Reese Witherspoon Apologizes after Arrest; Legendary Sportscaster Charged with DUI; Kim Kardashian Ready to Get Married Again; Countdown of Top 3 SHOWBIZ Secrets Revealed; Aftermath of Boston Bombings
Aired April 22, 2013 - 23:00 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
A.J. HAMMER, HOST: Well, you watched on "HLN AFTER DARK," the "Bold Accusation," Jodi shot last. Well, now on the "SHOWBIZ Countdown," I`ve got the top three "SHOWBIZ Justice Shockers," including the stunning claim that Jodi Arias actually hit on a guy on the way home from Travis`s memorial service.
Plus Reese Witherspoon`s big apology after her shocking arrest during her husband`s DUI stop. And wait until you hear the secrets of some of the biggest star cases ever. There he is, Legendary celebrity attorney Mark Geragos, revealing all right here.
SHOWBIZ TONIGHT starts right now.
(MUSIC)
HAMMER: Hello and thank you for watching. I`m A.J. Hammer.
And now that "HLN AFTER DARK" has delivered its verdict of the night in the Jodi Arias trial, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you that there is a brand-new Jodi bombshell. And it is part of tonight`s "SHOWBIZ Countdown," top three "SHOWBIZ Justice Shockers" that are breaking today.
Kicking off our countdown at No. 3, something that we never thought we`d see. Yes, this really is a mug shot of America`s sweetheart. That is Reese Witherspoon right there.
She was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct for giving cops a hard time. This is after they pulled over her and her husband Jim Toth in Atlanta. They arrested him on charges of driving under the influence.
Dramatic new developments tonight, and attorney Mark Geragos is with us from Hollywood. Mark, of course, has represented some of the biggest stars in the courtroom, from Michael Jackson to Chris Brown. And his brand-new book is just fascinating. It`s called "Mistrial: An Inside Look at How the Criminal Justice System Works and Sometimes Doesn`t."
Mark, always great to see you. And you know what this is about.
MARK GERAGOS, CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Good to see you, too, A.J.
HAMMER: You`ve been here with other stars before. Today we saw Reese apologizing, and then at a court hearing this morning, her attorney said that she`d be joining up with the so-called pretrial intervention program. I`ve got to ask if she is handling this the way you would advise her if you were her attorney.
GERAGOS: Well, she`s fallen victim to what we like to say in the business is called contempt of cop. And if you -- if you fail the attitude test, she gets arrested.
This pretrial -- it`s basically a pretrial diversion. You just be a good girl and go on your way and then the case gets dismissed. I suppose it`s as best as can be expected.
I don`t know why in the world she can`t or she`s going to be arrested because she`s protesting the arrest of her husband. I mean, it seems to me in America you still have a First Amendment right to voice your concerns...
HAMMER: Yes.
GERAGOS: ... even if it is an officer. And I guess the people around her figure it`s better to just get in and out of this thing rather than have her contest it.
HAMMER: I would absolutely agree with you. And to be clear, because I know some people might call celebrity justice here or maybe special treatment, but I know that this is a program that`s afforded to basically anybody at least once a year in these circumstances.
But at one point she actually reportedly told the cops, "Do you know who I am?" Clearly she regrets what she did. Here`s what she told SHOWBIZ TONIGHT: "Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now, but I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many, and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation, and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police, and I am very sorry for my behavior."
I would like now to bring in Jane Velez-Mitchell, who of course, is the host of "THE JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL SHOW," weeknights, 7 p.m. Eastern on HLN.
Jane, I saw the e-mail that Reese Witherspoon was arrested, and I was shocked. Like Reese arrested? This has to be wrong. You have to have been blown away, as well.
JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL, HOST, "JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL": Maybe she should do a new movie, "Illegally Blonde." But she`s been such a good girl. Who knows? She wasn`t behind the wheel herself. This might give her some street cred. We don`t know.
I will say, if you`re going to do a dumb thing -- and I`ve certainly done dumb things. I`m 18 years sober, but back when I was drinking, I did some humdingers. She`s handled it as best she can. She said, "I`m deeply embarrassed. I messed up. I clearly had one drink too many." She cancelled her interviews, which makes sense, because they would have only asked her about this incident. But she did walk the red carpet which is kind of like walking the walk of shame.
HAMMER: Yes. We`re looking at a mug shot of an embarrassed person right there. Look at her. We would never expect this from Reese Witherspoon. She is such a straight shooter. She actually -- you might remember that she once poked fun at stars who behaved badly to get noticed. Watch what she said at the MTV Movie Awards. This was back in 2011.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
REESE WITHERSPOON, ACTRESS: I just want to say to all the girls out there, like, I know it`s cool to be bad. I get it. All right. It`s cool to be bad. But it`s also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show.
