Jail Time Could Turn Into Good Publicity for Paris Hilton; Why Are So Many of Hollywood`s Leading Ladies Unlucky in Love?
Aired May 31, 2007 - 23:00 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
A. J. HAMMER, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: Breaking news, Brad Pitt becomes a dad again! I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.
BROOKE ANDERSON, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: And beautiful stars, big careers, but big flops when it comes to hooking up! Why some celebs are so unlucky in love. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. TV`s most provocative entertainment news show starts right now.
HAMMER: On SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, the shocking Paris Hilton countdown to lockdown. Tonight, for the first time, Nicole Richie speaks out about her "Simple Life" pal`s soon-to-be life behind bars.
The shocking ways Paris is now preparing for jail. And who her cell- mate may be. Plus, the power of Paris. Will she still be a hot money- maker when she gets out? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with the Paris Hilton countdown to lockdown.
Lining up behind Lindsay! Tonight, why Hollywood has been so quick to forgive Lindsay Lohan. The partying, the car crash, the two times in rehab. Are they making her scary problems worse by not coming down harder on her? And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT asks the controversial question: will rehab actually work this time for Lindsay?
Hello, I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.
ANDERSON: Hi there everyone. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. And you know, A.J., when I hear of so-and-so star in rehab, so-and-so star with a DUI arrest, I ask myself, where is the line drawn between Hollywood helping the stars who are in trouble and also enabling the stars` bad behavior? And We get into that coming up.
HAMMER: That is an excellent point. And one of those stars behaving badly is Paris Hilton, of course. The countdown to lockdown here at SHOWBIZ TONIGHT headquarters now set at five days. Officials at the LA county jail say they are ready for heiress Paris. She does need to turn herself over to authorities no later than June 5th.
ANDERSON: That`s right A.J., and it gets closer. Friends and family say they are worried sick about poor Paris. They say she`s anxious and scared, that she`s so upset about the possibility of doing time that she can`t even eat!
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ANDERSON (voice-over): Five days and counting until paparazzi princess Paris Hilton starts her days behind bars. And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you, as D Day draws near, little miss Paris is stressed out and scared.
GILLIAN SHELDON, SUPERVISING PRODUCER TMZ.COM: I think she is extremely nervous about the unknown. I highly doubt that she`s ever been anywhere where the sheets have been less than a 1,000 dollar thread count.
MARK ARMSTRONG, NEWS DIRECTOR, PEOPLE.COM: This has been a tough time for Paris Hilton. A source told "People" this week that her friends and family are worried about her. She`s been breaking down crying. She hasn`t been eating and she`s generally distressed about the entire situation.
ANDERSON: Distressed but not distressed enough to shun the cameras. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT obtained this picture, Paris engaging in some retail therapy and adding a few more titles to her ever expanding spiritual library.
Check that out, "The Spiritual Warrior." Sounds serious.
JOHN HENSON, TV GUIDE CHANNEL: "The Spiritual Warrior," I think unless there`s a chapter in there on sharpening your toothbrush into a shank, she might be out of luck.
ANDERSON: SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you that Paris` spirituality has become so strong that the heiress has even been attending church in Los Angeles and participating in, get this, a youth group. Wow. What an angel.
HENSON: I think there`s probably just as good a chance of Paris Hilton coming out of jail with a teardrop tattooed on her face as there is coming out an angel.
ANDERSON: Hilton has until June 5th to turn herself in to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynnwood, California. A police spokesperson confirms to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that once in the clink, Paris will be separated from the general inmate population and placed in a celebrity cell. Officials at the jail say it`s for her own safety.
SHELDON: Obviously she`s very high profile, so inmates there at the jail will know exactly who she is, exactly when she shows up. And I can`t imagine that they are going to be very nice.
ANDERSON: And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can break the news for you that Paris actually doesn`t have a cell mate yet. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT getting to the truth. We spoke with officials at the L.A. County Jail, and they tell us they are ready for her, but have not yet chosen anyone to share her space.
Meanwhile, Nicole Richie, Paris`s on again, off again best friend, is opening up about Paris just in time to plug the new season of the "Simple Life." Nicole was a guest on Ryan Seacrest`s Kiss FM radio show in Los Angeles and told him that Paris is anxious about doing time behind bars.
RYAN SEACREST, KISS FM RADIO: Is she nervous?
NICOLE RICHIE, "THE SIMPLE LIFE": Wouldn`t you be?
SEACREST: I`d be scared.
RICHIE: Me too.
SEACREST: I`d be really scared. Is she scared?
RICHIE: Of course she is.
SEACREST: What`s she afraid of? I`d be afraid they were going to beat me up.
RICHIE: Anything.
SEACREST: Strip-search.
RICHIE: Yes.
SEACREST: I`m serious.
