Moxley Family Holds News Conference on Michael Skakel's Trial

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We want to take you live now to Stanford, Connecticut. This is Martha Moxley, this is actually her mother speaking right now in the wake of today's hearings. Let's listen in.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

QUESTION: ... the judge keeps in mind as he works his way towards a decision on the road (UNINTELLIGIBLE) what do you want the judge to think about or keep in mind?

DORTHY MOXLEY, MOTHER: Oh, I just want him to be honest and just to do what's right is what I want him to do. Look it, I'm all -- thank you.

QUESTION: Mrs. Moxley, what is your reaction to Greg Coleman's death?

MOXLEY: Oh, Greg Coleman's death, you know, I thought, I think that these young people from, who were residents of Elan, when they have, when they come forward, I think, you know, I really admire them so much for doing it. I'm sure they're not proud of what they did as kids. I'm sure that they would rather not have to come forward but they're doing it because they know it's the right thing to do. It shows that they've grown up and they've matured and they know when it's the right thing to do to come forward and I mean I'M just very proud of them and I think that Greg's death was -- it was very unfortunate. I really feel bad about it.

QUESTION: Are you thinking about...

(CROSSTALK)

QUESTION: Are you worried about what his death is going to (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?

MOXLEY: No. His death, I think, you know, I'm sure that it helped the case, but I don't think it's going to have any affect now.

JOHN MOXLEY, BROTHER: Let me say one thing.

QUESTION: Yes? JOHN MOXLEY: Let me just say one thing. I think the most offensive thing today is that after 26 years, Michael Skakel's attorneys are calling this a garden variety murder and that they're still looking for legal loopholes and that instead of standing up and saying all right, I said this here or there or somebody said this, I didn't say that, you know, all of a sudden -- I think it just shows his contempt that all of a sudden we're garden variety and we're looking for a loophole. And I think that that speaks volumes about, you know, their whole approach to everything. Thanks.

QUESTION: Mr. Moxley, what was it like hearing him argue to have the whole thing thrown out?

JOHN MOXLEY: Yes, we'll cross that bridge -- I don't think that it'll happen. Jonathan Benedict seems to think that the case law is on his side. We'll cross that bridge when it happens. I thought one of the most telling things is when Mickey Sherman, after everything was said and done said to the judge well, I've got one last question. After you rule, what court do we show up to have the trial? I don't think, I thought that spoke volumes about what Mickey Sherman's thoughts were on the proceeding.

But we're confident that, you know, we're going to go to the next level.

QUESTION: What did Mickey Sherman say to you before the trial?

JOHN MOXLEY: Well, that's it.

(CROSSTALK)

QUESTION: Skakel looked back several times in the direction of your (UNINTELLIGIBLE). Did you assess that and do you have any idea what the heck it was? Did it bother you?

JOHN MOXLEY: It didn't bother us. He knows we're coming, you know? He's looking over his back. I mean look at him, you know? He's gained weight. His hair is gray. He's looking over his shoulder to see who's following him and we're always going to be there.

QUESTION: You didn't think it was, it seemed kind of smug and challenging (UNINTELLIGIBLE)? You perceived it as a more, more (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?

JOHN MOXLEY: He's looking over his shoulder to see who's following him. It's as simple as that. Thanks.

KAGAN: We've been listening to comments from John Moxley and Dorthy Moxley, the brother and mother of Martha Moxley. She was the murder victim back in 1975, in October of 1975. Michael Skakel, the Kennedy cousin, now stands accused of that crime. His lawyers today in court trying to get the case dismissed yet again. We'll have to wait and hear on that ruling and the drama goes on again for the Moxley family, as John Moxley pointed out, 26 years later.
