PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: We go back to the ceremony now. It's just interesting to note that it has been going on now for about two hours and 25 minutes, the individual reading of the names.

(APPLAUSE) AARON BROWN, CNN ANCHOR: That long and difficult reading of every victim at the Trade Center. We try -- we have tried, through the course of the year, to give you a sense of the magnitude of this.

The weeks ago, the last week in August, they were still finding human remains on buildings in the area of the Trade Center. Funerals literally continue in New York.

BROWN: The mayor of New York will introduce the governor of New Jersey. The Port Authority, this land that we are talking about is jointly controlled by both the states of New York and New Jersey, and that's why the governor of New Jersey will make some remarks. He'll read from the Declaration of Independence.

But first, Mayor Bloomberg.

MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, NEW YORK: ... on which we build our lives. Governor James E. McGreevey.

GOV. JAMES E. MCGREEVEY, NEW JERSEY: We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

(APPLAUSE)

ZAHN: A lot of the family members who attended the services in downtown New York really didn't know what to expect, and I hope to hear later today that they felt that the integrity of the ceremonies and the dignity of the ceremonies help them as they go through yet another tough day, of successions of very, very painful days since last September 11.

BROWN: It is, at least for me, it's hard to imagine that it could have been done any better, any more carefully, any more thoughtfully. There was no speech-making. People came and did the appropriate business this week. As we look at the gathering, there's an honor guard there that's about to be dismissed in about three hours now -- not quite three hours -- excuse me -- after the ceremony began, it ends, and people will start making their way out of the ground zero area and back to their lives.