ANDERSON: Paris isn`t the only one scared these days. Nicole says she too is frightened about the possibility of doing time. Richie was arrested and booked for DUI last December after police found her driving the wrong way on an L.A. freeway. Richie later fessed up to smoking pot and popping Vicodin before getting behind the wheel.
A judge will soon decide if she should go to the slammer too.
RICHIE: I`m nervous, but I understand that I have to, you know, deal with whatever consequences come my way, and I have to take responsibility for anything.
ANDERSON: That a girl, Nicole. If only Paris had done that from the beginning. We are thinking if SHIELDS: e had, Whoopie Goldberg wouldn`t have been so ticked off while guest hosting "The View" today.
WHOOPIE GOLDBERG, COMEDIAN: This is a girl who had the opportunity to avoid all of this. She could have avoided this if she had just taken care of business as she was supposed to. She thumbed her nose, not once but twice. And they said, you know what? The only way you are going to get that this is serious is when you start smelling what this is like. It`s not cute. Maybe she will be able to turn other girls from following that path.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
ANDERSON: Nicole Richie also told Ryan Seacrest that she thinks there was nothing Paris could have done. She thinks Paris was treated unfairly by the courts and was exploited. So, I want to know, could jail time for Paris actually make her a hotter star, worth more money? That`s coming up at 31 past the hour.
HAMMER: A frightening thought indeed. Now another young Hollywood star right in the middle of a meltdown. Rehab isn`t holding Lindsay Lohan`s career up at all. Her second go-around in rehab is cutting into the production schedule of the upcoming film, "Poor Things." But SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you producers of the film, Shirley Maclaine and Rob Hickmanm, are willing to work around Lohan.
I want to read to you what they told us. They say, quote, "in the spirit of helping Lindsay Lohan and her rehabilitation, we have been asked by Lindsay to comply with her wishes to continue working on "Poor Things." We are trying to rearrange the shooting schedule to coincide with the completion of her rehabilitation. We wish her love and the blending of mind, body and spirit."
Well, isn`t that nice. But SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has just got to ask, is Hollywood just too forgiving? Joining me tonight from Hollywood, "People Magazine" west coast editor Mike Fleeman, also in Hollywood, founder of 15 minutes public relations, Howard Bragman.
Mike, Howard, it`s good to have you both here. Lindsay Lohan, as we all know, has a history now, a small history, but certainly a history, of holding up productions. Of course, "Georgia Rule," which happened to flop, and she showed up late to the set after big time late night partying. And she was very publicly chided for that.
Now, "Poor Things" is cutting her a big break. Mike, we`re all for supporting someone who`s sick, who is perhaps an alcoholic in need of some kind of recovery, but in the case of Lindsay here, aren`t they really enabling her behavior?
MIKE FLEEMAN, "PEOPLE MAGAZINE": Well, you have to read between the lines of that "Poor Things" statement, like so many things in Hollywood. And this is not a blanket endorsement and support of Lindsay Lohan. Read it carefully. We are complying with her wishes. We are going to do the best we can, but they have left a lot of wiggle room to still fire her from this movie.
This was as much a warning to Lindsey, as it was a boost of support.
HAMMER: Because I imagine they sort of have to watch what they say. Right Mike?
FLEEMAN: There are probably contractual issues involved here. They have hired the woman. They have signed papers. At the same time, they, like the "Georgia Rule" producers, have to worry about their production schedule. so this isn`t 110 percent in favor of Lindsay, and total support. It`s more of a warning.
HAMMER: Yes, and I just keep coming back to the word enabling here. Howard, you`ve always said right here on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT Hollywood loves to give second chances. But this is more than a second chance for Lindsay?
HOWARD BRAGMAN, 15 MINUTES PUBLIC RELATIONS: She`s had more chances than Morris the cat. But understand, A.J., we are giving her a chance, not a career. And the real issue is what`s she going to do with this opportunity. I`ve always found you can fall into a hole really deep, really quickly in Hollywood. But this is going to take years for her to climb out of the hole and really get her reputation back.
The question is not where Lindsay is in 30 days or 60 days, where is she going to be in five years? What kind of a person or career is she going to have? And is she going to be viable? And that`s totally in her hands.
HAMMER: Because, again, if the movie studios continue to employ her with the type of behavior she exhibits, and I`m talking again outside of any sickness she may have, it`s really only going to set a bad example, if you ask me. I want you guys to take a look at PSA that SHOWBIZ TONIGHT obtained.
Lindsay taped this thing a couple of years ago. The shocker here, it`s an anti-drunk driving campaign. Watch this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hey, what`s up. I`m Jeff.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I`m Chuck.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And I`m (INAUDIBLE)
LINDSAY LOHAN, ACTRESS: I`m Lindsay Lohan.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Telling you, please don`t drink and drive.
LOHAN: Be safe.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: You`ve been covering Hollywood for a long time. There has been plenty of forgiveness along the line for stars in the past. But when can we expect Lindsay`s forgiveness to run out at this point?
