Showbiz Tonight

A Look at the Most Outrageous Star Wedding Ceremonies Ever; Outrage Over O.J.

Aired November 15, 2006 - 23:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

A.J. HAMMER, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: Barbara Walters tells me what she thinks is the best thing she has done this year. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.
BROOKE ANDERSON, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: And as our countdown to the Tomkat wedding continues, a look at the most outrageous star wedding ceremonies ever. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. TV`s most provocative entertainment news show starts right now.

HAMMER: On SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, the outrage over O.J. This is unbelievable. A book and a TV special where O.J. Simpson talks about how he would have murdered his ex-wife and her friend, if he did it. Tonight SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with the O.J. outrage that has everyone asking, are you kidding me?

Tonight, who is the sexiest man alive? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is rounding up the usual suspects. But who is the dreamiest of the dreamy, the hottest of the hot? Who will it be? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with the inside story of "People Magazine`s" sexiest man alive.

Hello, I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.

ANDERSON: Hi there, everybody. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. And what we are about to tell you is so outrageous, so unbelievable, you would think we were making it up.

HAMMER: That`s right Brooke. It is all about O.J. Simpson and there is such a deafening roar of outrage over what he is about to do, we almost had to pop in the ear plugs. Listen to this, O.J. is going to be telling how he would have killed his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, if he had done it -- if.

ANDERSON: What`s more A.J., he is going to do it on a TV show and in a book. We kid you not.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The interview that will shock the nation.

ANDERSON: That may be the understatement of the century. Shock and a healthy dose of disgust are greeting the Fox Networks`s plans to air "O.J. Simpson, If I Did It, Here`s How it Happened," a special where O.J. actually details how he would have killed his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Remember, he is saying, if he did it.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You wrote, I have never seen so much blood in my life.

O.J. SIMPSON, FORMER PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL STAR: I don`t think any two people could be murdered without everybody being covered in blood.

ANDERSON: Oh, and did we mention that according to the "National Inquirer," O.J. is getting paid three point five million dollars for this hypothetical confession and the brand new book that`s coming with it. It`s so brazen that when SHOWBIZ TONIGHT hit the streets to tell New Yorkers what O.J. was up to, they thought we were pulling their leg.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If I did it -- if I did it. Why doesn`t he just tell the truth and say he done it?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It is just kind of like laughing at our judicial system.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s like go away.

ANDERSON: No one has ever accused O.J. of having good taste before, so why start now? There was the time he allowed a film crew to shoot his less than savory behavior for a planned documentary and the time he pretended to sell his infamous white Bronco to an unsuspecting used car buyer on his practical joke DVD, inspired by Ashton Kutcher`s "Punked."

And there are plenty of people saying O.J.`s latest venture sinks him to a new low. And some are saying the same about the Fox Network.

HOWARD KURTZ, MEDIA CRITIC: This is the most appalling, shameless, exploitative thing I have heard of in the history of television, maybe the history of recorded civilization.

ANDERSON: "Washington Post" media critic and CNN host Howard Kurtz tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that more than ten years after O.J.`s acquittal for the killings most people still think he got away with murder.

KURTZ: To put on a guy who everyone in the country believes murdered two people and have him play this little game about, if I did it, and to do it in this smarmy way, where he doesn`t acknowledge what he did, it he really just is, even by television standards, absolutely awful.

ANDERSON: Wait, this story gets even more interesting. In the upcoming Fox special, O.J. is being interviewed by famed publisher Judith Regan, who runs a division of Harper Collins Publishing, which is owned by the news corporation which also happens to own the Fox Network. Is this synergy gone wild?

KURTZ: The only conceivable rationale for Fox to put this on, in addition to pushing a book published by another part of the corporation, is the idea that it is going to do a big ratings number, that people will be so curious or so drawn to this sort of car wreck of a show, that they will tune in in large numbers. I hope people just say no.

ANDERSON: But will viewers say no? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT asked people, despite their disgust, would they actually be tempted to watch the O.J. special?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Probably.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, maybe, probably about five minutes or so, but not -- nothing too much.

KURTZ: To put on O.J. Simpson talking about maybe, if he had killed these people, here`s how he would have done it, suggests to me that I was too optimistic about the television business, that there really are no standards anymore.

ANDERSON: But maybe there are.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: O.J. Simpson, lord help him, murder. Did I say that? I think I did.

ANDERSON: The hosts of "The View" were having a heated discussion about the O.J. special when Barbara Walters made this startling and well received revelation.

BARBARA WALTERS, HOST "THE VIEW": I was offered the interview and turned it down.