When I came up in this business, you made a sex tape, you were embarrassed and you hid it under your bed. And like if you took naked pictures of yourself on your cell phone, you hide your face, people.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: And of course, she wasn`t doing this to get noticed or get attention. But of course, now she has to deal with being embarrassed.
But she actually followed through with her red carpet duties, as Jane just mentioned. This was last night at the premiere for her new movie, "Mud." Except she didn`t do any interviews at the red carpet and today did cancel TV interviews. In fact, we were scheduled to talk to her, too, Mark. I wish we could have talked to her, but I would have to say probably a good move, wouldn`t you agree?
GERAGOS: From a P.R. standpoint, she hit all the buttons. She showed remorse. She apologized. She admitted -- she gave a mea culpa and went on her way.
I mean, she was never in any legal kind of jeopardy here. As I said, this is nothing more than contempt of cop or pass -- failing the attitude test. And I suppose that it`s more of a P.R. problem, and as you guys would know better than I would in terms of that. It tarnishes her squeaky clean image, but people forget about it.
The public has got about a 90-day shelf life for these kinds of things, and they won`t remember 90 days from now.
HAMMER: Which was a good reason for her not to do, you know, 20-some-odd interviews today going on tape and just perpetuating the story. So all right.
GERAGOS: Exactly right.
HAMMER: We`re going to let you -- we`re going to let you move on, and we`re going to move on from one shocking celebrity DUI arrest to another.
This comes in at No. 2 in our "SHOWBIZ Countdown" of "Celebrity Justice Shockers": Legendary sportscaster Al Michaels also arrested over the weekend. He was charged with misdemeanor DUI.
Now, the current play-by-play announcer for NBC`s "Sunday Night Football" was arrested in Santa Monica on Friday night, spends a little over five hours in the drink at the Santa Monica City Jail. The sergeant handling the case tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that Michaels was very cooperative, which is always good to hear, Mark.
What kind of advice would you offer Al about his court appearance?
GERAGOS: If it`s reported to be true that he had a .08, it`s entirely likely that this case either won`t get filed as a DUI or it will get reduced to something less than a DUI. Point oh-eight is the legal limit here in California, and I would not be surprised in the least to see something like a reckless driving or an exhibition of speed or some other such lesser offense from the DUI.
For somebody like Al Michaels. I don`t think, you know, having a pop or a couple glasses of wine, I don`t think is the biggest deal in the world. To borrow Jane`s expression, it probably gives the -- gives him some street cred with football fans.
HAMMER: And that -- you know, I bet -- just that moment I heard it: He just fired his attorney because he took your advice, and he`s just going to go with that.
Time now to reveal our No. 1 "Celebrity Justice Shocker" tonight. This is another bombshell in the Jodi Arias murder trial.
She apparently flirted with another man just hours after she attended the memorial service for Travis Alexander, of course, the boyfriend she`s accused of killing. Clinical psychologist Janeen DeMarte retained by the prosecution just revealed in court that Jodi gave her phone number to a guy that she met on the plane. Watch this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
JANEEN DEMARTE, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST: After the memorial service, the records indicated that, on the plane ride home, Ms. Arias exchanged phone numbers with another male, who she then called right when she came home after Mr. Alexander`s memorial service.
That would be an example to show that, at that point, there was a devaluing, a despising, that one who had just lost someone who`s very close to them was able to engage in according behavior like that right after the memorial service.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Right after the memorial service. Jane, the term "flirting with disaster" comes to mind for me. I think this is another case where I`m saying yet another thing not to help Jodi Arias in her case here.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: There is a reason that this is being turned into a Lifetime movie. Her responses after killing Travis Alexander, her behavior, outrageous.
She leaves him a voicemail, inviting him to "Othello" when she knows he`s dead. She goes to Utah and canoodles, makes out with another guy. She goes to his memorial service and pretends to be upset. She sends flowers to his grandmother, and she picks up a guy on the way home from the memorial service.
Just jaw-dropping behavior, and the prosecution says she`s a borderline personality, and that`s why.
HAMMER: I think the Lifetime movie could possibly be a six-parter they have so much to work with.
Jane, Mark, thank you both. And Mark, do not go anywhere. We cannot wait to hear the secrets of some of your high-profile celebrity cases.