FLEEMAN: Well it`s going to run out when she starts costing people money. Hollywood is very forgiving of all sorts of very bad behavior as long as you keep the machinery of Hollywood moving, as long as you can keep making money. That was her sin with "Georgia Rules." She showed up late. She kept the cast and crew waiting. It cost money.
And if she is seen as a financial risk or a detriment, then the forgiveness runs out.
HAMMER: Yes, it all comes down to the dollar signs. It`s funny how the world goes around, particularly out there in La La Land. Howard, you certainly, as a major PR guru, have helped some big Hollywood stars bounce back from some big trouble. We`ve seen some other stars along the way. Kate Moss is one that comes to mind, who actually made more money after her drug scandal than before. And I`m talking tens of millions of dollars.
Does that not just perpetuate the idea that some stars can do whatever the heck they want and still be rewarded with even more success.
BRAGMAN: First of all, Kate had a really good career before she got in trouble and she had a history of decades of clean living. I don`t know if clean living is the right term. But being professional, showing up. But as Mike said, it`s all about money. If somebody can make money off Kate Moss, they are going to make money off Kate Moss or Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton.
This is show business. It`s not show altruism and they are economic decisions. And if she`s going to show up, she`s going to get them the attention, then she`ll be the spokesperson.
HAMMER: It will be interesting to see in the case of Lindsay if, with this new movie production, it does move forward with her still on that call sheet in the morning.
Mike Fleeman of "People Magazine," Howard Bragman of 15 Minutes PR, I thank you both.
Now coming up at thirty-six after the hour, we`ve got your first look at the film Lindsay finished before going into rehab. It`s called "I Know Who Killed Me."
And now we would like to hear from you for our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day. Here is what we`re asking tonight: Lindsay`s second stint in rehab; Will it work this time? You can vote at CNN.com/SHOWBIZTONIGHT. E-mail us, SHOWBIZTONIGHT@CNN.com.
ANDERSON: OK, so it was one of the most talked about, stunning stories when Kevin Federline dumped his pregnant girlfriend, Shar Jackson, for Britney Spears. Next, I`ll go one on one Shar. And you`re not going to believe the surprising thins she has to say about K-Fed and Britney.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Watching Britney and Kevin Federline was like watching a horror movie going, don`t go downstairs. Don`t go into the basement. And she just kept walking down. We just put our hands over our eyes, yelling no. She did it.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Big stars, big romance problems. I just don`t get it. Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston; they are successful. They are gorgeous. So why are their love lives such a big mess? I`ve got that special report, stars unlucky in love, straight ahead.
HAMMER: And I`m so excited about this big news about Jennifer Aniston`s ex Brad Pitt. He`s a daddy again. We are all very excited here at SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. A little bit of a twist to this story. I`ve got those late breaking details coming up next on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT for Thursday night. This is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York. Big Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie news tonight. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you, Brad Pitt is officially a dad again!
Now I think I can explain exactly what I`m talking about here. Pitt, the name, was legally added to Pax Tien Jolie`s last name in a Los Angeles court today. You remember, Brad`s girlfriend Angelina Jolie adopted three- year-old Pax from a Vietnamese orphanage earlier this year. The couple has two other adopted kids, Zahara and Maddox. Angelina gave birth to their own daughter Shiloh last May.
ANDERSON: Speaking of Brad Pitt, you know, when he and Jennifer Aniston split, there was all kinds of nasty talk that he met Angelina while he and Jen were still together. That story really hits home for Shar Jackson. Kevin Federline dumped Shar, who was pregnant with their second child, for Britney Spears. Not-so-coincidentally, Shar`s starring in a new ABC reality show called "Ex-Wives Club."
I was really surprised how much Shar opened up to me about K-Fed and get this, even though you`re not going to see Shar and Britney getting together for tea anytime soon, it`s not exactly World War III between them either!
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ANDERSON: You know, it`s no secret that your ex, Kevin Federline, and Britney Spears were a tabloid target. How did you get a break from the barrage of the headlines, from all the constant stories?
SHAR JACKSON, "EX WIVES CLUB": I mean, honestly, I did a lot of staying at home, you know, staying behind the orange curtains. I live in Orange County, so that`s what I call it. I just really had to distance myself from it. I took a break from my work so that I can focus on my family, focus on my kids, and keep my mind on the right things.
ANDERSON: But did that make you upset, that because of the tabloid attention, you had to turn your life upside down really, take a break from work?
JACKSON: I think I got upset for a minute, but I figured obviously this is God`s way of telling me spend some more time with the kids. I don`t have a problem with that.
ANDERSON: So you seem very mature about the whole experience and I`m sure it was incredibly difficult for you. And, you know, do you think that people nowadays -- you`ve gotten to know her and them. Do you think they have her all wrong?