ANDERSON: Proof that O.J. is still too tasteless for TV for some, if not others.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON: As you can imagine, the family of Simpson`s ex-wife is not happy about the Simpson special. In a statement, Nicole Brown`s sister Denise tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT quote, we regret that Nicole`s children, Sydney and Justin, will be exposed to Simpson`s inexplicable behavior. She goes on to say, we hope Ms. Regan takes full accountability for promoting the wrongdoing of criminals and leveraging this forum and the actions of Simpson to commercialize abuse.

HAMMER: I`m having a hard time believing this is even a real story. The outrage continues now with Gloria Allred. Gloria, of course, was the attorney for the Nicole Brown Simpson`s family in O.J. Simpson`s criminal trial. Gloria joining me from Hollywood tonight. Also in Los Angeles tonight, investigative journalist Pat Lalama, who covered the O.J. trial extensively. I appreciate you both being with us.

So, Gloria, I thought somebody was playing a practical joke when this story started making the rounds. I really thought they were just kidding. Obviously, as we just saw, we have seen O.J. capitalize on this case before. But this just takes the cake, doesn`t it?

GLORIA ALLRED, ATTORNEY: Well, it does A.J. And it`s a ridiculous title to say, if I did it. Let`s remember that even though he was acquitted in the criminal case, in the civil case a jury found that, in fact, he did do it, that he was responsible for the deaths of Nicole Brown, the mother of his two little children, whom he left lying in a pool of her own blood, almost decapitated outside the condo in which the children were sleeping, and that he was responsible for the death of Ronald Goldman, may they both rest in peace. And they awarded a multi-million dollar verdict against him. So we know how he did it, because there is a record in the civil case, and we know what the prosecutors alleged in the criminal case.

HAMMER: And it is obvious why everybody is floored by the fact that he is putting this out. Pat, you spent a lot of time covering the O.J. trial way back when. Other than the obvious need for money, why would O.J. Simpson do something like this?

PAT LALAMA, INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST: You know, this is crystal clear to me. I`m telling you A.J., the fact of the matter is that this is a man who revels in the attention, will seek it out wherever he can possibly find it, and clearly Fox and Judith Regan both know that there is a marketplace for his shenanigans.

What happens in this particular case, A.J. is that they are really squeezing the last ounce of consumerism out of him. Because they are taking him right up to that level of the almost confession, some have said. But, do you want to know something? Did he sit down with his children and say, guess what, kids, I`m going to do a book and a TV show about, if I did kill your mother, this is how I would do it. Imagine that.

HAMMER: Yes, imagine that. Gloria, obviously you know this case as well as anybody. You had to get into O.J. Simpson`s head to do the work that you`ve done. You write about your experiences in your book, "Fight Back and Win." What do you think? What`s going on in there?

ALLRED: Well, obviously, A.J., Mr. Simpson apparently has very little regard for the feelings of his own children. Of course, how could he care about his own children if, in fact, he killed, which he did, their mother? What a horrible, grotesque act that was. And now he brings up the death of their mother once again, as though this is fun, as though this is a game. And these two children have been left mother-less, and I`m sure that`s not a game to them.

HAMMER: Fun, a game for him, and cashing and a paycheck too, Pat. You know, obviously the money a big motivation for O.J. After he lost that civil trial, he was ordered to pay 33.5 million bucks to the families. If they have seen any of that, I understand it is very little. Are the families ever going to see any money here Pat?

LALAMA: Well, I think it is probably unlikely that they are going to see the kind of money that they anticipated. And you want to know something? My understanding is that anything he makes from this, they would be allowed to go after. But my question, knowing Fred Goldman as I have over the years, who wants that kind of money? I mean, the best -- someone suggested here today that maybe what he would do is if he could get any portion of that, is to set up a foundation for O.J.`s kids, which would be a great and wonderful altruistic thing to do. But I can`t imagine.

I mean, to me -- you know, everyone has the right to do this. And look, the powers that be at Fox, they`re ingenious in very many ways. It is clear by their programming. There`s no doubt about it. They have every right to do this. But for me personally, to sit in a room and even make the deal with him, I would rather whack him where the sun don`t shine. So I think Fred is probably in a position where he`s thinking, do I want this kind of money.

HAMMER: What a disgusting way to make money. And as you said, for the Goldmans and the Browns, you know, maybe that`s exactly what O.J. had in mind, that they wouldn`t want this.

LALAMA: Exactly.

(CROSS TALK)

ALLRED: I don`t agree with that. I think they have every right to go after the money to satisfy that judgment, which mainly he has been playing cat and mouse, and trying to evade paying over the years. And the estate of Nicole Brown Simpson, which did sue him successfully, the beneficiaries of that estate are his children, Sydney and Justin. And so I do hope that they, and the estate of Ron Goldman, do go after the income from this book and interview.

