Aired July 24, 2007 - 23:00 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
BROOKE ANDERSON, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: A country star`s shocking fight with her mom. I`ve got the frightening 911 call. And how surfing could help Paris Hilton turn her life around. I`m Brooke Anderson in New York. TV`s most provocative entertainment news show starts right now.
On SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, a Lindsay Lohan just out of rehab shocker. She`s been arrested for DUI again. Tonight, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with the startling details.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: While in the jail, officers found in her possession a small amount of cocaine.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: And the tough questions, like what the heck happened with that alcohol monitoring bracelet she was wearing? And is her career now over for good? And how about this, should we actually feel sorry for her? It is a provocative SHOWBIZ special report, Lindsay busted again.
Did Britney Spears have a meltdown caught on camera? Tonight, the almost unbelievable story of what just happened at a photo shoot with a major magazine. And why the magazine is going to show and tell all, including why Britney cleaned up dog poop with her expensive dress. Tonight, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with the disturbing side of Britney the whole world is about to see.
Hi there everyone. I`m Brooke Anderson in New York. A.J. Hammer is off tonight. Right now, I can not even imagine what is going through Lindsay Lohan`s head. But I hope it is something along the lines of a wakeup call unlike she`s -- unlike any she has ever had. Because fresh out of rehab, with a previous DUI arrest, Lindsay has been busted again. Get a load of this mug shot. Lindsay right after the cops hauled her to the police station.
But wait, it gets worse, a lot worse. Police say not only was she drunk, but that she had cocaine on her. Tonight, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has extensive coverage of the lowdown on Lohan`s latest meltdown.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Lindsay Lohan was apparently arrested for drunk driving again.
ANDERSON (voice-over): When news broke early Tuesday morning that Lindsay Lohan had been busted for DUI once again, it almost seemed like we were all suffering a flashback. Wasn`t she just booked for DUI a few days ago?
JULIA ALLISON, EDITOR AT LARGE "STAR MAGAZINE": I think Lindsay is starting to really like driving under the influence. You really can`t make this kind of thing up.
ANDERSON: Yes, the famous recovering alcoholic has now served herself a double shot of trouble. She is facing another DUI and a brand new cocaine possession charge. On "The View," Barbara Walters couldn`t believe what she was seeing.
BARBARA WALTERS, "THE VIEW": What is it? Is it that you are so addicted? I mean, I just don`t understand.
ANDERSON: Trust us, the story behind this latest arrest is even more ridiculous than her first DUI when she crashed her Benz into a tree over the Memorial Day weekend. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT brings you the freaky story of how the freaky Friday star ended up with twin DUI cases. What is her dad, an ex-con himself, saying about his troubled daughter`s predicament.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Do you hold yourself at all responsible for what Lindsay is going through?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Of course I do. If I didn`t, I would be a liar.
ANDERSON: What do her new troubles mean for her new movie? And the biggest question of all, what about that alcohol monitoring ankle bracelet she`s made a big deal of wearing lately?
ALLISON: Lindsay, did you turn on the ankle bracelet? No? Oh, no batteries in your ankle bracelet?
ANDERSON: Police say Lindsay`s latest incident began with a car chase through the streets of Santa Monica. "Star Magazine`s" Julia Allison tells the story to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.
ALLISON: Lindsay is out partying hard. She gets in her car at 1:30 a.m., and then starts chasing a car. They don`t know it is her.
ANDERSON: The car Lohan was allegedly following was driven by the mother of Lohan`s personal assistant who had had enough and quit hours before. Police say that woman called 911 and pulled into this Santa Monica parking lot where the cops met them.
LT. ALEX PADILLA, SANTA MONICA POLICE DEPT: They detained parties involved in the argument. One of those parties turned out to be Lindsay Lohan. After officers conducted the initial investigation, they determined that she was driving her vehicle under the influence.
ANDERSON: Police say Lindsay had a blood alcohol level between .12 and .13, well above the legal limit of .08. You won`t believe what police say happened when they searched Lindsay in jail.
ALLISON: Lindsay gets to the police station and the police do a search and, low and behold, in her pockets is cocaine. Brilliant.
ANDERSON: So for those of you keeping score at home, Lindsay has now been booked on two DUI counts, plus the DUI from that May car crash, possession of cocaine, bringing a controlled substance into a jail, and driving on a suspended license. Take note of that last one, it could be a doozy.
ALLISON: Driving on a suspended license seems like the least of those charges, and yet that is what sent Paris Hilton to jail. So Lindsay, I would be worried right now.
ANDERSON: This latest arrest comes less than two weeks after Lohan ended a 45-day stint in rehab. Since then, she raised eyebrows by still going to parties while voluntarily wearing an alcohol monitoring bracelet on her ankle. Her rep said she was doing it to dispel any questions about her sobriety. A lot of good that did.
