KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Now we're going to take you live -- we told you Nancy Pelosi would be taking to the helm. Of course, a historic position. First woman elected as the Democratic minority leader. Let's listen in to her first dugout meeting with reporters.
(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

REP. NANCY PELOSI (D-CA), MINORITY LEADER: On the domestic side, we've been focused on the economy. We will be working on the ongoing on a plan for economic growth for our country.

As many of you know, right after the election we planned a forum on economic issues that was held the 9th and 10th of December. Following up on that, ranking members of the appropriate committees and members of the leadership have come to Washington, before Christmas and since, to work on this plan. We'll have some announcements on it, I think, by Monday afternoon. We'll keep you posted on that.

This will be an economic stimulus package. I won't go into the particulars now, except to say that it will be fair, it will be fiscally sound, it will create jobs -- say that over and over again: It will create jobs -- and it will grow the economy.

On the international side, we will be having -- let me finish on the economic side. We'll be continuing our economic meetings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. We will continue them.

On Thursday, I've asked Ike Skelton, who is the ranking member on the Armed Services Committee, to put together a national security forum to begin in the new Congress a discussion, which is a continuation of our ongoing discussion about national security. And we'll be dealing with some of the issues of the day at that time. To be current -- not to be briefed, but to be very current on those issues.

So one of the issues of course that is looming large in the news now is the issue of Korea -- of North Korea. And it's a huge challenge. One of the principles of our foreign policy is to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

PHILLIPS: The first woman ever to lead either party of Congress. You are listening to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi with her first dugout meeting, addressing reporters there, talking about the economy, as President Bush gets ready to unveil his economic stimulus package.