HAMMER: Gloria and Pat, I got to wrap it there. Gloria Allred and Pat Lalama, I appreciate you being with us tonight.

LALAMA: Thank you.

ALLRED: Thank you.

HAMMER: If you want to hear more about Gloria Allred`s experience with O.J., pick up her book, "Fight Back and Win." It`s in stores now.

ANDERSON: Is "Gray`s Anatomy`s" Dr. McDreamy the dreamiest guy in Hollywood? What about George Clooney or Brad Pitt? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT reveals "People Magazine`s" sexiest man alive, coming up.

HAMMER: Plus, outrageous star weddings, from star and Al, to Liza and David, we`re going to take a good look at the celebrities who said the most over-the-top "I Do`s" ever. We`ll also have this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: Do you think when people are tuning in these days to Katie, or deciding not to tune in to Katie, they do it because it is a woman?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ANDERSON: Iconic journalist Barbara Walters, her thoughts on Katie Couric at the anchor desk. Plus, what she says is the best thing she has done this year. Barbara Walters, coming up in the interview you`ll see only on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York. Time now for a story that made us say, that`s ridiculous! We`re talking about some very unsportsmanlike behavior at a kid`s football game tonight. It was actually the adults doing all the cursing and fighting. I guess that`s not so unusual these days, but look at this. It`s a pee-wee football game in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Now this whole thing got started when a referee threw the coach out of the game for swearing. Well then the ref was knocked unconscious. And that`s when the parents started in on the fighting. Charges have actually been filed against the coach who threw the first punch. A fine example these adults are showing, adults brawling at a kids football game, now that`s ridiculous!

ANDERSON: Well, if a pee-wee football brawl turns you off, here`s something to turn you right back on. It`s about to rain men and not just any men. They are "People`s Magazine`s" sexiest men. They have money, power, stardom, and the most important character trait for this popular list, they have got sex appeal.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON: Mirror mirror on the wall, who`s the sexiest man of all? According to "People Magazine," his first name is George, but we know him best as Clooney. He`s sexy and single. He`s an Academy Award winning actor and this year has added director and Darfur activist to his resume. It`s a "People Magazine" tradition. It`s their sexiest man alive issue and SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is here to take you through Clooney`s close competition.

While not the sexiest man alive, Justin Timberlake gets the credit for bringing sexy back in 2006.

DANIEL CRAIG, ACTOR: What about a drink at my place?

ANDERSON: Bringing sexy back to Bond in "Casino Royale" came easy for Daniel Craig. And did he make success look sexy? His press play debuted at number one on the billboard charts.

And there is "Gray`s Anatomy`s" McDreamy, Patrick Dempsey, a sexy TV surgeon most women would pay money to be stuck in an elevator with. And according to "People" these next few guys are so hot, you can virtually feel the heat. Las Vegas` Josh Duhamel and "Daybreak`s" Taye Diggs are bringing sexy back to prime time. The Pitts, Damons, Depps and Wilsons of the bring screen bring that special something back to us year after year. There is lots of sexy in the cast of NBC`s hot new hit "Heroes," and we have to honor those who make bald look beautiful, like Keenan Ivory Wayans. But, in the end, Clooney takes the cake. Why? The "Sex and the City Girl`s" said it best.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: George Clooney. Ah, Clooney. Clooney`s like a Chanel suit. He`ll always be in style.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON: So, let`s dig right into some of "People Magazine`s" sexy men. Joining me from New York, Julie Jordan, "People Magazine`s" west coast associate bureau chief. Julie, I want to start with George Clooney, of course. He makes the cover for the second time. Why is George the sexiest man alive? That`s quite a statement.

JULIE JORDAN, "PEOPLE MAGAZINE": It might be easier to say why isn`t he sexiest man alive. He is so charming, so self-deprecating. He is truly the Carrie Grant (ph) of this century. I love when we spoke to him, he said that women have rejected him over the years. A lot of us find that really hard to believe. Maybe during those scary hair days, but not in recent years. This guy has got everything.

ANDERSON: Back when he had a Mullet maybe, but not now. The guy has got charisma, no doubt about it. And Julie, many of the men of the year are dads, Brad Pitt, Ashton Kutcher, Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman (ph), Patrick Dempsey. Why are they considered so sexy? It is pretty hot to see a devoted dad, isn`t it.

JORDAN: Well, I think it`s about being a family man. The fact that these men love their children. They are trying to create a better world for their children. You have got to admire that, not to mention they are really good-looking guys. So it is kind of a complete package. And, you know, fitting for this issue.

ANDERSON: Well, I mentioned Brad Pitt. Let`s take Brad Pitt. We`re looking at him right now. He`s a new father. This is actually -- in the past he has been named sexiest man alive twice.

