Sentencing Hearing Underway for Greineder

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: We go now back live to that courtroom in Dedham, Massachusetts, were we just saw last hour Dr. Dirk Greineder convicted of murdering his wife. Now a sentencing hearing has begun and the jury is hearing from the -- his wife's sister and niece.

We'll listen in for a few moments.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: God bless you.

ALLEN: That was Mabel Greineder's sister speaking on her behalf. And we're going to listen in for a few moments and see who comes to the microphone next.

Again, this is now the sentencing hearing for the man you see right in the middle of your screen, that's Dr. Dirk Greineder of Dedham, Massachusetts, found guilty an hour ago of murdering his wife and now they have begun a sentencing hearing. He could get up to life in prison. There's no capital punishment in Massachusetts.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (OFF-MIKE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Mr. Murphy.

MARTIN MURPHY, GREINEDER'S ATTORNEY: (OFF-MIKE) Mr. Clerk, I would ask you if you would please impose the statutory sentence and advise the defendant to his right to have his case directly appealed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (OFF-MIKE) indictment 108588 in accordance with (OFF-MIKE) sentence to be imprisoned in a Massachusetts correction institution (OFF-MIKE) of your natural life and you stand committed as soon as this sentence. The court further (OFF-MIKE) assessment and you seek further (OFF-MIKE) in this matter in the (OFF- MIKE) required to give a DNA sample. (OFF-MIKE) to appeal to the superior court...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Supreme Judicial Court.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... Supreme Judicial Court of this commonwealth, and it's your attorney's obligation to affect and prosecute an appeal (OFF-MIKE) of this responsibility. You stand committed.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Thank you.

ALLEN: Dirk Greineder just removed from the courtroom in handcuffs. They're apparently continue on with the procedural matters in this case. Again, he could be sentenced up to life in prison. He was convicted one hour ago of first-degree murder in the murder of his wife. We'll continue to follow along in that story.
