2001 Emmy Award Nominations Announced

LINDA STOUFFER, CNN ANCHOR: And now to Los Angeles. Announcements this morning of the nominees for the prime time Emmy awards.
CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: You do that very well, but we actually have Paul Vercammen standing by in Hollywood with more on that -- hi, Paul?
PAUL VERCAMMEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, if you guys want to come down here and take over right now...
LIN: Oh, we'd love to.
STOUFFER: We'd love to take over.
VERCAMMEN: You are welcome to get up at 1:00 A.M. and hang out here with all these people. Sean Hayes will be here and Patricia Heaton. We mention them because they are part of the big announcements this morning and they will probably, as always is the case, they're returning winners, be nominated.
And Sean Hayes, in fact, I understand, might be nominated in two categories, one for "Will & Grace" and the other as a host of "Saturday Night Live." Also, Christopher Walken might get nominated. He was the host of "Saturday Night Live" and he uttered the famous words now, "needs more cowbell," in a joke about "Don't Fear the Reaper," a song by -- it escapes my -- who did that? Blue Oyster Cult. Thank you so much.
Anyway, here's the procedures. They say we have a minute left. They will run through the major categories and again, we expect a lot of domination by "The Sopranos" and "The West Wing" in the drama category.
How about some newcomers? It always helps when a little flavor is injected into the Emmy nominations. People have a tendency here to repeat year after year after year. And here's some possible dark horses. How about someone like Lauren Graham from "The Gilmore Girls"? That show has generated a lot of buzz this year. There are others who say "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" should get its due. We'll just have to see about that. Maybe Frankie Muniz from "Malcolm in the Middle" will get his due today. Joe Pantoliano from "The Sopranos," a respected actor. Some people would like to see him get a supporting nomination. And maybe Chi McBride from the freshman show "Boston Public." You can hear them counting down so I'm going to be quiet.

MERYL MARSHALL-DANIELS, ATAS: Good morning. I'm Meryl Marshall- Daniels, chairman of the board of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. To present the nominees for the 53rd annual prime time Emmy awards, I'm pleased to introduce Emmy winners Patricia Heaton from "Everybody Loves Raymond" and Sean Hayes from "Will & Grace." Good morning.
SEAN HAYES, "Will & Grace": Good morning.
MARSHALL-DANIELS: Good morning, Patricia.
PATRICIA HEATON, "Everybody Loves Raymond": Good morning, Meryl.
HAYES: Thank you.
HEATON: Good morning, everybody.
HAYES: Patricia, ladies first.
HEATON: OK. I will start. The nominees for lead actor in a drama series are Andre Braugher, "Gideon's Crossing"; Dennis Franz, "NYPD Blue"; James Gandolfini, "The Sopranos"; Rob Lowe, "The West Wing"; Martin Sheen, "The West Wing."
HAYES: The nominations -- thank you. The nominations in the lead actress in a drama series category are Lorraine Bracco of "The Sopranos"; Amy Brenneman, "Judging Amy"; Edie Falco, "The Sopranos"; Marg Helgenberger, "C.S.I., Crime Scene Investigation"; Sela Ward, "Once and Again".
HEATON: The nominations in the drama series category are "ER", "Law and Order", "The Practice," "The Sopranos," "The West Wing."
HAYES: The nominees for lead actor in a miniseries or a movie are Kenneth Branagh, "Conspiracy"; Andy Garcia for "For Love or Country": The Arturo Sandoval Story"; Gregory Hines, "Bo Jangles"; Ben Kingsley, "Anne Frank"; and Barry Pepper, "61."
HEATON: The nominees for lead actress in the miniseries or a movie are Judy Davis, "Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows"; Dame Judi Dench, "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells"; Hannah Taylor Gordon, "Anne Frank"; Holly Hunter, "When Billie Beat Bobby"; Emma Thompson, "Wit."
HAYES: The nominees for the miniseries category are "Anne Frank," "Armistead Maupin's Further Tales of the City"; "Horatio Hornblower" -- I just like saying that name -- "Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows"; "Nuremberg."
HEATON: The made for television movie nominations are "Conspiracy," "For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story"; "Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor"; "61"; "Wit."
HAYES: The nominations in the comedy series category are...
HEATON: Nervous?
HAYES: Yes. "Everybody Loves Raymond"; "Frasier," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Sex in the City."
HEATON: Oh-oh. "Will & Grace." The nominees in the lead actor in a comedy series category are Kelsey Grammer, "Frasier"; John Lithgow, "Third Rock From the Sun"; Eric McCormack, "Will & Grace"; Frankie Muniz, "Malcolm in the Middle"; Ray Romano, "Everybody Loves Raymond."
HAYES: Patricia, why don't we bring back Meryl to announce one final category?
HEATON: OK.
MARSHALL-DANIELS: Here we go. The lead actress in a comedy series nominees are Calista Flockhart, "Ally McBeal"; Jane Kaczmarek, "Malcolm in the Middle"; Deborah Messing, "Will & Grace"; Sarah Jessica Parker, "Sex and the City"; and Patricia Heaton, "Everybody Loves Raymond". And, Sean, I've got good news for you, too. You've been nominated for best supporting actor.
HAYES: Thank you. Thanks.
MARSHALL-DANIELS: That concludes our nomination ceremonies. Let me extend our congratulations to all the nominees and we'll see you all at the Emmys on September 16 on CBS.
VERCAMMEN: Well, as you saw, Patricia Heaton and Sean Hayes, as predicted, received their nominations, as well, and they are defending Emmy champions. Among the surprises this morning, Mark Helgenberger from "C.S.I." That's the freshman show on CBS that delves deep into the files, if you will, of forensic biologists and those people who solve those crimes. Some people have criticized the Emmys in the past, saying that they can be slow on the take and don't always recognize a show when it breaks out in its first year. Well, they did nod to "C.S.I."
There also, Andre Braugher nominated in the drama category. I don't think many people predicted that he would get his due.
Let's look at the major categories then. So, for the outstanding drama series, it was the usual suspects. It was "ER" It was "Law and Order". It was "The Practice", "The Sopranos" and "The West Wing". And then for the comedies it was "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Will & Grace," "Frasier", "Sex and the City" and "Malcolm in the Middle". So, a pretty predictable bit of Emmy nominations this morning. No major stunners. But we did have a few in there that, well, people will be speculating about and thinking about. And by the way, the big festival of fun is in September and it will be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

LIN: All right, thanks, Paul. You've got a really fast pen there. I know you're going to try to chase after the presenters, who were also nominated as well, so we'll give you a break here. Thanks so much. We hope to see you in a bit.