JACKSON: Honestly, I don`t know her that well. I know her enough that when she was around everything, you know hey, how are you doing? I kept everything very nice. She was a nice girl when I did spend time with her/ But we didn`t go out for tea or anything.
I mean, there`s only so much. I`m human too, so there is only so much that you really want to put yourself -- a position you want to put yourself in. We are really nice to each other when we do see each other, and that`s fine. That`s pretty much -- We don`t need to be BFFs and go get bracelets or anything like that. We`re good and that was even before the kids. We were just, you know, so --
ANDERSON: You`re so funny, by the way. And speaking of being friends, you and Kevin seem to be friends. You helped celebrate his birthday. Are you there to support him as he`s going through another difficult time?
JACKSON: Before we were romantically linked, we were friends, and luckily we have that foundation and we`re going to be friends forever. I love that guy. At the end of the day, I love him. He`s one of my best friends in the world. OK, our relationship didn`t work out. Obviously that`s not where we were supposed to be. But we are still in each other`s lives and we`re still the best of friends.
If he needs to talk to me about something, call me, I`ll listen for a minute and then, you know --
ANDERSON: A minute, if you`ve got the time.
JACKSON: If I`ve got a little time on my hands.
ANDERSON: Is he a good father?
JACKSON: He`s an amazing father.
ANDERSON: And is that important as an ex, as you`re helping these other people, to keep them in your life and to have that friendly relationship?
JACKSON: Definitely. Definitely. And Kevin is such an amazing dad. Honestly, that`s one of the reasons I fell in love with him. He came into my life and took on the father role. Even before Corey and Caleb were thought of, I had two that were already there. And he came in and loved them like they were his own.
ANDERSON: Interestingly, throughout this whole experience, you have seen the tabloids, I`m sure, really give Kevin a bum rap. Do you think it`s a bum ram?
JACKSON: Definitely, the tabloids, the people that write the tabloids really don`t know us. Nine times out of ten their sources don`t know us either. So they are going to make up what sells.
ANDERSON: Because they sell he was with Britney for her fortune, that he was using her, that he isn`t a good dad. Those sorts of really mean things.
JACKSON: My kids disagree. Just to prove how wrong those things are, I read the other day that I`m pregnant. I just had a tummy tuck, so I`m going to go ahead and ruin that right now, go ahead and be pregnant. It`s stupid and it is what it is, and they are going to write what sells. It`s entertainment. Always remember, it`s entertainment.
ANDERSON: People have called K-Fed -- people have called Kevin a loser. What do you say to that?
JACKSON: I think he will change everybody`s mind once they give him a chance.
ANDERSON: You hope they will give him a chance?
JACKSON: He`s going to make you give him a chance. He`s not a quitter at all.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: You can catch Shar Jackson in the new reality show "Ex- Wives` Club" Monday nights on ABC.
HAMMER: You hear that sound? That is the clock ticking down on what`s left of Paris Hilton`s freedom. Sorry, Paris, not even tinker bell can save you now. That`s her dog. Wait a second, could this whole jail thing actually make Paris a hotter star? I investigate the cash power of Paris at 31 past the hour.
ANDERSON: Up next, the new "American Idol," Jordan Sparks, speaking out about how the show helped her with her body image. Also this --
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Drew Berrymore, I bet you nine times out of ten, has to dumb it down for her dates.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Celebrities who are unlucky in love coming up next.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
ANDERSON: Time now for the SHOWBIZ Weight Watch. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT covers Hollywood`s obsession with body image like no other entertainment news show. So not only did winning "American Idol" make Jordan Sparks` dreams come true, it also really helped her self-esteem about her figure. Jordan, who was five foot 10 and a size 12 by the time she hit junior high, tells "People Magazine" that while she wanted to be tiny when she was younger, she`s totally comfortable with her curves now.
"Before the show I liked to wear sleeves because they would cover up my arms. These days I`m really comfortable in my own skin. I learned that I`m never ever going to be a size two. I would look so weird as a size two. Somebody would blow and I would fall right over. It just wouldn`t be healthy."
You know, Jordan is only 17, but what a mature positive message for girls and adults, right.
By the way, growing up, Jordan always said her family always told her how beautiful she was and she even landed a plus size modeling gig right before trying out for Idol.
HAMMER: And obviously "American Idol" a force to be reckoned with. And whether you love or hate her -- I`m not going to make my specific judgment here -- you should never underestimate the power of Paris Hilton. Could going to jail actually make her a more valuable store? I`m investigating the power of Paris, next.
ANDERSON: Also, a lot of people have been talking about rescuing Lindsay Lohan from herself. Well, next I`ve got your first look at her startling new movie where she actually is rescued. You`re not going to believe this movie. Also this --
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Watching Britney and Kevin Federline was like watching a horror movie going, going, don`t go downstairs, don`t go into the basement. And she just kept walking down. We put our hands over our eyes. We`re like no. And she did it.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Big stars, big romance problems. I just don`t get it. Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston; they are successful. They are gorgeous. So why are their love lives such a big mess? I`ve got that special report, stars unlucky in love, coming up next.