Police tell SHOWBIZ TONIGHT she was wearing it when she was arrested.
ALLISON: She clearly thought that she was changing the public`s perception of her by wearing an ankle bracelet. And yet by going out and partying, that shows that she had no idea the true depth of her problem. She clearly didn`t solve it.
ANDERSON: And now she is hearing from one person who may know what she`s going through, her father.
MICHAEL LOHAN, LINDSAY LOHAN`S FATHER: I made some really stupid choices in my life. I made some mistakes.
ANDERSON: On "LARRY KING LIVE," Michael Lohan, who was recently leased from prison after serving time for drunk driving, told Court TV`s Lisa Bloom he`s trying to reach out to his troubled daughter.
LISA BLOOM, COURT TV: How do you get Lindsay on that path, the path to sobriety?
LOHAN: By speaking to me, by speaking to her father, by letting me share my experience and how god turned my life around.
ANDERSON: Now Lindsay`s attorney is calling this latest incident a relapse, saying, quote, addiction is a terrible and vicious disease. The bracelet has now been removed. She is safe, out of custody and presently receiving medical care.
So now Lindsay Lohan, who used to scoff at her need for rehab, is now reportedly back in it once again, with the very real prospect of jail hanging over her.
And with Lindsay apparently unable to promote her new movie "I Know Who Killed Me," that film appears to be in danger of failing. And so is her career.
ALLISON: She is the consummate professional at screwing that up. She managed to do it yet again.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
ANDERSON: Tonight, Lindsay Lohan has a lot of people asking, is she fighting for her life? How will she ever recover from her legal troubles and, more importantly, her battle with addiction? With me tonight from Hollywood, Ken Seeley, lead interventionist from A&E`s show "Intervention," and here in New York, criminal defense attorney and TV Host Lauren Lake.
Lauren, I want to begin with you. When I heard this, I thought there is no way this is happening again. It is unbelievable, really, considering that Lindsay just finished a 45-day stay in rehab. She was wearing that alcohol monitoring device around her ankle to monitor her, to hopefully prevent her from drinking again. But now Lindsay has not one, but two DUI charges. Part of the vernacular here, but is Lindsay Lohan screwed?
LAUREN LAKE, CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Yes. Brooke, this is really bad. This young girl is in trouble, not only with the law, but she obviously has a huge alcohol and substance abuse problem. I am really concerned at what is going on here. Two DUIs in a short amount of time, cocaine possession, not to mention the fact we know she was in the car with two other passengers, which makes me concerned, as a defense attorney. Who are you hanging around with? Who would let her drive knowing what situation she is in?
This is what we found with stars a lot of times. They`re hanging around the wrong people, yes people that let them do what they want to do. They`re feeling like they`re above the law. And now she`s in trouble again. This is the problem.
ANDERSON: If you`re a true friend, you do not let her get behind the wheel. You call her a cab. You do not let her have the keys to that car. It is absurd. Frankly, it is just very, very sad. Ken, when she left rehab just two weeks ago, she headed immediately to Las Vegas to party at a nightclub while she had that monitoring bracelet on her ankle. Did she ever really give herself a chance at sobriety?
KEN SEELEY, A&E`S "INTERVENTION": You know, Brooke, I was really hoping that she was and rooting in her corner that she did get it. But obviously, as we see today, that she didn`t get it. She`s not ready for recovery. She hasn`t hit a bottom. The failures of her last four movies, you know, the -- also the new movie that was pulled from her, none of this is Lindsay`s bottom.
So what needs to happen now is the court needs to come in and hit -- make her hit that bottom. That`s what my prayer is.
ANDERSON: Explain to me how in the world she could relapse so quickly, because she`s been in rehab where they have been pounding it, I`m sure, into her head the problems she has and the damage she`s doing.
SEELEY: That`s the thing. When you haven`t hit a bottom, even though, you know, she`s been through two of the best treatment centers in the world. And even though she hasn`t been able to get the treatment, what happened here is she has that information in her mind. You can`t take that away from what the treatment centers and the best counselors and the best therapists and best doctors in the world. They put all that in her mind. So she will never be able to erase that.
So that`s a positive that we do have. That`s really going to help her when she did hit this bottom, again, relapse in -- using yesterday, this is going to help her realize that ouch. You know what they told me? It is right.
ANDERSON: Yes, too bad that information hasn`t made an impact yet. Lauren, her lawyers released a statement to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT saying that she has been monitored by that alcohol bracelet around her ankle and was tested daily. But late yesterday they were informed she had relapsed. Do you think Lindsay just didn`t care? Did she just say, catch me if you can?