JORDAN: Right.

ANDERSON: And he is on the list this year. What is it about him that just makes him so irresistible?

JORDAN: Well, with Brad, he is the kind of guy who, you know, besides, of course, the physical appeal, now with Angelina and the fact that they are creating this family together and his humanitarian efforts, again, across the board, this guy`s got everything going on. And this isn`t a really good year for Brad. He is always going to be a contender for the sexiest man alive. He and George actually kind of always -- he has been holding the two-timer over George`s head. Now he can`t do that anymore. You know they are going to compete for three times in years to come.

ANDERSON: Absolutely, and I`m sure they joke about that with each other all the time as well. Daniel Craig, a new face in "People Magazine." And after this weekend he is going to be a really recognizable face, because he is the new James Bond. His film "Casino Royale" does hit theaters this weekend. What makes him so darned sexy.

JORDAN: You could say it`s the Bond, James Bond persona. I think the character itself is very sexy. So, he`s got big shoes to fill, with Pearce Brosnan (ph) and Sean Connery, but he is pulling it off. People who see him in the film, besides the fact that he has such a hard body, and he shows a lot of it in the film, he really, really has that sex appeal. And, you know, women everywhere are responding to him.

ANDERSON: Yes, and those piercing blue eyes are enough to make you melt.

JORDAN: A little bit, yes.

ANDERSON: And you go a little bit off the page with this next one, John Kracinsky (ph) from "The Office." Tell us what women find so appealing about him. You named him the sexiest office cut up.

JORDAN: Right, well he`s got that sense of humor and that`s what we love about him. Plus, he`s a good looking guy. He says that, you know, it is all about making women laugh. That`s what makes him feel comfortable. Plus, he loves children, again, back to that whole men with children and the dad syndrome, so appealing, so sexy. So, yes, John`s got it going on as well.

ANDERSON: Yes he does. And silly is sexy sometimes. Julie, I feel we just had a little bit of girl talk over coffee or something. We`ll have to do it over coffee for real sometime.

JORDAN: Definitely.

ANDERSON: Julie Jordan from "People Magazine," thanks so much. And you can get your copy of "People`s" sexiest man alive issue on news stands Friday.

So what was Barbara Walters connection to George Clooney being named sexiest man alive? A.J. gets that answered in an interview with Barbara Walters. We`ll have that at 43 minutes past the hour.

HAMMER: And as we countdown to Tom Cruise`s wedding to Katie Holmes, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT takes a look at the most outrageous star weddings ever, from Star Jones to Pamela Anderson, the over-the-top ceremonies are coming up.

ANDERSON: Plus, did Nicole Richie have gastric bypass surgery and then get it reversed? The SHOWBIZ TONIGHT Truth Squad is on the case. The answer next. We`ll also have this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WALTERS: The best thing I have done this past year --

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: What is the best thing Barbara Walters says she has done this past year? What Barbara Walters told me about everything from "The View" to Katie Couric. That`s coming up in the interview you will see only on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

ANDERSON: Time now to call in the SHOWBIZ TONIGHT Truth Squad, where our crack team of celebrity investigators sets the record straight on Hollywood`s biggest mysteries. Tonight we`re opening case files on Madonna, the cast of "Sex and the City," and Nicole Richie.

First, a French magazine says Madonna is planning to adopt another baby from Malawi. This time a baby girl. Madonna`s publicist tells the SHOWBIZ Truth Squad, that`s totally not true. She said Madonna was speaking in general about wishing she could adopt all the children, but she has no plans to adopt another child.

Next, it`s a rumor that`s been rumbling around for a while, that "Sex and the City" is coming to the big screen. So, will there be a "Sex and the City" film? It looks good. Sources tell the SHOWBIZ Truth Squad that HBO restarted talks with the four actresses last month. HBO told us it`s too soon to go into details, but they have always loved the idea of a "Sex and the City" movie.

Now to a rumor about Nicole Richie, which started after the "New York Post" ran an item that said, an unnamed Hollywood starlet had gastric bypass surgery and then had it reversed after losing too much weight. Richie`s reps says speculation that it`s her is ridiculous. They tell "People.com" that there is no truth to that rumor. There you have it. The SHOWBIZ Truth Squad closes the case on three Hollywood rumors.

HAMMER: From Nicole Richie to Richard Simmons. He also has some weighty issues on his mind. Our good pal Richard Simmons is here with his take on all the celebrity obsession with body image. And wait until you see what he`s wearing. Coming up.

