Oscar Nominations Announced

PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) away now from the announcement of this year's Academy Award nominations. In Los Angeles are Charles Feldman is on the ground there. He joins us now as we're just about 40 seconds away.
Why don't you go through some of the favorites this morning -- good morning.
CHARLES FELDMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Very quickly, Paula, good morning.
Everyone's looking at the contest between "A Beautiful Mind," which is a studio film by Universal, and "In the Bedroom," an independent film distributed by Miramax. People are looking whether or not Ron Howard will get nominated for the very first time in the best director category, whether or not Russell Crowe, who won last year as best actor, will get renominated for "In the Bedroom" this year and whether Nicole Kidman gets a nomination for best actress. Two possibilities there, "Moulin Rouge" and "The Others."
And we're just about ready, Paula.
ZAHN: All right, thanks, Charles.
We're going to turn our attention now to Marcia Gay Harden, last year's Oscar winner for best supporting actress. Let's listen to her reel off the nominees.
FRANK PIERSON, PRESIDENT, ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS & SCIENCES: Good morning, I'm Frank Pierson the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Before we reveal the nominees for the 74th Academy Awards, I'd like to introduce my co-announcer this morning. Please welcome last year's best supporting actress, the talented, Marcia Gay Harden.
MARCIA GAY HARDEN, ACTRESS: Thank you, Frank.
PIERSON: You're welcome.
HARDEN: Thank you. Good morning, everyone.
PIERSON: The 2001 nominees for best performance by an actress in a supporting role are: Jennifer Connelly in "A Beautiful Mind," Helen Mirren in "Gosford Park," Maggie Smith in "Gosford Park," Marisa Tomei in "In the Bedroom" and Kate Winslet in "Iris" -- Marcia.
HARDEN: Thank you.
For best performance by an actor in a supporting role, the nominees are: Jim Broadbent in "Iris," Ethan Hawke in "Training Day," Ben Kingsley in "Sexy Beast," Ian McKellen in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," and John Voight in "Ali."
PIERSON: For best performance by an actress in a leading role, the nominees are: Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball," Judi Dench in "Iris," Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge" and Sissy Spacek in "In the Bedroom," and Renee Zellweger in "Bridget Jones's Diary."
HARDEN: The nominees for best performance by an actor in a leading role are: Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind," Sean Penn in "I am Sam," Will Smith in "Ali," Denzel Washington in "Training Day" and Tom Wilkinson in "In the Bedroom."
PIERSON: In the category best achievement in directing: Ron Howard for "A Beautiful Mind," Ridley Scott for "Black Hawk Down," Robert Altman for "Gosford Park" and Peter Jackson for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and David Lynch for "Mulholland Drive."
HARDEN: For best screen play written directly for the screen, the nominees are: "Amelie" Guillaume Laurant and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, "Gosford Park" Julian Fellows, "Memento" Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, "Monster's Ball" Milo Addica and Will Rokos and "The Royal Tenenbaums" Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson.
PIERSON: Screen play based on material previously produced or published: "A Beautiful Mind" Akiva Goldsman, "Ghost World" Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff, "In the Bedroom" Bob Fetsinger and Todd Field, "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson, and "Shrek" Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman and Roger S.H. Schulman.
HARDEN: For best foreign language film we have "Amelie" France, "Elling" Norway, "LaGaan" India, "No Man's Land" Bosnia and Herzegovina and "Son of the Bride" Argentina.
PIERSON: In our new category for best animated feature film the nominees are: "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius," "Monsters, Inc." and "Shrek."
HARDEN: And finally, I am pleased to announce that the films selected as the best picture nominees for 2001 are: "A Beautiful Mind," Brian Gracer (ph) and Ron Howard producers, "Gosford Park" Robert Altman, Bob Balaban and David Levy (ph) producers, "In the Bedroom" Graham Leader (ph), Ross Katz (ph) and Todd Field producers, "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" nominees to be determined, and "Moulin Rouge" Martin Brown (ph), Baz Luhrmann and Fred Barren (ph) producers.