LAKE: I think this girl has a problem. Substance abuse is a serious issue in this country. And sometimes people take it as, oh, just catch me if you can, I don`t care. I`m not quite sure if this is the case here, Brooke. This seems like a sick, young girl. We know she has family problems. We know she has drinking problems. Now we know she has drug problems.
This is a different situation than what we saw with Paris. I think Lindsay Lohan is really, really in trouble. And, you know, you`re right, it is time for a little jail time. It is time for the court to introduce rock bottom to her before she kills herself or someone else.
ANDERSON: Introduce a different scene than what we were just looking at, which was her frolicking at a party and just living it up with friends who may not be the best influence. And, Ken, you know, you say she has not hit rock bottom. Do you think that this could finally serve as her wakeup call? She now has two court dates in two different counties on the same day, August 24th. Could this be the turning point?
SEELEY: You know, Brooke, I hate to say it, but I don`t believe this is going to be her rock bottom. I really believe that the judge has to step up to the plate and mandate drug court, mandate something that is going to make her, you know, be accountable for the next two years. And that will be her bottom. I don`t think this is her bottom. I don`t think she`s done yet.
ANDERSON: That is unfortunate to hear. Ken Seeley, Lauren Lake, don`t go anywhere, because we`re bringing you back in a bit. Thank you very much. I got so much more on Lindsay Lohan`s shocking DUI arrest. Coming up, her estranged dad, Michael Lohan, speaking out.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
LOHAN: The people around Lindsay are just there for the wrong reasons. They enable her. They turned a blind eye to what was going on.
(END VIDEO CLIP
ANDERSON: I know Lindsay and her dad haven`t always had the best relationship, but I hope her parents will do something here. Can Lindsay be saved? Our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT special report, Lindsay busted again, coming up.
Also, more young Hollywood in serious trouble. Tonight, the unbelievable story of what happened at a Britney Spears magazine photo shoot, including why she cleaned up dog poop with an expensive dress. That`s disgusting. And I really wish someone would please step in and help Britney clean up her life. We have that straight ahead.
Another young out of control star, Paris Hilton; remember how she said she would change when she got out of jail? I haven`t really seen any changes yet. But tonight, could surfing lessons be the key to turning her life around?
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP
LOHAN: She has a wonderful heart and she is such a good person. And she just got caught up look I did and so many other people did. People don`t want to face the truth.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Lindsay Lohan`s estranged dad there very emotional over his daughter who just got out of rehab, getting arrested today for DUI again. So shocking. Tonight I have a special report, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT special report, tackling the tough questions. Can anyone save Lindsay? Is her career over? Will she go to jail? All that and more coming up in just a bit.
But, you know, if it is not Lindsay, it is Britney. Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. I`m Brooke Anderson. Tonight, there is startling news that Britney Spears had a huge and embarrassing melt down during a photo shoot with "OK! Magazine." That interview was supposed to help fix her image.
A spokesperson for "OK Magazine" tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, quote, "OK! Magazine spent a heart breaking day with Britney Spears and witnessed first hand an emotional cry for help that will leave you shocked and sad. This week, on news stands Friday, the truth will be told."
With me tonight in New York, senior correspondent for VH1`s 24Sizzler.com, David Caplan. David, they`re not saying yet specifically what happened. But TMZ is reporting that she was paranoid during the interview. At one point her eyes rolled back in her head. At one point she used her expensive Chanel dress to clean up a mess her dog had made on the floor.
I mean, that`s gross and the waste of a good dress. But what makes this especially extraordinary is that "OK!~ Magazine" is known as a magazine that does everything possible to make stars look good. So David, how bad is this?
DAVID CAPLAN, VH1: This is pretty bad. This is pretty bad. I spoke to someone at the magazine earlier who again assured me the photos are -- they are heart wrenching and that we`re going to be really shocked when we see them, and that it was a tough decision for them to sort of veer from their policy of when they are -- their photo spreads are more celeb friendly.
But I was told it was a very difficult decision for them to make. But in the short-term though, it is going to be great for them. It is going to show that they didn`t buckle down to anyone, that they were like, OK, we`re going to show the real Britney. And every reader will love that. People don`t want to see a candy-coated story about Britney Spears.
ANDERSON: You know, this was supposed to be her comeback photo spread, David. Yet she reportedly came with her own makeup artist and hair person. That`s all well and good if they do a great job. But these folks reportedly didn`t do her justice. And now we are going to see her, warts and all, again. David, is she just clue less?
CAPLAN: Yes, she is completely clue less. Let`s not forget this is the second interview she`s done where she wasn`t prepared. She did that interview with Matt Lauer several months ago and again her hygiene wasn`t the greatest. And it is shocking because this girl, she`s a pro. She`s been in the business for years. She knows what it means to have celeb stylists, to have publicists.