ANDERSON: Plus, outrageous star weddings, from star and Al, to Liza and David. We`re taking a look at the celebrities who said the most memorable "I Do`s" ever. We`ll also have this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: Do you think when people are tuning in these days to Katie, or deciding not to tune in to Katie, they do it because it is a woman?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: Iconic journalist Barbara Walters giving her thoughts on Katie Couric at the anchor desk. Plus, what she says is the absolute best thing she has done the year. Think about it. We`re talking about Barbara Walters. And she is coming up in the interview you`ll see only on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT for Wednesday night is coming straight back.

(NEWSBREAK)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. It is 30 minutes past the hour. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.

ANDERSON: And I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. This is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show.

HAMMER: Brooke, Barbara Walters has put a fun little special together called "Thirty Mistakes in 30 Years." Hard to believe Barbara`s made any mistakes. But it`s not just her mistakes; it`s her guests` mistakes. It`s going to be on tomorrow and Friday. Coming up, I`m talking to Barbara about some of those mistakes - one in particular that has haunted her for years.

Also, what`s her take on Katie Couric on the "CBS Evening News." That`s been getting a lot of attention. We want to hear from the news icon Barbara Walters herself. That`s coming up.

ANDERSON: Interesting. I have a lot of respect and admiration for her, A.J.

Also tonight, in the "SHOWBIZ Weight Watch," Kate Winslet really lashes out super-skinny stars and gives them some advice about food. And our good friend Richard Simmons, who knows a lot about food and fitness - he stops by to give us his take on the celebrity obsession with body image and so much more. (INAUDIBLE)

HAMMER: Wait til you see what he`s wearing tonight.

ANDERSON: I can`t wait.

But first, the SHOWBIZ TONIGHT TomKat countdown: just three days left til the wedding of the year, when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are expected to say their "I do`s" in Italy.

And all this week, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is the entertainment news show with your most complete coverage of the upcoming TomKat wedding.

Tonight, we`ve got your first look at Tom Cruise in Italy. Here he is with his son Connor, leaving his hotel in Rome.

And take a look at this: it`s a high-above-the-sky shot of the medieval castle where Tom and Katie are supposed to tie the knot this Saturday. Pretty nice, huh?

It`s probably the closest we`ll get to the wedding, though. They - this castle is under Fort Knox-like lockdown.

HAMMER: Now, as part of our weeklong TomKat countdown coverage, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT`s taking a special look at the best, the wackiest, the strangest stories of celebrities and marriage in Hollywood.

Tonight, we`re dealing with the most over-the-top celebrity weddings ever. There have been a few. The couples may not have lasted, but sure we do still love to talk about their weddings.

Joining me here in New York, Carolina Bermudez from Z100`s "Elvis Duran & the Z-Morning Zoo."

It`s a pleasure to have you here.

CAROLINA BERMUDEZ, Z100`S ELVID DURAN & THE MORNING ZOO: Well thank you for having me.

HAMMER: Let`s get into this, because this is so much fun.

BERMUDEZ: Oh, yes.

HAMMER: You can`t talk about over-the-top weddings without talking about Liza Minnelli and David Gest.

BERMUDEZ: Let`s get into it.

HAMMER: This was back in 2002. They spent something like $3 million on this wedding.

BERMUDEZ: Practically -- $2.7 million, $3 million. That`s what people projected.

But when you have Michael Jackson - Jackson as a groomsman in your wedding and Elizabeth Taylor as a blushing bridesmaid, people are going to talk about it. This was over the top. The celebrity watch was 1,500 people, and most of them were all celebrities.

HAMMER: And a few strange celebrities. I mean, you - you mentioned Michael Jackson. Not.

BERMUDEZ: Yes.

HAMMER: Not that we think he`s strange.

BERMUDEZ: No, not at all.

HAMMER: But - but it was a - an assortment of odd balls there as well.

BERMUDEZ: Definitely.

I mean, you had your regular characters. Actually, Barbara Walters was there. And Gloria Gaynor was there at the reception. She sang "I Will Survive."

Unfortunately, the wedding - or, the marriage didn`t last. But.

HAMMER: It didn`t quite work out that way.

BERMUDEZ: But it was - it was definitely a spectacle.

HAMMER: Well, Liza obviously spent a lot of money on that wedding. As we said, almost $3 million.

Let`s move to the other extreme. Perhaps the moocher wedding of all time.

BERMUDEZ: Oh, goodness.

HAMMER: Star Jones and Al Reynolds got married. It was a big, extravagant affair. Yet they barely paid for anything.

BERMUDEZ: That`s right. They say love doesn`t cost a thing, and neither doesn`t a wedding when it comes to Star Jones, because this was an endorsement from the very beginning.

A lot of people thought it was more of a business transaction than an actual romance. But I think if Star could have advertised on wedding dress - she had 27 feet to advertise on - she probably would have done that.

I mean, she had an official carrier for her weekend. So Star kind of took it another level.

