America Votes 2002: A Look at Some Early Results

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We continue to look at America Votes 2002. It's all over but the shouting and the head scratching at this particular time, right?
DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: There will be some shouting.
HARRIS: Yes, there will be. And lots of that going on probably in the next hour or so as folks start to wake up and read the papers and listen to the news this morning.
Let's take a look at some of the other results that we've got coming in from last night. Looking now at the governor's races here. In Georgia, again, one of the big surprises of the evening. Haven't talked to one person yet who did not say this was the biggest surprise for them.
CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Didn't Sonny Perdue say he was surprised he won?
HARRIS: He may have been very surprised himself that he won because he was well behind in the polls, at least by double digits, and Roy Barnes had had a multi, multi-million dollar advantage...
KAGAN: Talk about cash.
HARRIS: ... in the -- in the war chest department and it didn't help. It didn't -- well it may have helped, but it didn't help enough, because Sonny Perdue makes the pick up there for Republicans and we now have a Republican governor in Georgia (ph).
COSTELLO: Oh, he looks like one happy man. Yes.
Hey, let's move on to the Florida governor's race. Governor Jeb Bush, a Republican, yes, he will serve a second term. He wins over Bill McBride by a decisive margin. So Jeb Bush has made his brother proud this morning.
KAGAN: Yes, and his parents as well. They were by his side.
Checking out California governor, Gray Davis hanging on and he goes on to get his second term in office as governor of California beating Bill Simon.
As well as -- excuse me, we're going to look at some propositions, not just people. This was the medical use of marijuana in Arizona. Goes down to a resounding no vote. So you will not be allowed to do that in Arizona where it has passed in some other states before this.
And in Florida, this Amendment 6, it would go -- it would go to the state Constitution about banning smoking basically -- very restrictive, banning smoking indoors. Looks like Floridians are ready to be that restrictive with their smokers.
HARRIS: Some of the most restrictive rules there.
KAGAN: Yes.
HARRIS: In fact, I think only California and New York may be -- may have the similar restrictions, but those just some of the results.
KAGAN: OK.