(NEWS BREAK)
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. It`s 30 minutes past the hour. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.
ANDERSON: And I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. This is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show.
HAMMER: Still to come tonight, Brooke, we may not be seeing Lindsay Lohan out and about for a while, now that she`s in rehab, but you know, we are still going to get the chance to see her on the big screen. Because before she went into rehab, she had a chance to finished up her work on a new movie called "I Know Who Killed Me." It`s a thriller.
Lindsay plays a stripper. And I have to say, Brooke, looks like a pretty good movie! We have that coming up in the SHOWBIZ first look.
ANDERSON: Let`s hope it`s good, A.J. Her last few films, not so much.
HAMMER: Not so good.
ANDERSON: Also, A.J., I have always wondered why some of Hollywood`s most beautiful, richest, most successful women just can`t seem to find lasting love.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
STEVE SANTAGATI, AUTHOR, "THE MANUAL": Drew Barrymore, I bet you, nine times out of 10 has to dumb it down for her dates.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: OK. That could be the explanation in Drew`s case, but she`s certainly not alone in the lonely hearts club. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT investigates stars who are unlucky in love, coming up.
But first, the power of Paris. The Paris Hilton countdown to lockdown continues tonight. The heiress will be slammer-bound within the next five days, but SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you, that Paris, who of course is in line for the billion-dollar Hilton hotel fortune, has made millions of dollars as an industry unto herself. And for better or worse, you put her in the pages of your magazine, you watch your circulation jump.
But the question is, can it all last for this convicted criminal? Will jail time hurt or perhaps help the power of Paris?
Boy, we`ve got into this now. And with me now, branding expert Linda Kaplan Thaler, CEO of the Kaplan Thaler Group and David Caplan, senior correspondent from VH1.
Linda, David, I`m almost afraid of what your answers to my questions are going to be tonight. That`s how I feel about Paris Hilton, as many people well know. You would think that getting thrown in jail would bring things to a screeching halt for the cottage industry that is now Paris Hilton.
David, I want you to give me a reality check here. You`re probably going to make me mad as hell with your answer, but is she going to be bigger than ever?
DAVID CAPLAN, SENIOR CORRESPONDENT, VH1: She will. I hate to disappoint you, A.J., but it`s Paris Hilton. Believe it or not, her lifestyle is aspirational for so many people around the world. They see Paris Hilton on fragrance, you know, Paris Hilton nightclubs, they love it. Post-prison she will still be bigger than ever.
HAMMER: David, we bring you on the program because you know what you`re talking about. But I want to go to an expert from the field of branding. That would be Linda Kaplan Thaler. No relation here.
Linda, you certainly have seen the mighty fall. Lots of celebs have lost endorsement and power because of scandal. What`s your take on what`s going to wind up happening with Miss Hilton.
LINDA KAPLAN THALER, CEO, KAPLAN THALER GROUP: You know, she could really turn it around and create an even bigger bang about her brand. Her brand, Paris, by actually doing some good.
You know, maybe even working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. What an opportunity to send a message now that would send people reeling. And to really take a left turn. And you know I`m not just a marketer. I`m also a mom. The great thing is that the power -- we saw this with Don Imus -- the power is really in the brands themselves and what they decide to do.
If they decide they don`t want you, you`re out. I think what`s happened with Paris is I know a lot of my client are women now. These clients are putting their foot down going you know what, I don`t want this person representing my brand. It would be very interesting to see how it turns around in the one or two days that she actually ends up in prison.
HAMMER: Yes, but the brand, of course, Linda, that she has established with her not exactly squeaky clean. We had the sex tape. We had the racist comments caught on tape. Not to mention her numbing her nose at the law through this whole arrest situation.
Yet, all of this seems to work for her, David. So what I`m wondering -- and again, I hate to even ask the question knowing what you`re probably going to answer -- is she smarter than the average heir?
CAPLAN: She is. I hate to say it. I interviewed her. And I`ve met her before. She`s not as dumb as you think. With her it`s a bit of an act, because she knows the sort of dumb blonde, oh, what, who me, act that works for her. She is not a stupid as you think and she really is a branding mastermind and she knows how to use her name, and exploit her name, to her own advantage.
HAMMER: "That`s hot. That`s hot."
(LAUGHTER)
I want to read off some statistics. Get a load of this. In 2004 Paris Hilton launched her perfume, Paris Hilton. She made so much money, she launched a whole bunch more fragrances, a men`s line among them. Clubs reportedly pay this woman hundreds of thousands of dollars just to show up for a few measly minutes. Back in `06 she released that first album "Paris." It spawned a surprisingly successful single, "Stars Are Blind".