HAMMER: Yes, certainly (INAUDIBLE) the classiest move around, is it?

BERMUDEZ: No.

HAMMER: And - and - and what, you know, Star wants - wanted to portray that "I am classy" - you know, this is a - a wedding to end all weddings. But it`s something that really hung around and haunted her for awhile.

BERMUDEZ: Definitely. And I think it affected her job and her credibility. I mean, this was a Park Avenue wedding. It was held at the Waldorf Astoria - the - the reception. And again, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton was there; Barbara Walters was also in attendance. Patti Labelle sang at the wedding.

So it was definitely a star-studded affair. But it wasn`t the classiest way to have a wedding.

HAMMER: Speaking of not too classy, let`s talk about Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson. They`re - they`re both very nice; I like them both. However, in their multiple weddings that they had.

BERMUDEZ: Yes.

HAMMER: .for this marriage, it wasn`t exactly, you know, the - the icon of class.

BERMUDEZ: Not - not really.

When clothing is optional, you know it`s going to be fun. And Pam is a fan of wearing bathing suits at her weddings. So they started out in San Tropez, where they - it took place on a yacht. And Pam was giving celebratory lap dances to her guests. So that should pretty much paint the picture for you.

But then they went ahead and took it to Nashville. They had another ceremony at a honky tonk dive bar. And then they took it to Detroit, where they went ahead and had the more traditional wedding.

But, yes, it wasn`t exactly the classiest of all.

HAMMER: Hey, maybe not what they were going for.

I want to make sure we have 30 seconds to squeeze in Celine Dion. Her much older husband slash manager Rene Angelil. They renewed their vows back in 2000 in Vegas.

BERMUDEZ: Yes. It was an Arabian wedding. It - they wanted it to be themes from 1,001 Knights. But anytime you bring in farm animals and llamas and camels, it`s going to get a little dicey there. So I think they went a little over the top with that one.

HAMMER: Well, it`s Celine Dion, and it`s (INAUDIBLE) - it`s your - you`re going to expect to have some drama, right?

BERMUDEZ: Definitely. But it was held at Caesar`s Palace. I don`t know if that was exactly the right place to have it. But it was a Moroccan, Arabian theme, and people had fun, and I guess that`s all that really matters, so.

HAMMER: Carolina Bermudez from Z100 and "The Elvis Duran & the Z- Morning Zoo" radio program, I appreciate you being with us.

BERMUDEZ: Thank you.

ANDERSON: In tonight`s "SHOWBIZ Showcase," "Reno 911: Miami." Now, if you`ve got no clue about "Reno 911," it`s a hilarious series on Comedy Central. Think "COPS" mixed with "Police Academy," and sprinkled with "CHiPs," especially some really bad 70s clothes.

Here`s your first look at the big-screen version of "Reno 911."

ANDERSON: Well, they seem to have things under control.

"Reno 911" dials into theaters this February.

HAMMER: Coming up, our friend fitness fanatic Richard Simmons, the guy we`re used to seeing in the short shorts - but wait til you see what he`s wearing tonight. And he`s got a lot to say about Hollywood and body image, in the "SHOWBIZ Weight Watch," coming up next.

ANDERSON: And the deer who broke into the bank. Guess he couldn`t wait to get his - um, dough.

"That`s Ridiculous!," and that`s next.

Plus we`ve got this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARBARA WALTERS, ABC NEWS JOURNALIST: The best thing I have done this past year.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: One-on-one with ABC`s Barbara Walters to find out what the best thing she`s done this year is, and to get her candid thoughts about Katie Couric anchoring the "CBS Evening News." That`s coming up next.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. This is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. Make no mistake about it.

And it`s time now for another story that made us say, "That`s Ridiculous!"

Actually, this story made us say, "Oh Deer."

You see, a deer jumped through the window of a Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh. Apparently, it heard about this open-a-checking-account-get-a- free-toaster-deal, I guess. He ran around inside the bank - maybe even got some dough at the ATM, and then he jumped back out. Maybe he was opening a joint checking account with his Ant-Ler. The deer is OK.

Now one of our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT staffers Alicia (ph), who happens to be from Pittsburgh, says this is not something that happens all the time. But it does bring new meaning to saying, "The buck stops here."

And that`s why we say, a deer dashing through a bank? Now "That`s Ridiculous!"

Well, something certainly not so ridiculous - newswoman Barbara Walters` amazing career. However, if you think that just after being in the business for so long even the best can`t make a few mistakes along the way, you`d be very wrong. And she`d be the first to point it out.

In an ABC special, "Barbara Walters: 30 Mistakes in 30 Years," she takes us down memory lane with some of the goofs and gaffes that she and her guests have made over the years.