Plus, I`m firing up another blockbuster "SHOWBIZ Countdown" for you tonight. You`ve got to watch the top three "SHOWBIZ Secrets Revealed," including this stunner: why Zooey Deschanel was just tagged as a terrorism suspect in the Boston bombing case. Really? Zooey, a terror suspect? What`s that all about. Also, the stunning Kim Kardashian confessions from her special interview from Ryan Seacrest.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
KIM KARDASHIAN, REALITY TV STAR: I was waiting for this amazing experience where I can just do whatever I want, eat whatever I want, feel great, and it just hasn`t been that way.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: I`m talking amazing, brand-new details about Kim`s rough pregnancy. Only one "SHOWBIZ Secret" can top the countdown. The question is, which will it be?
This is SBT, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, on HLN.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
RYAN SEACREST, TV/RADIO HOST: You`re going to have this baby with Kanye. Do you think that you would get married again?
KARDASHIAN: I think that I would get married again. I mean, that`s...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You can tell by the smile on your face the answer to that.
KARDASHIAN: That`s what I`ve always wanted.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Tonight "SHOWBIZ Divorce Court": a stunner from Kim Kardashian, revealing last night on the family`s E! News special that yes, she`s ready to get married yet again, the news breaking just two days after finalizing her divorce from Kris Humphries. But hey, you know, maybe the third time really is the charm.
Kim Kardashian is ready to move on. With her divorce just finalized, the mom-to-be has all eyes on her future. We`re talking baby, marriage, and of course, reality TV.
Kim and Kris famously called off their marriage after just 72 days back in 2011, and after a year-and-a-half of battling it out in the courts, it`s finally a done deal. But could Kim rushing into marriage yet again, presumably with Kanye West, be a bad move?
Well, let me ask Kendra G. She`s the entertainment correspondent and personality on Atlanta`s own B-103. And I know you`ve been talking about this on the radio, Kendra.
KENDRA G., ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT, V103 ATLANTA: Yes.
HAMMER: So do you see Kim Kardashian living her "happily ever after," the thing that she`s always wanted, with that the man she`s sitting next to, Kanye West?
KENDRA G.: Well, do you think Kanye is going to marry Kim Kardashian? Now, that`s really the question. I know Kim Kardashian would love to be married to Kanye. I`m not sure Kanye is going to put a ring on it, though, A.J. Just being honest. I don`t think he`s going to put a ring on it.
HAMMER: OK. So you don`t think this is going to happen? That`s...
KENDRA G.: I mean, Kanye West, listen, he`s already gotten what he wants from Kim Kardashian. She`s very supportive. She`s having his child. Why marry her? I mean, what is the -- what would be the point, you know, at this moment in time?
HAMMER: I would hope that maybe Kanye is a deep enough guy who is interested in something bigger than what he got out of her, a baby.
KENDRA G.: Remember, he got her pregnant while she was married to somebody else.
HAMMER: Yes.
KENDRA G.: So I mean, we`ve got to look at the foundation of how this whole thing began. It could happen, but I don`t see the need of it to happen for Kanye West`s story.
HAMMER: You`re saying knowing Kanye the way you`ve gotten to know who Kanye is?
KENDRA G.: Yes. Kanye right now, I don`t see him wanting to marry Kim Kardashian.
HAMMER: Well, obviously, there was no "happily ever after" with Kris Humphries, and Kim`s divorce from him reportedly ended with Kris not getting the annulment that he wanted. It is officially declared a divorce. He did not get a dime from Kim here.
So there`s not going to be a trial to prove his claim that the marriage was a fraud created for Kim`s reality show. I actually didn`t think it was going to go this way. No revenge for Kris here.
Kendra, are you surprised that Kim got all she wanted, and Kris got nothing? Because of course, she was always made out to be the one who wronged him, right?
KENDRA G.: Yes, that is true, but you`ve got to remember: like, Kris was a man scorned. Now, Kim Kardashian left him after 72 days of marriage, then started dating his boss`s best friend. As you know, Jay-Z was once part owner of the Brooklyn Nets. So this was all horrible for him. So I actually kind of feel bad, but I`m happy he didn`t get any of Kim Kardashian`s money. He doesn`t deserve that.
HAMMER: I`m just a little surprised, though, as a guy who clearly got the raw deal in all of this, that it legally went this way. Obviously, the prenup was effective...
KENDRA G.: Right.
HAMMER: in making sure that no money went to him. But Kim, of course, took a lot of flak for filing for divorce from Kris after just those 72 days. Last night on the E! special we saw her reveal why she did it. Let`s watch.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
KARDASHIAN: Just because you think you find it, and you realize that`s not it, I think I was brave enough just to realize that quickly and not waste time. And I found what I really wanted.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Yes. Kendra, you have Kim opening up about what happened there. Do you think maybe the critics have been too hard on her?