Linda, I get that there is this fascination with Paris Hilton, but why in the world would anybody -- knowing what she`s all about -- buy anything, or buy into anything, whether it`s the TV show, "The Simple Life," her perfume, going to clubs because her name is attached.
THALER: Because, you know, that`s where the culture is. We celebrate people who do bad things. You are only as good as the last bad thing you have done. But I think Imus turned a corner. I think what you are seeing in the millennials, the young people who follow two generations after me, is that there is more of a spirit of do-goodism in this country. I feel with our book "The Power of Nice" we are really showing that there is a movement now to say, you know what, mean is so last millennium. And I think the tide is turning. I feel it`s people like us, that need to make the tide turn. It`s not going to happen alone.
HAMMER: I agree with that. And to your point, Paris making this career off of people not taking her seriously. And you`re suggesting that maybe if she turns things around and has this "do-goodism", as you use that word, when she comes out of jail, you know, she would be become a reformed party girl.
David, will people take her seriously, and give her the same career she`s had or will it be a career ending move for her?
CAPLAN: Absolutely not. I don`t think people will take her seriously as a reformed bad girl. The reason people like her is because of the lifestyle she has now. Like is said she`s aspirational. She`s naughty. That`s why people like it. People like a Paris Hilton themed night club. People like a sexy Paris Hilton fragrance. That is why people like her. So a reformed Paris Hilton, al a Angelina Jolie, I don`t think that will work.
HAMMER: Yeah. All right.
THALER: I don`t -- what -- you can`t be sexy and nice at the same time? I disagree.
HAMMER: Oh, I think you can. I think you can, Linda. I don`t think Paris Hilton is the person to do it, personally. David I think disagrees. We are out of time anyway. But I do like the word "do-goodism" -- I can`t say it, but I like it.
Linda Kaplan Thaler from the Kaplan Thaler Group.
THAILER: Thank you.
HAMMER: David Caplan, from VH1. I thank you both.
ANDERSON: Before Lindsay Lohan checked herself into rehab, she finished work on a movie called, "I Know Who Killed Me." The young starlet plays a troubled stripper who is rescued after being abducted and tortured by a serial killer. And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has your first look.
(BEGIN MOVIE CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She knew how to turn her life into a movie and watch things happen. Not to her, but to a girl who looked just like her. How would she ever find her other half? She knew only that she had to try. She had no choice.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Aubrey, you talk about it like she`s real. It`s a stupid assignment for class.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Aubrey, wait!
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I`ll meet you in front of the Freemont at 11:45.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Aubrey!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Where`s Aubrey?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Mr. Fleming, is there any chance that your daughter might have run away? Was she unhappy about anything?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, not at all.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hey, are you OK?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my god. Oh, my god.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yeah?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Is she alive? How bad?
Sure did miss you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We`re going to have you home in no time.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Who are you?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It`s Aubrey. I know I may look a little like this Aubrey chick, but I`m not her.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Then what should I call you?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My real name would be nice.
So you must be Aubrey`s boyfriend.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sometimes people create alter egos to relay information that their primary personalities would never reveal.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Remember things, to make you feel more at home.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Who gave you this?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Why are you doing this?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I can`t really explain.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think I`m Aubrey`s twin sister.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You see. You`re all by yourself in there. No twin sister.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Once he finds out you`re still alive, he`s going to come after you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I feel like he`s been watching us right now.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He`s not done with Aubrey Fleming, not by a long shot.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Stop playing games. We have to know the truth.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She looks just like her, but it ain`t Aubrey.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She`s living inside a world she made up.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You`d let both of us die just to keep your secret?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You should be dead by now.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I know who killed me.

ANDERSON: "I know who killed me" opens in theaters July 27th, if you want to check it out.
OK, we`ve been asking to you vote on our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day. Lindsey`s second stint in rehab: Will it work this time? Keep voting cnn.com/showbiztonight write to us, showbiztonight@cnn.com.
We are going to read some of your thoughts tomorrow. You can also vote on the question of the day by sending a text to 45688. To vote yes, write showbiz yes. To vote no, showbiz no. Once again, that text is 45688.
HAMMER: There is some major criticism of Lindsay and Britney Spears tonight. And this is coming from someone who has actually gone through addiction and thinks that young stars are not taking rehab seriously. I have to tell you, I think this person, right on the money. I`m going to tell you who it is, what she`s saying, coming up.
ANDERSON: Great questions that she raises, A.J.
Also, Jessica Alba going off on the paparazzi and the people in charge in Hollywood. She`s got some really strong opinions about those. What I was most surprised by what Jessica is saying about her looks, it`s really incredible. That is still ahead.