I asked Barbara about one of her most infamous interviews - one with Katharine Hepburn, and whether or not she really did ask Kate, "If you could be a tree, what kind of tree would you be?"

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

WALTERS: But you see, I didn`t ask that question that way. I said to Katharine Hepburn, You`re a legend.

She said, "I`m like an old tree." Nobody heard that.

I then said, "Oh really? What kind of a tree?"

And what everybody remembers is that I said to Katharine Hepburn, what kind of a tree are you? Years later, I interviewed her again, and I said, "People were shocked that I asked what kind of a tree you were."

And she said, "You didn`t mean it? I wonder what kind of a tree everybody is."

But I have been labeled with it. So I never ask anybody what kind of a tree. That is mistake number 30.

HAMMER: I - I have to ask you, because you have spoken with Arnold so many times throughout the years.

Going back to the first time you sat right across from him.

WALTERS: Yes.

HAMMER: .could you ever have possibly imagined that this was a man who would be elected and then re-elected.

WALTERS: No.

HAMMER: .to the governorship of California?

WALTERS: No, and Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes himself. He says, women come up to him and say, I really like you for your mind. And he says, Oh yeah? I mean, he makes fun of himself.

HAMMER: I - I`ve had the occasion over the last couple of years to spend some time some good celebratory moments with you guys at "The View."

WALTERS: Yes.

HAMMER: Last time I was with you guys was when Rosie was kicking off her - her run with you.

WALTERS: Yes.

HAMMER: I have to ask you if it has met or just far exceeded your expectations, her - her presence on that show?

WALTERS: Oh, I think it`s energized the show so much. I mean, we were happy with the show the way it was with - this is our 10th year. But Rosie brings a spontaneity. And we never know what she`s going to say.

The - the best thing I have done this past year is to convince Rosie to come on "The View." And she`s made all of us look better.

HAMMER: And you and I have talked about - here we are some 30 years later, Katie Couric solo anchoring an evening newscast. How extraordinary - perhaps maybe it took a little too long - but how great that a woman is finally doing that on her own.

Do you think when people are turning in these days to Katie, or deciding not to tune into to Katie, they do it because it is a woman? Or do you think - are we at the point yet where that doesn`t play into - to somebody`s decision?

WALTERS: I think they tuned in because it was Katie, and because she`s such a good newswoman. I think now each program is somewhat different, and they tune into the personality they like more or less, and to whatever the philosophy of the news program is.

I don`t think people are tuning in to Katie because she is woman, or tuning out because she is a woman. If they tune in, it`s because she`s a superb journalist.

HAMMER: I would hope so.

Well, we`re looking forward to the special.

WALTERS: Thank you.

HAMMER: It`s great fun. And.

WALTERS: Thank you.

HAMMER: And for the record, you didn`t actually ask Katharine Hepburn what kind of tree.

(CROSSTALK)

WALTERS: I did not ask Katharine Hepburn what kind of a tree she was. I will stand by that. It was a big mistake.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HAMMER: It`s too bad that`s been haunting her her whole career.

"Barbara Walters: 30 Mistakes in 30 Years" is going to air tomorrow and on Friday night on ABC.

ANDERSON: It`s now time for the "SHOWBIZ Weight Watch." This is stuff we cover like no other entertainment news show: Hollywood`s obsession with body image.

Tonight, Kate Winslet. She`s setting the record straight about all the tabloid reports that she`s had a weight problem, and lashing out against the super-skinny stars, and the bad message that they`re sending.

Kate tells "InStyle" magazine, "I was very vocal about it, but the truth is, I never really had a weight problem. I certainly went through a time when I didn`t eat enough, and went through another chunk of time when I probably ate too much. It seems to me they`re breeding a whole new generation of anorexics. I look at people and want to say, `Look, it`s really all right. You can eat something.`"

Kate also says she wouldn`t ever get plastic surgery, because - kind of jokingly here - her husband would leave her.

Read more in the December issue of "InStyle," on newsstands Friday.

HAMMER: You know, Kate Winslet`s not the only one who`s up in arms over Hollywood`s pressure with being too thin. Our good friend Richard Simmons is also not too happy with all of this obsession with body image that goes way too far.

Richard, of course, hosts the "Lighten Up With" the Richard - "Lighten Up With Richard Simmons" show, which can be heard on Sirius Satellite Radio.

He`s with us tonight in New York. If you`ve seen him before on this program, you`ve seen the costumes he`s shown up in.

Look at you, Richard.

RICHARD SIMMONS, FITNESS GURU: Hi, A.J.

HAMMER: This doesn`t mean you`re going to be like serious and - and - and, you know - I don`t know, downtrodden.