KENDRA G.: Well, you know what? I appreciate her honesty. And I also appreciate her leaving her marriage if she was not happy.
You know, it`s kind of the reverse, though. Men do these things all the time. So now we have a woman that has been in that situation, and she left to be happy. She found her Prince Charming, so I`m happy for her for that. I am.
HAMMER: I agree with all of that. It was just against the backdrop of that whole marriage and the reality show that I think made us all crazy.
Kendra G., I appreciate you sounding off tonight. Thanks.
KENDRA G.: I appreciate you, A.J. Love you.
HAMMER: Love you, too.
All right. We move now from divorce court to celebrity court. Tonight, big-time secrets from celebrity cases that made enormous headlines.
Why did Chris Brown plead to beating up Rihanna? Was the Michael Jackson molestation case really a shakedown? Well, super celebrity attorney Mark Geragos represented both of those mega stars. He is right here with the secrets from their cases.
This is part of another fantastic countdown. It`s the top three "SHOWBIZ Secrets Revealed."
Also, did you see this? You know, the brand-new Dove ad about women`s body image that`s caused a sensation?
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is the sketch that you helped me create. And that`s the sketch that somebody described of you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: I cannot wait to show you this tonight. It`s the male response. We know how much women discount their beauty, unfortunately. Well, now I am revealing what men really think of their image. Wait until you see this.
This is SBT, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, on HLN.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
HAMMER: Right now Legendary secrets revealed. Grammy-winning superstar John Legend and his fiance, Chrissy Teigen, are getting ready to tie the knot after the six years they`ve been together. Well, tonight, get ready, because we`re getting the inside story on their big wedding plans straight from the bride herself.
And I know this wedding will be one for the record books, but where will it take place? What will the wedding dress look like? And what kind of cake will the happy couple serve?
Well, Chrissy actually spilled some secrets to me about her fabulous wedding, but first I had to ask about the Legendary love and how it all got started. Here now, my "SHOWBIZ Newsmaker" interview with Chrissy Teigen.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
HAMMER: Did you know who he was when you met?
CHRISSY TEIGEN, JOHN LEGEND`S FIANCE: I kind of knew. I remember thinking he was a lot older than he was. But I -- yes, I met him on the set of our music video. So...
HAMMER: OK.
TEIGEN: And that`s kind of why I`m a little worried when he has his own videos to shoot now. Is he going to find someone else to marry?
HAMMER: Listen, it`s part of the business, you know. But what happened? Was he kind of hitting on you?
TEIGEN: Yes...
HAMMER: Were you kind of hitting on him?
TEIGEN: ... definitely.
HAMMER: It was all John?
TEIGEN: No, it was all him. Well, I was in my underwear, and he was fully clothed in a full suit, and I guess seven years later it`s still the story.
HAMMER: The man does look very stylish in a suit. You know that.
TEIGEN: Yes.
HAMMER: And I know you`re not ready to give away the date yet. And I`m sure you`re going to try to maintain some...
TEIGEN: We just got a date ourselves.
HAMMER: ... some -- well, I know you want to maintain some privacy for the big event. But share some details about the day. I mean, share some big news you can break for us right now.
TEIGEN: Oh, God, some -- I wish I had something good for you. Basically - - oops, as my phone goes off. My apology.
HAMMER: That`s John saying, "Don`t tell him anything."
TEIGEN: I know. He knows. He knows what`s happening. Basically, I can tell you that the food is going to be spectacular, very rustic, and we`re going to make people kind of trek somewhere.
HAMMER: Ah. OK. Are you going to have, like, the mini individual cakes or are you going to do a big cake?
TEIGEN: Here, I will actually -- here is some breaking news for you. My - - breaking news, as if anyone is going to care. My cake is very important to me, because I don`t like sweets. So I didn`t want, like, a traditional wedding cake. And what I`m going to do is do a crepe cake, which is like hundreds of those crepes stacked on top of each other with pastry filling and raspberry sauce. And it`s very -- that is my cake, and I`m thrilled.
HAMMER: Sounds very decadent. I thought when you said you don`t like sweets you were going to do, like, a giant saltlick or something.
TEIGEN: Oh, God. I should. I love salt. Just, like a bunch of horses around.
HAMMER: Well, just to let you know how closely I`m following the details, or people trying to figure out the details of your big wedding. I`ve read Monique Lhullier, Vera Wang. Everybody wants to know...
TEIGEN: I`m thrilled, and I`m not discussing...
HAMMER: ... what the dress is going to look like. Can you reveal something about that?
