JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: I'm Joie Chen in the CNN newsroom. There is a breaking news development on CNN today. We're getting information out of Seattle, Washington regarding an announcement from the Microsoft Corporation which is tied to all of its legal troubles. Now, Microsoft, you may know, has been engaged in a number of court battles over what has been ruled anticompetitive practices.

Competitors have been saying that Microsoft's Windows system and the way it is set up is so dominant that it keeps other players from getting a foothold. Such companies as Netscape Navigator said that they have had a tough time even getting a foothold because of Microsoft's dominance.

Now Microsoft says that PC makers can and will be allowed to remove Microsoft icons, some of them, in any case, and continue to add additional ones from other companies. This will be a change in its previous licensing deals. Continue to watch here on CNN. Expect in the coming hours there will be more on the significance of the decision from Microsoft in Seattle, Washington today.