Yet I keep hearing that with Britney, she likes to be her own manager. She likes to be her own publicist. So it is really not that surprising if you really look at how she behaves.
ANDERSON: Yes, doesn`t have somebody else guiding her and giving her advice on what she should do. We`re looking at that video. Who can forget that, the infamous shaving of the head by Britney Spears herself. And then just a few days ago, Britney, followed by the paparazzi, pulled over to the beach, stripped down to her bra and panties, took a little dip and now this.
Is she basically giving everyone, I don`t know, the big middle finger, David, and saying, you know what, I do what I want, I have enough money to last a lifetime, get off my back?
CAPLAN: Absolutely. She does not feel that she needs to answer to anyone. That`s why she has parted ways with her publicist, her managers. She thinks, you know what, I`m Britney Spears. I`ve come this far. I know what I`m doing. Trust me. And obviously it has been proven she doesn`t.
ANDERSON: Yes, when this comes out, should she even try to do damage control or should we all just get used to this? This is the new Britney?
CAPLAN: I think we should get used to it. She already shot a new video. That is going to be coming up in upcoming months. I think she should just sit fight and we`ll sort of forget about this interview in several months because she`ll do something else again.
ANDERSON: Very quickly, David, six months from now, if Britney Spears releases a new album, how does it have to be for her to get back into the good graces of her fans?
CAPLAN: It doesn`t have to be that good because we all are dying to see this comeback already that we have been talking about for months and months. It could tank but she`ll still sell records.
ANDERSON: Everybody likes a comeback queen, I suppose. David Caplan, thanks so much for joining us. We appreciate it. That "OK! Magazine" hits news stands this Friday.
All right, young Hollywood falling apart tonight. Lindsay Lohan`s shocking arrest for DUI again. Will she go to jail? Can anything be done to save her? Is her career over? So many important questions and we have it covered like no other entertainment news show. Our SHOWBIZ special report, Lindsay busted again, at 30 past the hour.
Well, another young out of control star, Paris Hilton, remember how she said she would change when she got out of jail. I haven`t seen any changes yet. But tonight could surfing lessons help turn her life around? That`s next. Also this --
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My mom is attacking me. Please help me.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Stay on the line with me.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Please help me.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: The shocking fight between a country star and her mother and it is all caught on tape. I`ve got the frightening 911 call that will leave you speechless. That`s coming up in just a bit. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT for Tuesday night is coming right back. Stay with us.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
ANDERSON: Paris Hilton has been out of jail now for a few weeks and we have all been waiting for her to deliver on her promise to do charity work. Tonight, it seems she`s finally getting started. She showed up to the Life Rolls On Foundation annual auction. The charity raises money for spinal cord injury research. Her good friend, a former pro surfer who is now paralyzed, founded the group.
Paris even bid on something. "People Magazine" reports she spent more than 17,000 dollars on surfing lessons with Adam Sandler. Today, the ladies of "The View" were a little skeptical.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
JOY BEHAR, "THE VIEW": People only watched her because she was a bad girl. Not because she`s a good girl. Once you`re a bad person, it is hard to then change --
WALTERS: She wasn`t a bad person.
BEHAR: She was a bad girl, quote/unquote.
(CROSS TALK)
BEHAR: I just don`t think -- she`s not going to get the attention she craves.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Yes. I don`t buy it just yet. I got to see more out of Paris. If she`s changed, that`s great. I really do hope that she keeps to her word, though.
Tonight in Hollywood, it is shock over another young Hollywood star in crisis. Lindsay Lohan just out of rehab, arrested again for DUI.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
LOHAN: The people around Lindsay are just there for the wrong reasons. They enable her. They turn a blind eye to what was going on.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Lindsay Lohan`s estranged father there, very emotional. We have got him speaking out. It is part of our SHOWBIZ special report, Lindsay busted again. So many big questions. Will she go jail? Is her career over? Can anyone save her? You got to stick around for that coming up next.
Also, the disturbing fight between a country star and her mother. And it is all caught on tape. I`ve got the frightening 911 call that will leave you speechless. That`s coming up in a bit.
And "American Idol" finalist Mandisa; she is right here. I`m going to ask her all about Kelly Clarkson`s battle with Clive Davis, Lindsay Lohan and how her body image helped her recognize Hollywood`s obsession with weight.

MICHAEL LOHAN, LINDSAY LOHAN`S FATHER: People have asked me do you feel responsible for what Lindsay is going through? And the answer is yes, I absolutely do.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Lindsay Lohan`s father speaks out about Lindsay getting busted again. Just weeks after leaving rehab, Lindsay Lohan is arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and cocaine possession. Is this it for her career? Is her life in danger? And should she go to jail? Tonight, a SHOWBIZ TONIGHT special report, "Lindsay Busted Again."
Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. It is 30 minutes past the hour. I`m Brooke Anderson in New York. A.J. Hammer has the night off. This is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show.
Let`s get you up to speed on the shocking news that Lindsay Lohan has been arrested again. Lindsay was arrested in Santa Monica, California, at 1:30 in the morning. Police say she had a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit and they found cocaine in her pants pocket.
Lindsay is now reportedly back in rehab, for a third time doing so. An arraignment has been set for August 24th, the same day she is supposed to appear in a Beverly Hills court for her Memorial Day weekend DUI bust. Earlier today, Lindsay`s father, Michael Lohan, spoke out about his daughter`s latest arrest on "Larry King Live." He told Court TV`s Lisa Bloom he hasn`t spoken to Lindsay in months. But he wants more than anything for her to get the help she needs. And he said the people surrounding her aren`t helping at all.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
M. LOHAN: It is said that people, places and things have a direct bearing on our life. And it is very true. And the people around Lindsay are there for the wrong reasons. They enable her. They turned a blind eye to what was going on. And they`re there to make a paycheck. I don`t care if it is a bodyguard, if it is the -- I don`t want to point fingers.
Just people have the wrong motive and intention. And they just -- they`re a terrible effect on Lindsay`s life. I said from the beginning, she has to clean house, like I did. And like I believe Dina does, and we have to start all over again from where we started and where we found the most strength and success in life, in each other.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: This leads us to tonight`s SHOWBIZ TONIGHT special report, "Lindsay Busted Again". I have a passionate coast-to-coast panel with me tonight. In Hollywood, lead interventionist for A&E`s hit reality, "Intervention", Ken Seeley, also celebrity publicist Howard Bragman; and joining me in New York, criminal defense attorney and TV host Lauren Lake, and investigative journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell, author of the book "Secrets can be murder."
Ken, explain this to me. Lindsay made a big deal of wearing that ankle bracelet, the alcohol monitoring device, you know, ever since she got out of rehab two weeks ago. Was it that the thing wasn`t working or that Lindsay just didn`t care anymore? Speaking of caring, did she have no regard for the fact she was putting other people`s lives in danger?
KEN SEELEY, INTERVENTIONIST, A&E`S "INTERVENTION": Brooke, when you suffer from the disease of addiction, it really doesn`t matter. She -- I believe she did this for a PR move. Just to show everybody, you know, look at me, I am clean and sober. And with the mind set that I`m not going to stay clean and sober, and I`m going to do whatever I want to do, as she -- as the example is what she did last night.
It is really sad. She`s going to end up killing herself or killing somebody else, really quick here.
ANDERSON: It is horrible to think about that and Lauren, you`re the criminal defense attorney, this is her second DUI arrest in just a couple of months. And her second time linked to cocaine. Besides rehab, how much legal trouble is she in here?
LAUREN LAKE, CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY: She`s in a lot, Brooke. And I`ll tell you what, I have represented clients over the years, that have had multiple DUIs. They don`t necessarily go to jail. Some get long probationary periods. However, the problem with Lindsay`s situation is it is back to that Paris thing, like she`s in a position to have a driver.
Somebody tell me why she is driving. There is no good reason. There is no excuse. Not to mention the fact that the court will take into account the proximity, the closeness and proximity of both of these arrests. Not to mention this time we have the cocaine in the pocket. So this is problematic for Lindsay.
There say chance she will do some jail time. And as we spoke about before, this may be the rock bottom that the court needs to create for her that she obviously isn`t experiencing on her own.
ANDERSON: Introduce her to life behind bars, maybe that will be the turning point. And, Howard, her latest movie, "I Know Who Killed Me" opens this weekend ironically. In the past when she was in rehab, she would leave to actually go work. It seems to me the best thing for her to do would be to just keep her butt in rehab and stop working.
HOWARD BRAGMAN, FIFTEEN MINUTES PUBLIC RELATIONS: Yeah, this is not a career problem. This is not a legal problem. This is a life problem. If she doesn`t clean up her act in the next couple of years, she`ll be dead by the time she`s 30. And it would all be for naught. It is a really sad situation. This is a very sick young woman.
A tragically sick -- and we even look at Paris. And Paris has family who love her to go home to, and they have a stable family life, and friends and sisters and brothers. We don`t see that with Lindsay. She doesn`t have that. And you wonder who she is going home to. As Michael said, who is enabling her at this point? Who is letting her get way with this?
And as you know, I`ve been there. I had a client die of an overdose on my watch. I vowed never to let it happen again. And somebody has to confront this young lady because she is not getting it. And it is just a tragedy.
ANDERSON: Oh, it certainly is, very tragic. Speaking of her family, a lot of people are wondering what Lindsay`s parents must be thinking right now. To see your child spiral out of control must be gut wrenching.
