrive and police soon follow. Hours later the infant`s mother is escorted from her parents`

home.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: And now we take you to the Salt Lake City suburbs. Neighbors hear a kitten meowing from inside a trash can, a trash can that`s sitting in

their yard. But when they go out to rescue the kitten, it`s not a little animal, it`s a newborn baby girl thrown away like trash.

Straight out to Jim Kirkwood, KTKK. What happened, Jim?

JIM KIRKWOOD, NEWS SHOW HOST, KTKK AM 630: Apparently this young woman who the parents claim is developmentally disabled, had the baby. In fact, the

bizarre part of this, Nancy, the parents were in the front room visiting. She went to the bathroom, had the baby, didn`t make a sound. And then

after the parents left the next morning, puts the baby in the trash.

GRACE: Matt Zarrell, it`s my understanding that the mother who threw the baby away in this trash can -- there she is. Threw her away like trash,

said, well, I wanted to throw the baby away. I hoped it would die because that would solve all my problems.

MATT ZARRELL, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: Yes, you`re right, Nancy. We obtained a probable cause affidavit statement from the police that claims that the

mother directly told them she hid the pregnancy from the parents, hoped the newborn girl would die in the trash and solve her problems, and did not

give the baby any medical care or food after the birth.

GRACE: Matt, what was the condition of the baby when police found it? I know the little thing is trying to -- is clinging to life tonight.

ZARRELL: Well, yes. The first thing, Nancy, is that the baby actually had garbage on top of her inside the trash can. Police say the baby was

suffering from hypothermia and malnutrition. And reports say the umbilical cord had not been properly cut.

GRACE: Everybody, you are seeing a shot of Alicia Marie Englert, 23, the mother of the baby she hoped would die in the trash claiming that would

solve all of her problems.

Joining me right now, special guest, Sheriff James Winder, Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake.

Sheriff, thank you for being with us. Sheriff, how did you track down the mother?

SHERIFF JAMES WINDER, UNIFIED PD OF GREATER SALT LAKE: Miss Englert was at the residence. Actually at work. After we responded we contacted her and

she returned voluntarily to the scene.

GRACE: Sheriff, you know, we hear of this very, very infrequently. But to throw away a newborn baby trying to deceive everyone around her, try to

fool them into not knowing she was pregnant then claiming she thought by throwing it in the trash it would solve all her problems?

What did she do when you arrested her?

WINDER: Well, Miss Grace, if I may, I don`t want to claim that there`s an epidemic of this kind of thing occurring. But I will say that in our

jurisdiction, I would dare say and others similar size even throughout the nation the phenomenon of individuals, you know, being in a circumstance

where they attempt to conceal a birth and eventually frankly discard that child is not unheard of. It is unfortunately I won`t say frequent but we

see them. And so it isn`t a one-off situation.

But this case has some unique elements and obviously are both disturbing but I would urge people to, you know, take just a moment and recognize

there are many factors that influence and affect the case at this time.

GRACE: Sheriff, I agree.

With me, Sheriff James Winder. Right now "CNN HEROES."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JEN LEARY, CNN HERO: I was a firefighter in Philly for seven years. You get to a fire scene and the firefighters are there to put out the fire.

The Salvation Army and the Red Cross assist the people once the fire was out. But there just wasn`t anyone there to help the other part of the

family.

I would see how upset the people were about their animals. You know, where is my pet? And then where is it going to go?

These are the people`s children. They`ve just lost everything. They shouldn`t then be forced to lose their pets as well.

We have a dog misplaced by a fire, a Chihuahua. I`m headed to the scene now.

We respond 24/7, 365 days a year. We do per pet what the Red Cross does for people. We went into the basement, found the dog hiding behind

something. Once the fire is under control, we`re able to look for the animals and bring them out.

Hi, baby. Come here.

Red Paw headquarters is my house. We`ve helped close to a thousand animals. She`s been at my house and the owners said she was pregnant.

Everything that their animal needs we`ll handle for free for them.

When we reunite the families, it`s a good thing. It`s like this void has now been filled.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hey, Chocolate. Welcome home.

LEARY: My hope is that a fresh start, that they can move forward together.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They`re home.

LEARY: After going through such a sad thing, it`s so good to have a happy ending.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

GRACE: We are receiving word out of Indiana that a one-month-old baby boy disappears from an alley.

To Sergeant Kendall Adams, PIO, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Sergeant, thank you for being with us. So the father, I understand, is going for a walk with the baby. He is in an alley and he is attacked. He

says the baby taken by a white male and a Hispanic female?

SGT. KENDALL ADAMS, PIO, INDIANAPOLIS METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT: Yes, that`s what he told us at approximately 12:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. He

was out for a walk and was apparently involved in a robbery where he was pistol whipped and he lost consciousness for a brief moment and when he

woke up his six-week-old baby was being taken by a Latino female.

GRACE: OK. Take a look at this baby. Urgent. This baby missing tonight. 1-888-58-AMBER. Let`s see a photo of the father taken very quickly after

this incident.

Pat Lalama, investigative reporter, he is saying that he`s pistol whipped. I don`t see any cuts or bruises on his face.

LALAMA: No, and he was unconscious but wakes up just in time to see the baby being snatched and sped off in an older model blue Taurus? So

something smells in Indianapolis.

GRACE: He is not a person of interest or a suspect.

To Dr. Ramani Durvasula, clinical psychologist, you know, I find this very suspicious. Could you explain to me the stresses that go on when they

first have a baby?

RAMANI DURVASULA, PH.D., CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST: I mean, obviously having a baby, you know this, Nancy, I know this as a mother, it`s sleep

deprivation. It`s a tremendous responsibility. It`s a cost. It`s -- I mean, there`s so many things that hit a person. And if they`re not

completely prepared, they can find it very overwhelming, especially if they don`t have support in place and they have other problems.

They`re using drugs, they have psychiatric issues. So can some people not handle it? Absolutely. Now is that associated with what culminated here,

we don`t know.

GRACE: Dr. Ramani Durvasila, out of L.A.

Here`s the bottom line, Pat Lalama, whatever happened, I want to find the baby, whether the father is telling the truth or not. Repeat, he`s not a

person of interest. I want to find the baby.

LALAMA: Absolutely.

GRACE: What`s happening in the search?

LALAMA: Well there`s an Amber alert. The cops are sleepless and relentless in doing whatever they can because that of course is the

priority, despite the fact that the father got arrested for pot. They`re saying it`s two different situations at this point. And they want to find

that baby so anything anybody can do to help is certainly welcomed.

GRACE: Everyone, the tip line, 1-888-58-AMBER. 1-888-5826-237.