TEIGEN: It`s Vera Wang. And the only reason I`m not -- I`m actually not discussing what it looks like is because John is very weird about it. He doesn`t want to know a thing. He actually opened up my laptop one day, and it was the first thing he saw, and I completely changed the dress after he saw it. So it`s really important that it`s a secret.
But it`s Vera, and it`s soft and gorgeous. I`m really excited for it.
HAMMER: Well, I hear your iPhone going off. So you better get back to John. Tell him I say hello and just let me know where I need to show up for this big wedding.
TEIGEN: I will.
HAMMER: All right, Chrissy. Thanks for being here.
TEIGEN: Thank you.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
HAMMER: And John, stay off of Chrissy`s computer.
All right. Everybody saw that shocking Dove ad, of course, about the way women really see themselves, so much less beautiful than they really are.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is the sketch that you helped me create. That`s the sketch that somebody described of you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: But did you see this? There`s a brand-new Dove ad that`s causing a huge sensation of its own. Now find out what men think of themselves.
Plus, get ready for the "SHOWBIZ Countdown" tonight. It`s the top three "SHOWBIZ Secrets Revealed." You`ve got to get ready for the secrets behind some of the biggest celebrity trials ever. From Chris Brown to Michael Jackson. What`s the real reason Chris Brown pled guilty to abusing Rihanna? Super celebrity lawyer Mark Geragos right here to reveal the secrets from his biggest Hollywood cases.
This is SBT, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, on HLN.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
HAMMER: Right now, the "SHOWBIZ Countdown," "SHOWBIZ Secrets Revealed." So why in the world was actress Zooey Deschanel identified on a TV newscast as a suspect in the Boston terror attacks?
Kim Kardashian`s secret pregnancy pain, Kim opening up for the first time about what her first two trimesters have really been like.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
KARDASHIAN: I was waiting for this amazing experience where I can just do whatever I want, eat whatever I want, feel great, and it just hasn`t been that way.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Which star`s secret will top the SHOWBIZ countdown? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT continues right now.
(MUSIC)
HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. I am A.J. Hammer in New York. Thank you for watching. Let us kick off tonight`s SHOWBIZ Countdown of the day`s top three SHOWBIZ secrets revealed with number three, and it is a stunner from Kim Kardashian. She is now opening up for the first time about the secrets of what she calls a scary pregnancy. Kim just talked about the tough time that she is having as a mom-to-be in her family`s E! News special which aired last night.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
KARDASHIAN: I was waiting for this amazing experience, where I can just do whatever I want, eat whatever I want, feel great, and it just hasn`t been that way. I haven`t had morning sickness, so I have heard that I am really lucky and I feel lucky.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She hasn`t had morning sickness ...
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: But her back hurts, her breasts hurt, her stomach hurts, her feet hurt, her head hurts, her eyes hurt, her nails hurt.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So it has had a little bit of an effect.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my God, yes.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Kim is admitting this pregnancy has been quite the wake-up call. Kendra G. is with us tonight. Kendra is an entertainment correspondent and radio personality on Atlanta`s own V-103. Always great having you here, Kendra G.
KENDRA G.: Great being here with you.
HAMMER: Well, let`s talk about what`s going on with Kim. I loved seeing how candid she was, revealing the secrets of her pregnancy. I got to imagine this is all going to eventually play out on the family`s reality TV show. You have, Kim, though, dealing with some very serious and some very scary issues here, Kendra G. Could it be a little too real for reality TV?
KENDRA G.: Well, no. I think she will share all of it on her reality TV. And this is the thing when you become pregnant, you know, different women have different experiences. And I appreciate Kim Kardashian being quite honest with what she is going through at the moment, but I think the cameras are going to capture it all. I even think we might see the baby be born. I do.
HAMMER: Now, do you think that`s a good idea? Because, of course, she wouldn`t be the first Kardashian to do that, we saw her sister Courtney give birth on television, which is an experience we all always remember. Should Kim be keeping that a secret or show it to the world? What do you think she should do?
KENDRA G.: She got to show it to the world, A.J., because you got to remember, he base is she is a reality star. We are so engrossed into her life. This is a very big moment, she is pregnant by a superstar, rapper Kanye West, I want to see the baby be born. I do.
HAMMER: And by the way, Kim said that she in Kanye are not getting show of their baby on TV, at least at first. So, that almost tells me, well, do they show the baby after it is born, if they show the birth? But do you actually even believe any of that? Are we destined for a Kim-ye and baby, probably a spin off show, "I Matched."