At one time she was a role model to young girls everywhere. On "Larry King Live" tonight, Lindsay`s dad, Michael, told Court TV`s Lisa Bloom that things all started changing at height of her career. Listen to this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
M. LOHAN: It was at the pinnacle of her career when other people came into her life that all that changed. The genre of the films, the people in her life, and you know, how they conducted themselves. And I really feel that it was at that point when all this occurred.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Jane, Michael says Lindsay needs to clean house, get rid of all the bad influences around her. You have been through recovery. What do you think? Do you agree? Is that what she needs to do, first?
JANE VALEZ-MITCHELL, INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST: Oh, she needs a lot of things, Brooke. This is a very complex problem. This is a girl with some very serious emotional and psychological problems. And she may very well be cross addicted, addicted to alcohol and drugs. That`s harder to kick sometimes than just being addicted to one substance.
On top of that, you know, her dad, I mean, he is part of the problem. The family is a mess. He`s gotten out of prison recently. His mom -- or her mom got a protection order against him. They had a messy divorce. There is all sorts of legal battles looming. Now he`s waving the olive branch. That should have been done a long, long time ago.
The final thing I have to say is she was a child actor. That`s a big factor, Brooke, because people who were child actors are always looking to experience the childhood that they never had. That`s why they`re always desperate to have fun. Because they never got to have that fun and experience a healthy normal childhood. This is a very, very complex problem, she needs therapy, in depth therapy.
ANDERSON: From your perspective, do you think she needs some tough love? Do people need to stop coddling her, or you to think they`re just to worried they`ll be taken off the payroll?
VALEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I think she has to get rid of the enablers. And she has to get rid of the bad companions. As they say in sobriety, the only thing that needs to change is everything. It is a spiritual program. The first thing that has to change is her attitude. She is trying to control her addiction. She`s why she volunteered to wear that alcohol monitoring bracelet. Very bad idea.
That`s where her best thinking has gotten her. What she needs to do is completely surrender. I can say as a recovering alcoholic, with 12 years of sobriety, that hitting bottom is one thing. And one thing only. It is completely admitting that you have absolutely no control over your disease, over the substance.
ANDERSON: Great point. Should Lindsay go to jail? That`s my next question. Two arrests and two rehab stays didn`t seem to wake her up. I really think that might be the only thing, at this point, that will. We are going to get our expert panel to weigh in on that next as our SHOWBIZ special report, "Lindsay Busted Again" continues. We`ll also have this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My mom is attacking me. Please help me.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Stay on the line with me.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Please help me.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Country singer Mindy McCready is arrested after making a strange phone call. We`ll tell you why Mindy McCready ended up under arrest after she called 911 and said her mother was attacking her. That`s straight ahead.
And you remember Mandisa from "American Idol", she`s proving you don`t have to win the title of "American Idol" to be successful. She`s right here and I`m going to get her take on Kelly Clarkson feud with Clive Davis, her new CD, and what she thinks about Lindsay`s situation. Straight ahead. Stay with us.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She was arrested for driving under the influence and transported here to the Santa Monica jail. While in the jail, officers found in her possession a small amount of cocaine.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: That was Lieutenant Alex Padilla (ph) with the Santa Monica police department after Lindsay Lohan was charged today with DUI, cocaine possession, and driving with a suspended license. She is already facing charges of DUI and hit and run from a Memorial Day weekend incident.
Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. I`m Brooke Anderson in New York. A.J. Hammer has the night off.
We continue now with our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT special report, "Lindsay Busted Again," with our passionate coast-to-coast panel.
Howard, I want to start with you now. Lindsay released on bail, $25,000 bail, reportedly back in rehab for the third time. At this point what do you think? Is rehab enough, or is it just time for her to do hard time? Is jail the only thing that is going to help her?
BRAGMAN: I don`t think rehab is enough. I think she`s tried rehab and it didn`t work. I think Daniel Baldwin talked about how actors can fake their way through rehab pretty well. I think you can learn the right words to say and they believe you, because you`re an actor.
But the truth is, in her head, she hasn`t hit rock bottom. And I think jail may be the only thing. I don`t say it in a bad way, but a good way, it may be the only thing that keeps her alive. There are drug courts and there are people who are sensitive to these problems. I think she`s got to understand she`s at the bottom, her life is in jeopardy. If it takes jail, she should go jail, and she should thank God for that.
Ken, we talk a lot with you about tough love. What do you think? Does she need the jail time? She could face up to three years, you know, with two DUIs and the cocaine possession. Will jail time scare her straight? You`ve been an interventionist for a long, long time. Do you see that happen?