Also this:
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
SANTAGATI: Watching Britney and Kevin Federline was like watching a horror movie, going don`t go downstairs, don`t go into the basement. She just kept walking down, we just put our hands over our eyes, like, no! And she did it.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Why? Oh why, is Britney Spears so unlucky in love? I`m not sure if that ol` K-Fed thing was just bad luck, or really just a bad choice. But you know there are tons of beautiful, successful stars who just can`t seem to find true love. Stars who are unlucky in love. That`s coming up next on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
ANDERSON: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. I`m Brooke Anderson.
I gotta tell you, I don`t know a single girl out there not looking for that special someone, hoping maybe -- just maybe -- this next guy might be the right guy. The same goes for some of our favorite leading ladies, unfortunately for them their make ups, and break ups, are front page news. Some may say they are picking the wrong men. Others may call it unlucky in love.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
SANTAGATI: Watching Britney and Kevin Federline was like watching a horror movie.
JILL DOBSON, "STAR": Cameron Diaz has had a lot of high-profile relationships.
SANTAGATI: Drew Barrymore, I bet you, nine times out of 10 has to dumb it down for her dates.
DOBSON: Denise Richards went for the ultimate Hollywood bad boy.
ANDERSON: Hold up! Can it be? Are some of Hollywood`s most beautiful and talented leading ladies unlucky in the love department? It seems that way because the lists of exs are getting longer and the relationships are getting shorter. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT did some digging with "The Manual" author, Steve Santagati and "Star" magazine`s Jill Dobson to find out who is being cast in the role of "unlucky in love", starting with Miss Britney Spears.
SANTAGATI: Justin was the best guy she ever had.
ANDERSON: Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears ended their romance back in 2002.
DOBSON: A lot of people are mourning that relationship because it seemed like those two were so perfect for each other.
ANDERSON: Britney then went from Mr. Perfect to Mr. Not-So-Perfect. Starting with her 55 hour marriage to high school best friend, Jason Alexander. Next in line for bright-eyed Britney, back up dancer, Kevin Federline. We all know how that ended.
SANTAGATI: Watching Britney and Kevin Federline was like watching a horror movie going don`t go downstairs, don`t go into the basement. And she kept walking down, we just put our hands over our eyes, like -- no! And she did it.
ANDERSON: So, who should Britney be looking to for that perfect match?
SANTAGATI: A regular, strong rugged guy with Kid Rock naughtiness but with more of a Bill Gates financial and emotional stability.
ANDERSON: While Justin Timberlake was Britney`s first, he is the latest victim of our next Hollywood heartbreaker, Miss Cameron Diaz.
DOBSON: Cameron Diaz has had a lot of high profile relationships, with Jerrod Lido (ph), Matt Dillon, and Justin Timberlake. None of those have worked out, but Cameron always bounces back.
SANTAGATI: I don`t think Cameron is looking for that man to get married and have children right now. I think that she`s looking just to have fun and I just think it`s a little bit odd that all the guys she picks have a shelf life. There`s usually not a lot of turmoil in the press about her relationships. They usually begin, kiss, kiss, kiss, shots on the beach, and they end.
ANDERSON: SHOWBIZ TONIGHT hopes our next unlucky in love listener can find the right man. She`s America`s friend.
JENNIFER ANISTON, "FRIENDS": Oh, I can`t believe he remembered.
ANDERSON: Miss Jennifer Aniston.
DOBSON: Jennifer Aniston is the woman we are all rooting for. Our hearts broke for her when her marriage to Brad ended. We were all happy when she ended up with funny guy Vince Vaughn. She`s dated other actors along the way, like Pete Donavon (ph).
SANTAGATI: Jennifer Aniston is a beautiful woman. She`s successful. She`s wealthy. And she`s picking bad boys. No big deal, except if you`re going to play with the big leagues, you`ve got to know how to handle these guys -- and she just doesn`t.
ANDERSON: Another lady not having luck with the bad boys, Miss Denise Richards.
SANTAGATI: I think that Denise Richards thinks that her looks and her attitude are going to be enough to keep a guy around -- a bad boy around, actually -- and it`s not.
DOBSON: Denise Richards went for the ultimate Hollywood bad boy, and then she went from the bad boy to looking like the bad girl, when she divorced Charlie and ended up with the man who had recently divorced her best friend.
ANDERSON: She had "Never Been Kissed" before she had "50 First Dates".
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And do you think that I should bring him into the other room and take advantage of him?
ANDERSON: In real life, Drew Barrymore`s list of love interests comes from all walks of life.
DOBSON: She was famously married to Tom Green for a couple of years. That didn`t work out. Since then she`s been linked to several other semi- famous guys, but none of them have been as famous as her. And I think that may be part of why it didn`t work out.
SANTAGATI: Drew Barrymore, I bet you nine times out of 10 has to dumb it down for her dates. I think it`s going to be hard to find a guy that can basically keep up with her on a physical level, intellectual level, and a fun level.