KENDRA G.: It will be a spin off. Kim Kardashian is very narcissistic, which I love about her. So, when this baby comes out being so beautiful, she is going to want to share that with the world. So, I`m not worried about that. We will see a picture of the Kim-ye baby, A.J., for sure.
HAMMER: But what do you think is the secret to how good her skin looks? So, you look at these pictures, isn`t it? I mean
KENDRA G.: Yes!
HAMMER: I mean I`ve never got a comment on a woman`s skin. I`m looking at, you know, this porcelain face, it`s amazing.
KENDRA G.: A.J., she is a multimillionaire. When you have that kind of money your face should always be flawless, OK?
(LAUGHTER)
HAMMER: All right. Kendra, thanks.
KENDRA G.: You`re welcome.
HAMMER: From Kim Kardashian`s confessions to number two on our SHOWBIZ Countdown tonight, the top secrets of the attorney who has been at the center of some of the biggest high profile cases of our time. Including Chris Brown`s and Michael Jackson`s. Criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos represented both of these big stars and along with attorney Pat Harris has written a truly fascinating, must-read book, it`s called mistrial, an insider`s look at how the criminal justice system works. Mark Geragos joining us from Hollywood. Now, great having you here, Mark.
GERAGOS: Thanks for having me, A.J.
HAMMER: Of course, and you really have seen it all. Let`s roll back some of what you have done. Back in 2002 you represented Scott Peterson, who was convicted, of course, of murdering his wife Laci and their unborn son. You represented Michael Jackson in the early stages of his child molestation trial until you got caught up in the Scott Peterson case. 2009, you represented Chris Brown when he plead guilty to assaulting Rihanna. I got to know, what is the secret to representing celebrities like that when so much of the public has already so often made up their mind about them?
GERAGOS: It is an amazing kind of thing to see. I mean I`ve been doing this for 30 years and I always joked that people assume that all you do is defend celebrities, but probably 70 percent of the practice are people you have never heard of and never want to have you hear about them. What you at least if there is a secret is passionate about what you do, and make sure that you understand when these clients come in like all clients, they have to understand that it is not unlike going to an oncologist if you`ve got cancer. We`re in charge. We make the decisions. We`ll take input from them. But at the end of the day, we`re going to do it my way or you are going to take the highway.
HAMMER: And that`s why Michael Jackson came to you and why Scott Peterson came to you, and those guys didn`t plead guilty. However, another big star that I mentioned that you handled, Chris Brown he did plead guilty. Did you have to convince him to do that or instruct him this is what we`re going to do?
GERAGOS: On the contrary. I mean Chris has said this, and I am not revealing any attorney-client, because he said it publicly. He wanted to take responsibility immediately. I wouldn`t let him. I said, no, we`re going to work through this, I`m going to do what I have to do in order to get you to a place where I think you deserve to be and that`s what ended up happening. And, you know, I am proud to say with Chris specifically even though he plead and took responsibility and he worked real hard to go through the domestic violence counseling and everything else, he brought Rihanna by a couple of months ago to the office and I had a nice chat with her, just one-on-one about all the work that he has been through, and she confirmed what I have seen as well over the last four years or so, there has been a monumental change with him. He is somebody that I couldn`t be prouder of.
HAMMER: Well, that`s good to hear coming from you who I trust implicitly and we hear so many different things about Chris and it`s been hard to sort of give him not a pass on this, but let him grow and evolve. So, thank you for bringing that to us. I`m good - glad to hear that. Go ahead.
GERAGOS: Well, I was just going to say he does get - I mean he has that kind of magnet for attention and people kind of taking shots or target on his back, so to speak, that, you know, I will tell you, he is one of the most earnest young men that I have encountered. I have become incredibly close to him and to his mother Joyce, and the people around him, and I take a lot of pride in making sure that he is walking the straight and narrow as much as humanly possible for somebody in his position.
HAMMER: Oh, he is very lucky to have you speaking out on his behalf.
Now, of course when there are celebrities involved, Mark, there is going to be a three ring circus around many of these trials and you were at the center of perhaps the biggest one of them all, the iconic moment with Michael Jackson in his trial, and in your book you talk about this moment. We`re looking at it right here. There he is. Michael climbing on top of that SUV, this was after he left the courthouse, his videographer jumping up there with him to capture it all. What were you thinking when you saw this happening?
GERAGOS: Well, I will tell you, the first thing that ran through my mind is how in the world does a guy his age do that ...
(LAUGHTER)
GERAGOS: Just jump right up on the top of the SUV. Second of all, Ben Bronfman, who was my co-counsel there along with Pat, turned to me and said, if we don`t get this under control, this guy is going to show up in pajamas, so, which he ultimately did. So ...