SEELEY: You know, Brooke, I really believe that that`s the only thing that is going to save this young woman. She needs to do some jail time. I`m not saying three years. I think that would be more damaging. But she needs to do some jail time, feel what it tastes like to be in jail, as Paris did, go through that process. And then come out and be accountable through drug court. That`s the only thing I think that is going to save this poor young woman`s life. The only way we`re going to get through to her.
ANDERSON: Take some responsibility.
At the news conference today, police outlined the really bizarre circumstances surrounding her arrest, cops say they were called because Lindsay was chasing the mother of her former assistant. Listen to this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The chase started in here Santa Monica. It went for at least a mile if not a little bit more. The driver of the vehicle, the mother, was trying to make it here to the police department. She got close, about a block away, to the civic auditorium. That`s where our officers responded and detained everybody involved.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: OK, that is just baffling to me. Who chases someone else in a car? Officers also say that Lindsay couldn`t walk a straight line, touch her nose, or follow a small line the field sobriety test.
Jane, she could have killed somebody driving around like that. What do you think? Should she do time?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: Maybe she should do time. Maybe that`s up to a judge to decide. I basically feel that this is a cry for help. If you want to know what I think needs to happen, her entire family needs to go to therapy together. Get mom and dad together, get the younger siblings together, and have them sit around and thrash out what is really going on here.
Because I really believe when somebody is this self-destructive, it is addiction, but another component is a cry for help. She`s obviously deeply traumatized by what has been going on with her family. I think that would be one very, very hopeful thing; for the entire family to get together, make peace and start working on the real issues behind why they`re so dysfunctional.
ANDERSON: Hopefully the family and friends will notice this cry for help. There have been numerous cries for help all year long. When Lindsay got out of rehab a couple of weeks ago, her first stop was the Pure nightclub in Las Vegas.
Lauren, she took a lot of heat, even though she claims she wasn`t drinking. Once she gets out, should she not even hold a bottle of water in her hand, so people don`t think it is vodka? What should the girl do?
LAKE: No, Brooke, she can have water. Let`s make sure it is water.
BROOKE: Exactly.
LAKE: The problem is with a lot of young stars are they get themselves in this trouble and they don`t change their environment. You know if you have a problem, why are you going to a grocery store full of the issue? Why are you going to a bar when you have a drinking issue? Doesn`t make sense. Like I said, it goes back to the people she`s hanging around.
I don`t understand where are these people`s friends? My girlfriends would be like, Lauren, you need to go sit down somewhere.
ANDERSON: As would mine. We`re going have to end it there. But you have all been fantastic tonight during this very tragic situation for Lindsay Lohan. Howard Bragman, Ken Seeley, Lauren Lake, Jane Velez- Mitchell, thank you all for your insight.
LAKE: Thank you.
SEELEY: Thanks, Brook.
ANDERSON: And we`ve been asking you to vote on our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day: Lindsay Lohan, arrested again. Do you feel sorry for her? Keep voting? Cnn.com/showbiz. Write to us, showbiztonight@cnn.com. We`ll read some of your thoughts tomorrow.
This hasn`t been the best year for Lindsay Lohan, but it could be the year of "American Idol" finalist Mandisa. Everyone fell in love with her bold and beautiful look and sound during season five. And we all remember how she stood up to Simon Cowell when he made fun of her weight.
As it turns out it Mandisa who got the last laugh. She has had a hit single off her album "True Beauty" which comes out next week. And a new book about her experiences on "American Idol" called "Idoleyes". Mandisa is with me tonight in New York.
Great to see you.
MANDISA: Thank you.
ANDERSON: You look fantastic, beautiful.
MANDISA: Thank you so much.
ANDERSON: And we`re going to talk about all that you have going on in just a moment. But you know, you`ve been sitting here listening to us talk about Lindsay Lohan. You`ve been shaking your head.
She faces a lot of pressures. You face a lot of pressures in the spotlight.
MANDISA: Yeah.
ANDERSON: Can you relate to what maybe she`s going through?
MANDISA: Oh, gosh. I can absolutely relate. As a mater of fact I was sitting here very, very thankful that I couldn`t get arrested or couldn`t hurt anybody else with my addiction of choice, which is food. I really don`t believe I am any better than Lindsay is. I mean, a lot of people turn to alcohol. A lot of people turn to drugs.
I`ve turned to food for a long, long time. I don`t think anything is any better. I do feel sympathy for her. And I know that she has got the power to overcome it, just like I have the power to overcome it.
ANDERSON: That`s very courageous of you to say. How difficult is your addiction, has it been.
MANDISA: It is very, very hard. I think, as children there is often sometimes a void, and we try to fill it with so many things. And so it`s been a lifelong struggle for me. Certainly going on "American Idol" and have Simon Cowell, kind of put it out in the forefront was not easy.
