CNN Live Event/Special
Nation's Capital on Highest Alert
Aired September 11, 2002 - 07:14 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
AARON BROWN, CNN ANCHOR: The news of the day seems to be a continuing tension and a continuing growing of the state of alert.
Judy Woodruff is in Washington doing some reporting on that for us.
So, Judy -- good morning to you again.
JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: Good morning again, Aaron.
That's right. This city is waking up. It's a little after 7:00 in the East, flags flying at half-staff. You can see the flag near the United States Capitol behind me.
Most people who work for the federal government will be at work today. They have been given lose instructions that if they choose to stay away, that is understandable. But most of them, we expect, will be at their desk and at their posts.
Security is higher today, because of this orange alert status that we are now -- we now find ourselves in, as a result of the new intelligence that David Ensor was reporting on just a few moments ago.
But, you know, this is a city that has been moving in this direction. It's a city that has been moving toward greater security in years -- in the past few years.
So, what we have today is simply ramped up a little bit, but not something people in Washington are completely unfamiliar with.
We are all bracing at the same time, though, for a day of looking back -- Aaron, Paula.
BROWN: Judy, thank you. Judy Woodruff in Washington, part of a team of CNN anchors and correspondents, who will be spending all of this day reporting the events of this extraordinary day.