HAMMER: Yeah.
GERAGOS: You know, it`s something, you know, the first real reaction as the lawyer is how is the judge going to react to this? This isn`t something that you want the judge to see and think that there is some kind of a dismissal or diminishing of the seriousness of the proceedings. So, that`s what went through my mind. I think, Michael had a, deservedly so, he had been falsely accused in that case and there was a lot, a lot of people taking shots at him and I think this was a way to kind of reward his fans and tell them I am not going to - you know, there is nothing to this basically.
HAMMER: Well, of course, right now, Mark, the circus of the moment is the Jodi Arias trial. Everybody is fascinated by this murder case. One juror has been dismissed for talking about the case and in your book you talk about stealth jurors in high profile cases. Tell me quickly what you mean by that.
GERAGOS: Well, stealth jurors is something that we coined back in the Peterson case, which is somebody who comes in there and you think that they`re the ideal juror because they kind of hit all the points. They know what to say. They`re wonderful. Then we discovered in one of these jurors` cases, in Peterson, that there was an Internet chat where - and somebody had forwarded it to my office where the woman had said literally I am going to lie my way onto this jury and get past this dumb -- and I won`t use the second word, defense lawyer, meaning me, and I am going to fry this guy, and, you know, that is something that can - gives you chills and makes you lose sleep. And that is a real problem, kind of in this area of or this era of kind of non-stop wall to wall super-sized trials.
HAMMER: Yeah, and another reason why what you think the outcome of a trial won`t necessarily be the outcome of the trial. I`ve got to leave it there, Mark. But it`s always great speaking to you. Thanks again.
GERAGOS: Thank you, A.J.
HAMMER: And the new book is "Mistrial, an Insider`s Look at How the Criminal Justice System Works." Get it now. And that takes us to the big reveal, number one, on our SHOWBIZ Countdown of secrets revealed. Zooey Deschanel, the star of the hit sitcom "New Girl," actually called a suspect in the Boston marathon terror attack on TV newscast. Yeah, I know. It sounds crazy. How the heck did it happen? We`ve got that surprising revelation in just a moment. Plus, that incredible Dove beauty ad, the one that shows how women are their own worst critics? It`s really been eye- opening for the more than 7 million people who have seen it. So, what if men had to critique their own looks?
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is the sketch that you helped me create. And that`s the sketch that somebody described of you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Would guys fall into the same trap? The answer is just stunning. But I am here to say in a totally different way. And our moment of SHOWBIZ Awesomeness, also a viral must-see. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: In Boston`s Copley Square crews are cleaning up the crime scene.
HAMMER: In a week of the shock, fear and sadness we saw the coverage of the Boston marathon bombings, there was at least one thing to smile about.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What did you do, Jess?
HAMMER: Zooey Deschanel, star of the Fox sitcom "New Girl" found herself caught up in the bombing story in an amusing way. A TV viewer in Texas tweeted this photo of a local newscast about the bombing, the closed captioning apparently misidentifies the famous hipster sweetheart as one of the bombing suspects
KEN BAKER, CHIEF NEWS CORRESPONDENT, E! NEWS: It has to be one of the biggest blunders that I can remember in a long time.
HAMMER: Zooey Deschanel took being named a terrorism suspect in stride. She tweeted, quote, whoa, epic closed captioning fail.
BAKER: She obviously understood that it was an error.
HAMMER: Fortunately, other celebrities have become part of the Boston marathon bombing story in more uplifting ways. Everyone is buzzing about this picture of Bradley Cooper along with New England Patriot Julian Edelman paying a hospital visit to a runner who lost both legs in the bombing.
BAKER: I thought it was just such a classy move, it`s just part of just this - entire outpouring of love that the city has felt.
HAMMER: Indeed, stars are finding creative new ways to reach out to Boston.
SANDRA BULLOCK: Pretty awesome.
HAMMER: Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy shot their upcoming new cop movie "The Heat: in and around Boston last summer. They told SHOWBIZ TONIGHT they want to hold a special advanced screening of their movie for the cops and FBI agents who`ve done so much for the city over the last few days.
MELISSA MCCARTHY: I think it is a great idea. I mean I think it is an amazing city that`s going through, obviously, a really tough situation. I have a sweet spot for it now.
BULLOCK: It has been an amazing tight-knit community before this happened and it just bonded the community even more.
ANNOUNCER: Mr. Neil Diamond!
HAMMER: Neil Diamond has such a sweet spot for Boston he took a red eye from L.A. to surprise fans at the first Red Sox game since the bombing.