(CROSSTALK)

SIMMONS: No. Not - not at all.

I`m very upset what`s happening in Hollywood. You know, I have - I have an exercise studio in Beverly Hills, and I have a lot of actresses and young people come there, and I really try to focus in on there not wanting them to look like every little teeny thin model that`s going down the fashion trail to look beautiful in a dress.

I mean, I`ve had a lot of eating disorders in my life. I mean, a lot of guys don`t discuss it. I took laxatives. I threw up. I starved. I went from 268 pounds to 119 pounds and thought I was fat.

The problem is, there`s so much pressure on the kids today and on the teenagers today. And it really is sad, and it`s got to be stopped.

HAMMER: Because you and I are often sitting here having a conversation about obesity in this country.

SIMMONS: Yes.

HAMMER: .and how people need to lose weight. But there really is this whole generation in Hollywood now that is fixated - it`s not just Hollywood, but because of Hollywood - fixated on being too thin.

SIMMONS: You can`t believe how many e-mails and letters I get every single week from girls who want to commit suicide because they don`t look like someone they see on TV.

This has got to stop. People have to know that they`re one of a kind. God only made one of them like that. You have to enjoy what your body looks like, try to exercise, try to eat healthy, and have some self esteem and self respect for your body.

HAMMER: Do you think they made a little headway with this skinny- model ban that we were talking about that happened in Madrid, where they said, You know what? You`re too skinny. Your bones are showing. You can`t walk on our runway.

SIMMONS: But you know what? Every girl wants - most girls would like to look like that.

HAMMER: Why?

SIMMONS: Most girls.

(CROSSTALK)

HAMMER: What`s going on, Richard?

SIMMONS: And they think - you know, too think - if you`re - if - you can`t be too thin or too rich. It`s that same old thing.

And the bottom line is, you can. And - and it`s - it`s very sad that we have to look at others and say, I want to look like that person.

I never felt like that. You know, I always wanted to be the best that I could be.

HAMMER: And then, of course, there`s the standard that Hollywood sets about having that perfect body or looking perfect. And you said you have to feel good inside.

But, you know, the stars that we`re seeing on television, people need to recognize they have trainers, they have dieticians, nutritionists, people following them around everyday saying, Eat this.

(CROSSTALK)

SIMMONS: They spend thousands and thousands of dollars eating, and they spend thousands and thousands of dollars working out.

You`ve got to find balance. You`ve got to find balance. And that`s what I`ve taught for the last 36 years.

HAMMER: And being realistic, which is not the message that Hollywood continues to send.

SIMMONS: Well, you know, again we set these standards so high, and everyone can`t look like all these people. That`s why I basically say, Like you. Like who you are. Like the way you look. And great take care of it.

HAMMER: So Richard, we - we`ve talked about this big problem with obesity in this country. Now we`ve having this new whole dialogue about people who are too thin and really need to get a better sense of themselves.

What can we do about it?

SIMMONS: We can just sit down and make a plan. If we don`t like how much we weigh, become realistic about how to get to the weight you want to get at.

HAMMER: Are the schools doing enough?

SIMMONS: No, and the reason I`m dressed in a suit, A.J., is because I am on my way to Washington. I have put together a questionnaire on my Web site, richardsimmons.com - you can go there, and there is questionnaire that I want every parent, every teacher, every superintendent of every school to fill out. I am going to get PE back in the school system.

I did one show and I got a wonderful phone call from Senator Bill Frist. And he says, There may be a lot of people who will tell you that they will. But I give you my word, you do these questionnaires, you - you attain this knowledge that`s never been attained before about PE, about what schools have it, how long, and I will help you and all my power to get PE, mandatory, back in the school system so that kids can be healthy at a younger age and are not very screwed up as they get older.

If I told you that 5.8 of elementary schools and 8.7 percent of high schools only had PE.

HAMMER: Oh, it`s amazing, because as soon as the budgets get slashed, it`s the first program to go. And particularly as we`re being bombarded with all of these images out of Hollywood, it seems like it`s more essential than ever not to learn just about knowing exactly how to feel - what to eat - how to eat properly and exercise properly, but how to feel good about yourself.

SIMMONS: It`s the attitude. It`s the whole attitude.

And you know what? The kids today - I go to - to schools, elementary schools, high schools that I teach - the kids want to move. They don`t want sports any more, because everyone doesn`t do sports. If everyone will go to richardsimmons.com, the survey, "Ask America," is right there. God bless you and thank you.

HAMMER: Richard, good luck in Washington. And good luck with everyone you`re doing.

SIMMONS: Thank you. Thank you so much.

HAMMER: Don`t forget, tune into Richard every morning on his Sirius satellite radio show, "Lighten Up With Richard Simmons."