ANDERSON: Can you believe he did that? What did the guy say? Are we going to have a bigger stage this year? I mean, it was awful.
MANDISA: It was embarrassing.
ANDERSON: You later forgave him, though.
MANDISA: I did. It took some time. I mean, my first reaction certainly was not forgiveness. But I just knew, you know, a lot of people have told him off, a lot of people have cussed him out. And that`s not really who I am. I knew forgiving him would be something he may not have experienced before. And really reacted like a true gentleman.
ANDERSON: Your new album "True Beauty", that`s what it is called, I understand the title was really inspire by negative things that happened to you on "Idol". What were those things?
MANDISA: You know, I just remember walking off the elevator in Hollywood week, and I thought I walked off into "America`s Next Top Model", not "American Idol" because everybody was beautiful. I was just like are you kidding me? I really have to compare to these girls. I realized that I don`t. And there is much more than one image of beauty. And I don`t think that we all have to fit that cookie cutter mold, that we don`t all have to be a size two. That we don`t all have to have, you know, blonde hair and blue eyes. That beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
And I believe that to be true. I think young girls really need to realize that and not try to live up to that unattainable standard of beauty that really doesn`t exist in the first place.
ANDERSON: What a great message. It is what is inside that counts.
MANDISA: Absolutely.
ANDERSON: It truly is what`s important. I want to get your perspective, really quickly, on Kelly Clarkson, because recently she issued an extraordinary apology about the whole feud with Clive Davis, the music mogul, about they had disagreements over what could be on her album. Can you relate to that?
MANDISA: I do.
ANDERSON: Creative differences?
MANDISA: I think, you know, Kelly has evolved. When I look at her first album and where she is today she`s really evolved as an artist and as a person. So I don`t blame her for wanting to write all of her songs and do her own music.
But what I have to say is I think -- I have so much respect for her, for actual apologizing, publicly. It really takes a big person to do that. So I`m really proud of her. I like her CD. I think it is incredible. So I have no complaints whatsoever. I think she`s a really big person to be able to do that.
ANDERSON: You should be proud of yourself. You`re a true beauty, Mandisa. Thanks so much for being here and her new CD, called "True Beauty" will be in stores next Tuesday.
Country star Mindy McCready is arrested after making a strange phone call.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My mom is attacking me. Please help me.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Stay on the line with me.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Please help me. Please help me.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANDERSON: Why she ended up under arrest after this call, after the break.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
ANDERSON: Country star singer Mindy McCready was arrested in Florida. And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has the bizarre 911 call that she made. The singer called police and said her mother was attacking her. She was arrested when sheriffs showed up at the house and saw scratches on her mother`s face.
That`s just the beginning. According to the arrest report, McCready struggled and had to be restrained, during the scuffle she hit her head on the ground, which caused the injury you see on her face in this mug shot you`re looking at.
Sheriffs also say McCready`s breath wreaked of alcohol, even though during the 911 call, she said she hadn`t been drinking.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: My mom and I are in an argument.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Are there any injuries?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She`s made marks -- she`s made on herself to make it look like I hurt her. I have a baby in my arms, my mom is attacking me. Please help me. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Stay on the line with me.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Please help me. Please help me.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Any injuries?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, just her scratching and her clawing. Her husband`s yelling (INAUDIBLE). And they`re trying to clean up whatever mess she made before you get here.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Anybody drinking or doing drugs over there tonight?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, sir. No. Not that I know of.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
ANDERSON: Deputies say McCready was so disruptive when they took her to jail, they had to use pepper spray to control her. McCready says the cops abused her and that she plans to take legal action. This isn`t the first trouble McCready has gotten into. In 2004, she was convicted of fraudulently obtaining prescription painkillers. She was on probation for that, when she was charged with DUI in 2005.
Yesterday we asked you to vote on our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day it was this. Lindsay Lohan media scrutiny, can she get a fair shake? And 44 percent of you say yes; 56 percent of you say no. Some of the e- mails:
Tony from Florida writes: I do believe Lindsay is the victim. All this negative media coverage that Lindsay is getting is not helping her."
Ed from Pennsylvania says: "Lindsay Lohan will never get a fair shake in the media again. She`s had enough chances and blew them all."
ANDERSON: It is time to see what is coming up on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.
Tomorrow, former teen heartthrobs, Cory Feldman and Cory Hayme (ph). I`ll ask them how they dealt with being young, and rich, and addicted. And get their advice for Lindsay.
Also, Joey Buttafuco, he used to have a cocaine problem. Now he`s in recovery and has a radio show trying to get others on the same path. Joey Buttafuco is here tomorrow.
That is a wrap for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. Thank you so much for watching, everyone. Have a great night. I`m Brooke Anderson in New York. "Glenn Beck" coming up next, right after the latest headlines from CNN "Headline News."