NEIL DIAMOND (singing): Sweet Caroline!
HAMMER: He led the crowd in a sing along to his iconic song "Sweet Caroline," which serves as the team`s unofficial anthem and the city`s (inaudible) rallying cry.
Neil told SHOWBIZ TONIGHT "I was humbled and honored to be in Boston and to be able to personally thank and express my gratitude to the first responders and law enforcement officers.
BAKER: This tragedy has touched so many people, so, of course, it would also touch celebrities, particularly those who have connections to Boston.
AMY POEHLER: It`s been tough, isn`t it?
HAMMER: Massachusetts` native Amy Poehler posted an emotional video, where she discussed the Boston bombing and the effect of all those horrible images it has given us.
POEHLER: Everywhere we go there is just some picture that`s worse than the one before.
HAMMER: With criminal charges filed today in the case and the city finally returning back to normal, it looks like Boston is getting a break from the madness of last week. Yes, the pain and the loss remain fresh, but so does the sentiment expressed today by celebrities and non-celebrities alike.
POEHLER: I love you, Boston.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
HAMMER: It`s really been something to see. And more stars are stepping up for Boston. The band Fall Out Boy tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT they plan to donate proceeds from the Boston area concert to victims of the Boston bombing. I am sure we`ll be seeing a lot more of that.
As we move on, the Dove beauty ad that reveals with glaring honesty how women have a hard time seeing their own beauty has really struck a chord with women.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is the sketch that you helped me create. And that`s the sketch that somebody described of you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: But what if men were put to the same test? The results are stunning, but in a totally different way. You don`t want to miss this.
Plus, wait until you see what we have named as our moment of SHOWBIZ awesomeness, this is SBT, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT on HLN.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We couldn`t see them. They couldn`t see us.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Tell me about your hair.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I didn`t know what he was doing. But then I could tell after several questions that he was drawing me.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So, here we are. This is the sketch that you helped me create. And that`s the sketch that somebody described of you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes. That`s ...
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: That is the dramatic and powerful online Dove beauty ad that`s got everybody talking since it went viral. It really is a wake up call about rediscovering the real meaning of beauty. But, of course, it wouldn`t be a true online sensation, if somebody didn`t make a spoof of it, right? So, did you see this? Tonight if that dove ad made you smile, this spoof is going to make you crack up. And here is the deal. What if men were challenged to describe themselves like the women in those Dove ads? Well, the answer is downright ugly. Take a look at this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And we couldn`t figure out what was going on at first. After a few questions, I realized he was drawing us.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Tell me about your eyes.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A lot of people say they`re an abyss because they just don`t end.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And what about your teeth?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: My mom said I had the most beautiful teeth, and so I love to smile.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All I had been told before the sketch was to get friendly with this woman.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I guess this face looks like kind of dirty looking. Overall I would say he really looks like a lawn gnome. He looked like he smelled, really bad. And he did, actually. I don`t know, I guess his eyes just kind of like bugged out when he talked. I guess.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Wow.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is the sketch you helped me create. This is the sketch that someone else described of you.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yeah, he looks like a movie star and the other one looks like he will probably die soon.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I never realized that two opinions could be so vastly different. That is not me. And I refuse to believe it.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(LAUGHTER)
HAMMER: That is fantastic. And, you know, it is true for a lot of guys, right? Well, hang on for yet another viral ad that is going to be impossible for you to look away from. I`ve got the story behind this video of 10,000 iPhones falling like dominoes, and it is not what you think. This is SBT, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT on HLN.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
HAMMER: Time for SHOWBIZ Awesomeness, where we name the most awesome moment of the day and if you`re like me you`re obsessed with the number of amazing things that your iPhone 5 can do, right? Well, tonight we`re going to see together what else it can do. You`ve got to see 10,000 iPhones falling like dominoes to reveal an impressive online ad and when it is done I`ll explain the whole thing. Watch this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All right, go.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Go.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Here we go.
(CHEERS)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It`s working!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s working!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go, go, go.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go, go, go.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my goodness.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HAMMER: Wow, that is pretty amazing. But as you might have suspected, it is a fake. Yeah, except for the first one, the 9,999 other iPhones are computer generated. This was done by a software company. The tech gurus over redmondpie.com say that it would have cost them about 6.5 million bucks to buy all the iPhones, they would have needed to really pull off this awesome stunt, plus a lot of frustrating time just standing them all up.
Next on "DR. DREW ON CALL," why is the jury obsessed with Jodi Arias`s statement no jury will ever convict me? We`re going to check here with Dr. Drew to see what they make of this. "DR. DREW ON CALL" starts right now.