ANDERSON: Speaking of the whole package, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has one more lady who has it all, minus Mr. Right, the new proud mama, Miss Sheryl Crow.
DOBSON: Sheryl Crow doesn`t seem to have a type. She`s dated a musician, actor, an athlete, but none of them turned out to be the perfect guy for her.
SANTAGATI: These are guys that don`t have to settle down. These are guys that don`t have to have a wife, or a steady girlfriend. They can have whoever they want, and they will because they are celebrities.
ANDERSON: Celebrities dating celebrities. A trend SHOWBIZ TONIGHT immediately picked up on when we got to listing our unlucky in love ladies. So should a new direction be taken?
SANTAGATI: They have to find a guy outside of Hollywood that doesn`t care that they are famous.
DOBSON: Date America`s most successful accountant. He`s proud of what he does. You`re proud of what you do. You`re both successful, but in different fields. You can be a power couple without having to be a Hollywood`s "it" couple.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
ANDERSON: And listen to this, Sheryl Crow might have heard our advice. She just told "OK" magazine that she is dating someone special; someone who isn`t in show business. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT hopes Sheryl, her new baby, Wyatt, and this new someone very special will be very happy together.
HAMMER: Tonight, scathing criticism of Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and the way that they, and other stars, have treated rehab. Patti Davis, daughter of Ronald and Nancy Reagan, has a blistering column on "Newsweek`s" website that is really tearing into the celebrity rehab culture.
Davis has struggled with addiction herself. She became addicted to speed at 15 and then she quit in her 20s, on her own, she says, just like she started. It was the 1970s and Davis says that she wishes she could have gone to a facility just like the ones that Britney and Lindsay have gone to.
Davis says that rehab has become the ultimate publicity tool. A brief break from the glitzy life and that we have forgotten it`s supposed to be taken seriously as a lifesaving way to get better.
She writes, quote, "It makes me angry when I see how the opportunity of being in rehab can be abused as nothing more than a slick PR move, a brief retreat from the paparazzi. I struggled for years to learn, on my own, what someone like Lohan could learn in months if she were willing to do so."
ANDERSON: Jessica Alba has some strong opinions, herself, tonight. She is really going off on the paparazzi and the people who are in charge in Hollywood. She has some very biting words about both of those things. But wait until you hear about what Jessica is saying about her own looks. Trust me, it`s going to make you groan. We`ve got that, coming up next.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
ANDERSON: Jessica Alba is going off on the paparazzi and the people in charge in Hollywood. Jessica is reprising her role as the Invisible Woman in this summer`s "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer." And she says she wishes she could be a little more invisible in real life.
Jessica tells "Parade" magazine that the only time she wants to be in the newspapers is when she is promoting a movie. In fact, she says she thinks the paparazzi are so lame, she can`t even believe it`s a real job!
But what really bothers Jessica is the state of Hollywood and who`s in charge. Listen to this, she says, quote, "I`m in a business that`s completely driven by white males. The majority of the writers and directors are men. The woman`s voice really isn`t present in Hollywood."
Jessica says she`d like to change that by producing movies of her own that are empowering to women. One more thing, and this might be hard to believe, Jessica says she doesn`t buy that she`s a sex symbol. She says most days she looks in the mirror and doesn`t think she looks all that great.
OK, whatever, Jessica.
For more with the not-so-great-looking, paparazzi-hating Jessica Alba check out "Parade" magazine, in newspapers throughout the country this weekend. And "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" is in theaters June 15th.
HAMMER: Well, yesterday we asked you to vote on our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day. Here`s what we were asking, Lindsay Lohan in rehab, are the clubs partly to blame? Look at these results, 31 percent of you say yes; so 69 percent of you not putting the blame on the clubs. Here`s what we heard from you in some of the e-mails.
Laure from Wisconsin writes: "I guess if you`re a big shot they just let you in and give whatever you want to drink until someone gets hurt of killed."
We also heard from Shelli in California, who writes: "She is an adult and can make her own decisions on what is right. When do we start holding these people accountable?"
Tomorrow is Friday night. Let`s find out what is coming up on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.
And tomorrow, the clock continues to tick. Paris Hilton just a handful of nights of freedom before she goes to jail. We`ve got a little advice for her on how to handle it. Is she going to get special treatment there? Will the other inmates be star struck? Advice for Paris` jail days, coming tomorrow on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.
Also tomorrow, happy Hollywood marriages. Is the secret for stars like Meryl Streep and Archer Cross and Julia Roberts, marrying someone who isn`t famous? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is taking a look at when A-listers make it work with people who, well, quite frankly aren`t even on the list. That`s coming up tomorrow.
And that is it for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. Thanks a lot for watching. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.
ANDERSON: Have a great night everyone. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. "Glenn Beck is coming up next, right after the latest headlines from CNN "Headline News". Keep it right here.
